Thailand Bicycle Tour 2020 - Tarzan & Hilux The Bike

After 8 months locked down on Lanta during the global pandemic I needed an adventure, so I bought a mountain bike, outfitted it with touring gear, and caught the ferry to the mainland to ride 1,000 miles north through Thailand to Chiang Mai for the Loy Krathong festival. It was an adventure!

MASSIVE RESPECT FOR YOU MAN, legit riding in Thailand is something else with the road laws, drivers, weather, etc. But you've done it with all the hurdles.

Time to go tubeless. Changing tubes in the rain isn’t that much fun! It would have been nice hear you talk about the names of the places you were passing through and where you found nice small roads and where you were pretty much stuck on the highway. Very familiar with the crazy driving in Thailand so nice to know for route planning. Great riding and scenery. You knocked out some serious mileage!

Thank you! I had a good mix of small side roads and highway, it kinda depended on the day, the distance I was feeling I could do, and the options of accommodations that I could find on Google Maps. Honestly riding along the highway wasn't too bad and helped cover distance, but the side roads were definitely more interesting! Cheers!

In fact, I was looking for a bike for a long weekend touring with a friend of mine. And of course, it has to be a touring bike. But now I have a mountain bike. And I think it might not be suitable for long-distance travel. But then I changed my mind when I saw your video clip. I thought why not use the mountain bike I already have, it would be great too because I didn't have to spend money on a new bike. Thank you very much for the video clip.

I am going to purchase a touring bike , not too crazy expensive lol from Bangkok by train to Huahin and bikes from there to Krabi . Is there any problem taking the bike cycles on a train ?

@@jq1206 I didn't end up using the trains in Thailand. After my tour I used Thai Post to ship the bicycle back to Koh Lanta and caught a flight back to Krabi.

Not really, I got chased one night after dark while riding back to my hotel from dinner, but mostly the dogs were all chill and just watched me spin past, or didn't notice me at all, ha!

Hey man, me and my friends are planning to do this pretty soon. Have you got any tips/ things that were essential to do it? Was the danger on the highway easy to avoid?

Hey! When I did it Thailand was pretty quiet, but it made it easy to wake up and cycle each day and find a hotel room wherever I wanted each night. I never felt in too much danger on the roads and highways, there seem to be scooters and mopeds everywhere so I feel like the drivers were always aware of people on two wheels. There are plenty to see and lively in thailand. Riding thru america is much less enthusiastic because everything look the same from town to another town.

I went with an inexpensive bike from Decathlon. I think it kind of depends on what you're looking for, in the south I did not have as many hills as I did in the north. The electric bikes are cool, but will need to make sure you can continue to charge it up! Cheers!

@@lesleykenwood2715 Every morning I'd look at Google Maps about 100K away from me and see if the town had hotels. Typically I'd just ride in and get a room. It was during the pandemic so there were rooms available pretty much everywhere.

Nope, I found inexpensive hotels along the way, but I did meet another bicycle tourist during my time and he was traveling with a tent and staying at some of the temples along the way for free. I felt very comfortable cycling there, even if the roads didn't have shoulders most drivers are used to seeing 2 wheel scooters along the side of the road so I felt like cars and trucks saw me and gave me plenty of space too. Cheers!
