Beautiful music reflecting a wonderful heritage and history.

I once had a large LP vinyl collection, long since given away. I did not replace most of the music as it had not migrated to CD. It's a blessing that much of it is still available on RU-vid.

It's great to hear how well these recordings by David Monroe and the EMC have held up, how fresh they sound even after forty years. Today's performers have greater virtuosity and their instruments are better, but Monroe had the spirit of the music down pat--and in the end, that's all that counts.

This was recorded a good forty years ago--and I bought the record back then! It's delightful to find how well these performances hold up today. David Munrow had the thing that can't be taught nor bought nor dug up in a library: a sure instinct for the spirit of the music.

Myself also - 40 years ago in a record shop in Seattle run by a crabby lady! I thought she was wonderful. We all took those days for granted, thought that huge piles of vinyl would be "forever." Sigh...

Absoutely! Of course Munrow is the pioneer and we owe so much to him, but as I listened to this, it struck me that the performance here is a bit perfunctory. Baltimore Consort (especially tunes from the attic) has an excitement to it that is more than just the notes. Les Witches plays excellent broken consort type music too.

Although the performers on these pieces at one time or another played with the Early Music Consort of London, these pieces are being played by The Morley Consort. This was the "B" side to the EMC's Two Renaissance Dance Bands.

You got that right, belpberg! I am ashamed at the grunting, ape-like noises that pass for "music". Cultures in the future are going to wonder what was happening to us now! Let's hope and pray that improvements are soon to come.

captebbtide thank you captebbtide - I think there are still some humans who don't want to hear noise, but music - but I also realise how difficult it has become to educate children in music. Sad but true.

The first music is not from Thomas Morley. It was popular tune arranged by Daniel Bachelar or William Byrd. And its title is "Monsieur Almaine."
