Welcome to the ultimate backyard Thai food forest in Chiang Rai, Thailand!
🥬 $1.52 Thai Buffet: • $1.52 Thai Plant Based...
CHIANG RAI, THAILAND - Today we’re visiting Suan Ban Kan Kin Garden สวนปั๋นกั๋นกิ๋น, one of the ultimate backyard organic food farms in Chiang Rai. I could not believe the diversity of ingredients growing in the backyard in a relatively small area. We’re going to walk around and see the full farm, then we’ll cook some amazing dishes with ingredients we pick fresh.
Gurmar leaves - One of the key ingredients I love in northern Thailand is gurmar leaves, which are delicious and extremely healthy.
Chaya - Another vegetable that Aunty had growing abundantly in the back was chaya, also known as Mexican kale or tree spinach, and in Thai they sometimes call it MSG leaves because they are so tasty on their own and have umami.
Hairy-fruited eggplant - Finally to complete this Thai food farm to table experience, we made an extremely spicy chili dip with hairy fruited eggplant that has a taste somewhere between a tomato and gooseberry with a bit of bitterness. It goes so well together with chilies and garlic to create a powerful plant based chili dip for fresh vegetables.

I have a lot growing in my garden in Hawai'i on Big Island! But this has inspired me to do more, put on my boots, strap my baby to my back (while gardening more than I do now! I love seeing the coconut and banana. You did it like a pro, Mark! Just duck! I know not everything can grow but this made me want to try and experiment more! Aloha and mahalo for your joy and excitement Every single time every single moment!

Just imagine how healthy these people are. Eat all those greens everyday, fresh, with all their vitamins and minerals and you would never get sick. I wish I had a green thumb! I've always wanted to garden like my Dad, but I just don't have the ability to make anything grow. All of it looks amazing.

Hi Mark and Ying. 🙏😊. Loved this video. Nothing like homegrown greens and veg. I cultivate wild edibles in my yard as well as herbs and vegetables. Have 20 large chilli and peppadew bushes if not more. They've taken over half my garden one of my favourite breakfasts is just walking around my garden collecting wild and regular greens and having it with just garlic, chilli, lemon and a touch of oil to sauté. Best thing ever. Think I'll have amaranth greens, lambs Quarters and common mallow this morning. Would absolutely love some of those Thai veggies but doubt they would grow well in South Africa. Have a super day and be blessed 🙏

Cool! I remember making a comment on your video asking you to make another one identifying all the plants. Good job! Here's a list of the species names of (most of) the plants you ate: Gurmar is Gymnema sylvestre Chaya is the correct name for "Mexican Kale" or "MSG leaf" which is Cnidoscolus aconitifolius Winged beans are Psophocarpus tetragonolobus Hairy fruited eggplant is Solanum lasiocarpum and Pea eggplants are Solanum torvum and neither are eggplant which is Solanum melongena The choi with the flowers is one of the many brassicas that looks like that, there are hundreds. In case anyone wants to order seeds or something now you know what to Google!

@adriennefloreen
@adriennefloreen 2 года назад
Thanks, please tell everyone if they order seeds from another country to write those scientific names on the outside of the package. I once ordered seeds for Parkia speciosa which is stink beans, of course the person wrote stink beans on the package. It was opened by US customs who then wrote Parkia speciosa all over it and taped it shut with many layers of tape. You have to write the species for all plants but in the case of my stink beans I wonder if they opened it with gloves and a mask to see what it was. By the way if you Google stink beans it brings up a picture of you holding them as the official image.

@adriennefloreen
@adriennefloreen 2 года назад
Mark. I want to thank you. After I identified these plants I decided to order some of them, because I noticed a few of your subscribers asked where to find them and noticed that a few were pretty rare only sold by a few people on the internet. So I ordered some of them and one of the people sent me seeds to another plant for free, it was seeds for solanum pimpinellifolium which is apparently a wild ancestor of tomatoes, tomatillos, and Peruvian ground cherries that some people including the Etsy seller in Florida think is native to the Florida everglades but scientists think originated in Peru. I didn't ask for these seeds, she just randomly sent them to me as a free sample with a hand written letter saying what they were. I am amazed, I collect plants in the solanaceae family so this random seed present is like exactly what my best friend would buy me if she knew, but she didn't know, because the person that did this sent me one one of the plants I Identified on this list that's name doesn't start with Solanum, and had no idea I had typed this list. I look forward to growing this plant and eating it's berry, which I wouldn't have known existed if I didn't order a plant you ate in a video.
@adriennefloreen
@adriennefloreen 2 года назад
Hi again Mark, I just wanted to let you know that Gymnema sylvestre is apparently a really controversial plant because it has some kind of chemical in it that makes sweet food not taste as good to your brain and can lower some people's blood sugar too much, there are scientific articles debating whether a few bites of it will help diabetics or be dangerous to them, I was absolutely astonished what kind of stuff came up when I researched this plant... there are even scientific studies of compounds it contains on the NIH's website. I've had issues with stevia causing me to have a blood sugar crash (I am pre-diabetic) and here you are eating plates of the stuff with a hundred times more stevia than I could eat with another plant that could cause that without any negative side effects not even starting to sweat like you do when you eat certain foods. That's just so interesting that I have to try it myself, I ordered seeds for this Gymnema sylvestre plant and they came with a warning label saying they were not for human consumption and only for growing as an ornamental (I guess they read the same stuff I did...) and my boyfriend bought some Stevia seeds at a gardening store in California. Sometime in a few months I will make whatever they cooked for you, and take a bite and see if it tastes good or severely affects my blood sugar.
