The Rocket Festival ประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ Bun Bang Fai is a merit-making ceremony traditionally practiced by ethnic Lao people at the beginning of the wet season in various villages and municipalities in Northeastern Thailand and Laos.
The festivities typically include music and dance performances, competitive processions of floats, dancers and musicians on the second day, and culminating on the third day with the competitive firing of homemade rockets.
Local participants and sponsors take advantage of the occasion to enhance their social prestige, as is customary in traditional Buddhist folk festivals throughout Southeast Asia.
The festival in Thailand also includes special programs and specific local patterns like Bang Fai (Parade dance) and a Beautiful Bang Fai float such as Yasothon on the third weekend of May, and continues Suwannaphum District, Roi Et on the first weekend of June, Phanom Phrai District Roi Et during the full moon of the seventh month in Lunar year's calendar each year.
Related to the Chinese Fire Arrow, Bang Fai are made from bamboo bongs. Most contemporary ones, however, are enclosed in PVC piping, making them less dangerous by standardizing their sizes and black-powder charges (which contest rules require be compounded by the rocketeers, themselves).
Bang Fai come in various sizes, competing in several categories. Small ones are called Bang Fai Noi. Bang Fai Lan are nine metres long and charged with 120 kg of black powder. These may reach altitudes of several kilometers, and travel dozens of kilometers down range (they can go in any direction, including right through the crowd).
Competing rockets are scored for apparent height, distance, and beauty of the vapour trail.
This is a great part of the regions culture and it’s worth seeing if you get a chance.

This festival was amazing. I have been wanting to do it for years. Another great part of Thai culture takes place when the rivers are at their highest. Here is a video of the dragon boat races if you want to see more. Traditional Long Boat Racing in Ayutthaya Thailand - Aug 6-7 2022 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PiGzuxPrLkI.html

Very cool! What is the name of the channel you saw me on? I would like to see the video. I liked the area and I hope to go back again next year. I want to see the parade and the dancing. I had to work on Thursday and Friday so I missed it this year. I hope you enjoyed the video and appreciate you taking your time on my channel.

Wow you survived. This was the most engaging video I’ve seen of the festival 👍🏻. I actually put it on my bucket list, but I will not tell partner all the story. She won’t allow me to blow up 😂. Thai safety all the way, take a cigarette 🚬

I had it on my list from years ago. Gunpowder, booze and Buddhism all rolled into one. :) you saw the guys wearing the bicycle helmets, they put safety up there as the #1 priority. lol I left covered in soot. I expected the rockets to be powerful but it really surprised me seeing them up close and personal.

Ya the amount of smoke and debris got in the way. Lol I felt like I was at the battle of Gettysburg doing Pickets charge.

I think this is actually the Thai military testing grounds. Zelensky is going to be giving these guys a call.

They are using Soviet rocket technology from WW2. Z will call them for money I’m sure.

The rain shall fall upon the rice fields. I’ve seen villagers in Ubon compounding their own powder and making rockets from bamboo. They used an old motorcycle battery as an ignition source. Never seen anything close to the spectacle you are at. Amazing festival. Maybe we’ll go one time. I think once is an acceptable risk. 😂

I was wondering where the lowest risk place would be. The rockets seem to fall wherever they may after they are done. Is it right next to 150 pounds of gunpowder when it goes off or below a spent 100 kg fuselage of a rocket? lol I think it’s worth the risk to go and see it. Probably best to not be right below the rocket like I was though. :) back home we would’ve done this but no one ever had the idea. I would’ve loved to have been able to mix up some gunpowder and blast the clouds.

I found the rocket festival by just following the rockets on the horizon. You could see them from about 5 miles away going up. I think I had the best seat in the house. I felt like I was part of the civil war battle of Gettysburg from all of the smoke.

Dude that's totally looks like a great time. Going to have to put it on my list. Thanks for sharing

@@Going2see it’s in May all around Issan. They also do it in November in Nong Kai. It’s tough to find information about the dates in English. They go off the lunar calendar so they are different days each year. If you get a chance to go you will have a great time. I waited a decade and a half to see it and it was worth the wait.

They do it at several other places and at different times. It was hard getting information on it in English. I had my wife search it out in Thai and she got me close to where it was at. I got close enough to just follow the rockets. If your friend goes the one in Nong Khai or Kalisan would be the best, there seems to be more information on when and where they are at. I hope he gets a chance to go as I had a great time. I’ve been and it’s still on my list of things to do for next year. :)
