My experience in Thai hospitals were superior. I miss those standard's. Much better than in Canada. I was even in a rural town in southern Thailand and was treated with the utmost dignity and superior customer service. Technology and standards at par, and even slightly better than what I have available here.

Thank you for that video. Your idea of doing this walk through was well worth the effort you two put into it. We have visited Thailand several times and we’re not aware of the quality of the medical services and we’re pleased to watch as you went through the medical. I was blown away at the convenience and speed that the tests were performed. The final costs were a surprise. We are Canadian Snowbirds who rely on the Canadian health system and we wish things would be similar to your experience in Thailand. Excellent video and keep up the good work, we will be watching. As a side question do you guys ever supply the addresses of the Airbnb you use at your various locations.

That's a great price for the colonoscopy, I did mine last year here in Dallas at age 48, insurance was billed $2100 (I owed nothing out of pocket) but that was without any extras as nothing abnormal was found in the procedure. I wished they offered the comprehensive health check package here in the US for a fixed fee, would make things so much easier. I get mine done whenever i'm in India where they have similar packages, in India it costs under $100 and i've had a fantastic experience but good to know it's an option in Thailand as well.

This was very informative. You mentioned costs and I am assuming that the medical insurance coverage that you obtained separately didn’t cover these costs. One consideration generally for me as Canadian would be looking to keep Ontario health insurance which would cover periodic colonoscopies. This is a practical video useful to anyone thinking about retiring this way. Thanks!
@BrianandCarrie

Hi Robert! Our Cigna Global Plan we chose doesn't cover preventative care, so these costs were out of pocket. We intentionally chose the coverage we have knowing preventative care outside the states is typically quite affordable. We are looking at getting coverage in the states that would in the future cover those larger preventative costs like a colonoscopy. Thanks for watching! Cheers 🍻

Hi Brian and Carrie, I love this video as most RU-vidrs don’t really address this subject. Thanks for sharing the cost so your viewers know what to expect in the event they need these tests in a foreign country. Many commented here asking whether the travel insurance would cover these expenses. I personally don’t believe they do since these tests are not as a result of a medical emergency, I could be wrong here. Anyhow, keep up the great work and stay safe.

Well done guys. Very useful to see the quality and cleanliness of the hospital. Very reasonable prices. The colonoscopy could be the best $ $ you ever spent in your life Brian. In NZ bowel cancer is our biggest killer, and so curable if found early. Everyone over 50 should have one, but it will cost $3 - 4000, depending on whether you have polyps removed., probably the same or more in the US. I have been an endoscopy nurse, and if you don’t have health insurance privately it is difficult to get one as the waiting list is long in the public system. Good luck with the preparation 🤪😂

I think one of the things we were so impressed with was the fact we could just walk in to have so many tests completed right then. @@BrianandCarrie I was really impressed with the number of tests you had as well - and offering to schedule your procedure the very next day! Not going to start my usual rant about medical insurance in the US, but will only say that if a GP codes it as a wellness visit with my insurance, (s)he can't do anything else during the appt. Nothing. Otherwise, I'm only allowed to address TWO issues per appt and will have to go back for anything additional! My insurance company literally told me I had to just keep going back until all my questions were addressed two-at-a-time with another copay each visit. I'd always been so efficient with a bullet point list that my previous doctor said we got more done in 15 minutes than any appt the rest of his day. No more. I haven't been sick or gone to the doctor for anything in over four years -- just not worth it here.

I have lived in Chiang Mai for 45 years, as an Expat. I regularly use Chiang Mai Ram hospital, it's not like any hospital or clinic in the States. Waiting times for doctors with appointments is no more than 15 minutes. This hospital has all the facilities needed except for Kidney dialysis, which is handled at the Government Hospital, Suan Dork. The only specialty Thailand doesn't have is Podiatrist. Cases that require Podiatrist care are sometimes handled by Orthopedist, but they don't have the rigorous 8 year training needed to operate on ankles and feet.

We are both 51 and ready for a change of pace. Our pensions won't kick in until 62 along with our social security. But with the budget you have shown us I feel we could live quite comfortably off our home sale and 401ks. It's just getting the courage to make the plunge. But with every video of yours, we become a little more knowledgeable, and the idea seems a little less scary. Thank you both for your contribution to living your best life.

