I flew Thai Smile recently (may ‘23) after a 13 hour flight from London (Thai international) with 5 hours waiting for my connecting Thai Smile at the terminal, close to 24 hours travelling. Being a bit long in the tooth nowadays I was having trouble weighing my luggage with the self check in. One of the staff, and there were plenty standing around watching said to me in Thai (not realising g my wife speaks fluent Thai , having been born there) told me “if you don’t like it, fly with someone else”. Luckily for her I was told this once we’d gone through security and everything waiting to board the flight. Needless to say I’m going to take her up on her advice

In 2017, I flew from Sai Gon to Manila with Thai Airways with an overnight layover in Bangkok. It sounds crazy, as I could have done with a direct flight at a significantly cheaper cost with Cebu Pacific. However, I didn't regret at all; it was worth every penny. Both legs were on B777 with 3-3-3 seat config in economy cabin. The service was fantastic. I wish Thai Airways the best; they need to bring back widebodies for Vietnamese routes.

Good choice and for my father he has flown BKK MNL many times and got Star Alliance Gold status with them his last use was in 2009 AC ABE-YYZ before it got cut.

Vietnam Airlines also stop serving the hot meals in all Thailand routes. Now they only serve cold sandwich. But for Thai smile , they serve the hot meals ( called Smile Light meal ) in Vietnamese routes from July .

Sad Thai Smile is going , I have to say compared to UK, low cost carriers they were outstanding on service and light meals. I already see less flights to siem reap with Thai Airways:(

Nice video and I am wondering if you have a Star Alliance milage membership or not? Since it's going to work on Thai Smile just like how a Thai Smile Royal orchid member gets to use theirs on UA & AC flights North America Europe LH OU LX LO OS TK Brussels Airlines TP Aegan and SK Latin America Avianca Asia Pacific OZ TG CA NH NZ Shenzhen Airlines African continent MS ET and SA. Thai airways needs to return to NYC this time to EWR for UA feed just like LH TP LO OS LX

Yes, I have status on SQ and OZ. Thai Smile however is a separate airline from TG and only a Star Alliance connecting member, so the benefits of Star Alliance Gold are negligible when flying Thai Smile. Perhaps if you have status with TG you’ll have benefits with WE, but if so, it’s because of the TG relationship, not because of Star Alliance. Separate note, I HIGHLY doubt TG will ever serve any US destinations ever again. They were massive loss making routes and simply vanity projects. A smarter TG leadership wouldn’t make the same mistakes again.

In my family only my father has the TG Royal Orchid membership which means he can get milage on Thai Smile then use it on TG🇹🇭 first then OZ🇰🇷 BR🇹🇼 NH🇯🇵 AC🇨🇦 LH🇩🇪 and UA 🇺🇲. TG BKK-LAX/EWR might work with A350-900s although weight restricted which would require TG to go A350-1000ulr or A350-900ulr which partner SQ owns.

ULRs are no longer necessary. SQ’s ULRs had a special (increased) MTW of 280 tonnes (compared to 260t-268t originally) and has increased fuel capacity but within the standard sized tanks. Now, years later, the standard MTW for A359s is 280 tonnes… so technically, all A359s are now “ULRs”.

So, back to Bali, huh? Is it the Alila Seminyak? I do have a question for you regarding the name of your base in Southeast Asia. You keep referring to the city as "Saigon" rather than "Ho Chi Minh". Is that a thing the locals do? Kind of like Mumbai/Bombay? One last thing -- talking about Alila, any plans to feature the Alila Bangsar in K.L. in your channel? Or have you done that before? Correct with the Alila. As for Saigon, yes the vast majority of those living in Saigon (and Southern Vietnam in general) refer to the city as Sài Gòn in conversational English or Vietnamese. Usually only when speaking with a foreign tourist will most say ‘Ho Chi Minh City’… Those who have migrated from northern provinces may more commonly refer to it as HCMC.

Its just sad to see thai smile get the same fate as counterparts silkair and dragon did (tho one is not like the other as dragon never was and never felt like an inferior "lower cost" option to mainline unlike what smile and silkair werr). But whats even sadder is how an sq cx or ty flight no longer guarantees you a widebody ride.

TG is the only real real downgrade for narrowbody though since they don't have a proper business class. SQ and CX I'm happy to fly narrow.

The name of the city is Ho Chi Minh City. Calling it Saigon may trigger some Vietnamese.

I’ve lived there for nearly 10 years. ‘Saigon’ (Sài Gòn) is the name colloquially used by the vast majority of residents. Sometimes when speaking with a tourist in English they will use ‘Ho Chi Minh City’… I have like 50 Vietnam videos on the channel and seems you were the first to be triggered 😉

Thailand isn't exactly "recovering from Covid" but rather the economy is recovering from lockdowns. Covid in Thailand is raging, perhaps stronger than ever, and ICUs are filling up. The only difference is that the media has turned from hyping Covid to covering up the severity of the situation to push the prevailing narrative.
