My grandmother was born in 1923 in Thonburi province, she withnessed the construction of King Bhudayodfah bridge, World War II and Japanese occupation. In 1953, the year that this documentary was made, she was working at Kasikorn Bank, Sua Pha headoffice, she was the phone operator for Mr. Bancha Lumsum's office. From her dedication and hard work at Kaskikorn Bank, she was able to send my father and his siblings to the United States for higher education---a rare thing for upper middle class Thais at that time. She had also acquired many plots of land from the bank at cheap prices and pass them on to us. She vividly mentioned the years under Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat administration which saw fierce implementation of martial laws. My grandmother is currently 98 years old, and have lived through 5 reigns of Kings. Although she's on a wheelchair now, I still like to visit her frequently and listen to all the old stories she have to tell.
Hey! Im a Thai myself, and my grandma was born in 1931 right before the revolution in 1932. She was a goldsmith and a factory lady for a while, but later started a company with my grandad to build gasification and drier machines for rice mills. Do you use discord? Or LINE? Lets keep in touch! I think we share similar interests and it would be interesting to meet you. I live in Nonthaburi.
Thailand is like my second home. Been visiting the last 22 years. Will be there next week again! Love the country, people, culture and food, but hate the corruptions of their politicians! From Singapore.
Wire haired Dachshund fuck you ! Democracy is not the only means to a better government. The issue in Thailand is of unfederated corruption and has nothing to do with the system of democracy. I will not respond in kind with unkind words and accusation. Now fuck off!
Lovely I'm 15 and always wanted to understand about history of our country, this video gave me insight on how lovely it was back then as well as how far we have developed.
Sawasdee I lived 10 years in Thailand. I must say I cried a little when I saw the king and queen in this video. It feels so long ago, yet so recent and relatable, too.
Bear in your mind young people. Any kind of camera either film or still were not easily acquired by ordinary people as in nowaday Thailand. We're poor undeveloped country. The most important thing is this film was professionally done not by amateur, therefore it's made for commercial purpose, may be by a government agency of either American or Thai to promote the country to the western.
Wow, as a Thai, I could only imagin what Bangkok was like back in the day. Nice to see it in motion picture! Wish I could turn back time and take a stroll around the grand palace during those times. Amazing.
Thailand is fantastic. Beautiful nature, valuable culture, so many amazing temples. People are really friendly and helpful :) I have been in your country for the first time one year ago and i am coming back in next year
Indeed. However, back in 1953, these terms could have been used to describe Thailand as the differences between America and Thailand were enormous back then. Now, these terms aren't so relevant anymore.
Reminds me how Bali is always painted as "paradise" by tourists when historically it was a godforsaken backwater that the colonial Dutch hated being posted to.
I have lived in Thailand over twenty years. I was born in 1952 (U.S.A.). I came to Thailand in 1996. Thailand is a world of wonderful people. Thailand is wonderful. Amazing.

My dad is borned in thailand around 1959. My dad said there were still the floating markets in that time. It has changed a lot from now. Sorry for my bad grammar.
Great film! 🎥✌️ I visited Thailand in 2015 for the first time, I was fascinated! Thank you, Thai people, for the opportunity to travel safely and enjoy my time here in Thailand. You are awesome! 🙏 Btw, if anyone is around Phuket, let's connect 😎
Je ne comprends pas l'anglais donc je me suis contenté de regarder et je trouve que ce merveilleux pays et toujours aussi envoûtant, je suis tombé amoureux de ce pays et de ses habitants, merci pour cette vidéo.
Same, as a thai person. I really want to live there. My dad has borned in 1959 and I would love to born in that time. But there is no where back sadly...
Nice movie ^^ It has changed so much then... Been living in Bangkok for 7 years (actually my avatar is Bkk), would be nice to find more vid from Bkk from that time. Love Thailand
I've been to Thailand every year for 6 years now and I love it there so much. Only issue is that the rising Baht is really detrimental for Malaysia's currency. I'm afraid if it continues to rise then my friends and I have to consider other places to explore such as Vietnam :( But i still love Thailand no matter where I go
It was 1953 and I hear the keyword "democratic" multiple times in this video. Today in 2019, we hardly have anything democratic (the best one we have is our recent phony election which was rigged beyond imagination.) Almost 70 years and we are still struggling democratically. It's sad.
I still remember the pictures and events of that time. At that time I was 1 year old (born 1952). At that time I still liked Patti Page's Tennessee Waltz song (Release 1950)
@@jangsoodlor You mean the very basic ones, with fans only (I haven't been in Bkk for ten years, but those certainly looked like from the 80ies...Number 8, 92 and so on)?
Don't envy them, aunty. Every period has its own problem. Back in the day, people were panic whether the WWIII might erupted by ignition of the Korean war or not or what the outcome of the first Indo-China war ( franco-Viet minh) or The transition to communism of China would affect our country. You see?
My dad's family is still alive, and was in thailand or borned near when this video was recorded. But they are not native. My dad's family members are around 60 or more..
My Grandma was born in sisaket province in the 40's and I always wondered what isan was like back in the days. Probably incredibly beautiful. We need time travels 555
I like to enjoy youtube it make me update the world we lived and learn everything about it. I will turn 66 in Monday 6 of May it just a number not my spirit and my soul.😂😂😂😂
Woah no tall buildings in Bangkok yet in 1953? That's a big surprise! There are skyscrapers all over now. And only 1 million citizens back then! Now it's more than 8 million
"Thailand, outpost of democracy in SE Asia, bastion of freedom in this world of ours" - sadly, like so many other things, this aspect of Thailand has also been lost to the past.
Woahh that was amazing! The boat market seemed so crowded back there😂 Also, it’s my first time seeing a tram running in the city Lol Just love how neat and clean it was. Time machine needed!!
If I am not mistaken there are still some locations where you can see remnants of tram tracks, near ผ่านฟ้า if I remember correctly. 2bangkok.com used to have an article about it.
@@jotcw81 The tram is discontinued now, it has introduced when king rama 5 regime, he got the idea from the europeans. My dad was borned around 1959 and that time there is still trams in กรุงเทพ but not much. (sorry for my bad grammar)
Pleasantly surpsised to find that this documentary seems to actually respect its subject! Still plenty of odd turns of phrase and general exoticism...but stuff like this can sometimes have such disparaging takes! Happy to see one that doesn't. 🙂
Oh! So you must be now 2017 - (-1953) = 2970 years old now. Haha. Just kidding. I know what you mean. You should say only 'I was born in 1953.' because 1953 BC means 1953 years 'before christ'.
We received democracy that is not the most perfected administration but the least disadvantage. Why do Thai youths today not know his beautiful cultures and living.?.but always dream of other nations which are different in tribes and history. Thailand is the most peace and serene country in this world.(For one who can balance the materialism and spirit s)