Different hospitals have different costs and levels of service. The Government hospitals tend like many state hospitals to be underfunded and understaffed, costs are low, waiting is long and indeed not everything is available especially in the rural areas. Then the non-state hospitals have a low, medium and high level sector which is not saying any are better than the rest but like a hotel it’s a 1, 2, 3, star service choice with waiting time and levels of accommodation being different Medical insurance is a must in Thailand, without it you pay - no state cover without paying

As for me, I now live in Queretaro Mexico and the medical care is second to none. Doctors here also make house calls and will bring in a technician for any test that need to be done. It was amazing i was seen on the very day i made the appointment and offered a MRI the same afternoon the health care is fantastic. I live in the uk and the NHS national health service is not fit for purpose. Its virtually impossible to get a doctors appointment and if you do its a 3 to 4 week waiting time, I've been waiting 12 months to get to see my dentist also Nurses and ambulance staff are constantly on strike at the moment. Great overview of your experience! So inconceivable why the USA doesn’t have a similar system of providing comprehensive wellness checks at a reasonable fee. Question regarding your Colonoscopy. I was surprised you were able to schedule a colonoscopy so quickly. Normally, you have to undergone a week long “cleanse” to empty your bowel s of all matter in order to get a “clear” picture to see any growths/polyps. Did your colonoscopy involve a cleanse, anesthesia , etc?

Pretty interesting info. It must be super hard eating healthy when you’re on a permanent vacation. I’m in Canada and for all of those tests, my cost would have been free. The prescription I just filled, with coverage was just over $7. Wait times, however, is Canada’s number 1 issue. 2 weeks to see the doctor if you have one. Many don’t. And months to get a colonoscopy unless there are red flags. Plus, my husbands doctor recently told him they used to recommend colonoscopies at 50 but don’t anymore. Snack packs or coffee…lol…awesome service! Curious about the 2 types of mammograms though? I’ve never heard of that. Take care!

Hi! We are finding it easier here in SE Asia to eat healthier as the portion sizes are smaller and there are plenty of veggie options. But the night markets and the street food options are hard to pass up all the time - moderation is key 😂. It is sad how it seems to be the standard of testing recommendation seems to be changing - I've heard that about a few tests that used to be standard at a specific age. Makes you wonder if that all comes down to cost? As for the mammograms, I wanted to have the regular one as well as an ultrasound. This is something I've needed in the past to rule out any issues and I just felt I would be more comfortable having that here as well. Thanks so much for watching! Cheers 🍻

I am from New York but living in Saigon for the last 30 years. I went for a comprehensive medical exam last year including blood and urine analyses, EKG, chest scan, ultra sound, endoscopy and colonoscopy. The grand total came to about the equivalent of 500USD at one of the better city owned hospitals. There are more upscale options at private facilities however I do not think that the results would have been any different. My wife is a dual citizen of the US and Vietnam which allows her to be covered under Vietnam's state system which costs about 35 dollars per year and which pays 80% of the cost at the government owned facilities such as where I had my examination and so she would have paid about 100 dollars for the same. I remain "self insured" but always have the option to go to America and get treatment under medicare as I am over 65. For now I will keep taking care of my usual needs here in Vietnam even though I have to pay some cost. The problem with the US these days is that you never really know what things will cost. The last time I was in the US back in 2019 I fractured my ankle and was fitted with a boot being my first experience with medicare. Nobody told me that the boot costs about 200 dollars more than what medicare provides and so I had to pay the difference plus co-pays.

Just curious, does the medical insurance you carry while traveling cover any of these costs? The costs are definitely reasonable, although the colonoscopy is a bit high, but here in the USA it would be a LOT more if someone were to get that same procedure as an uninsured or "cash" patient. When I had mine done here, it only cost me my co-pay of $50 or so, which was why I was curious if the medical insurance you carry will pick up any of the costs of the colonoscopy. Or is that just a basic travel insurance policy that only covers emergencies? Great info. Good luck Brian!
