People don’t feel safe anymore in Thailand. News is saying that Thailand has a problem with weapons, drugs, rape and thefts. How do people experience this? We ask some locals and some tourists to get a better understanding of whether Thailand is still safe or not.

I am amazed and surprised to hear the first lady's comment as I feel CM is a very peaceful and one of the safest places in TH. However, I haven't visited there since covid. All I can say is that, as a native of Bangkok, I feel very safe living here and almost everywhere in the country (except 3 southernmost provinces). Pickpockettings do occur in some tourist spots and I heard they're mostly committed by people from neighboring countries. After all, I can say Thais regard tourists as our visitors/guests and we always prioritize their wellness and safety. Officials also pay heedful attention to these aspects. Ones that do wrong to the tourists would be normally condemned by people in the society. That's not to say we treat each other differently but just that tourists or guests are highly prioritized in the country. I hope you can already feel it without anybody sayings. PS: As everything here these days is much politicized to some degrees, there's a reminder that CM is the major home base of the opposition party and is the hometown of corruption-convicted ex-PM now in exile. I think people's opinion may differ more or less by the political influence in each area/province too. BTW, I like your street chats very much. It's really interesting and enjoyable. Keep going!

My2cents, Sorry for my late reply! Thank you so much for your valuable input 🙏🏼 There's definitely some wisdom in it. I hope people don’t we afraid of other people just because what they hear on the news. Thanks for making this video, Chai. I think it's important not to let tragedies like the one that occured in Isan become a source of fear for the citizens as well as potential travelers. I live in the US where we have these kinds of shootings regularly, so I usually feel safer when I'm traveling outside of my country. For instance, I've traveled a few times to South Africa. I heard before I went that it was very dangerous and that I should be careful. My experience was the opposite. What I found was a beautiful country with very kind, welcoming people, abundant wildlife, and no difficulties whatsoever. Maybe I'm lucky, but I've gone a lot of places and I've enjoyed something about all of them! Also, I'm an architect, so I'm looking forward to the treehouse video!

Hey Chai, this was a really interesting episode. I know it was a little different from the norm but it's important to talk about the good as well as the bad. The one lady from Chiang Mai who said she didn't always feel safe echoed the sentiments of my friend from Chiang Mai (also a lady). I always disagreed with her when she said it can be a very risky place for women but I guess they know better than us. Bottom line: I guess no place is 100% danger free but Thailand is still better than most, IMO. Keep 'em coming!

I was born and raised in BKK, now moving to Pathumthani, but visiting my parent in BKK regularly. After watching this episode, I am unexpected shocked by the local in CM and that open my eyes about other thoughts a lot because I ‘ve never known that our folk feel like that. For me I ‘ve never felt unsafe anywhere in my country. I’m quite confused now, am I too careless? 😅

Yes, I believe Thailand is safer than many other countries around the world. In my opinion, Thailand has more scams than real crimes. Most tourist are the target of these scams, because some people (not all) feel tourists have money to be had, so why not take advantage of them. One common issue that I've heard from many Thais is, they find it difficult to find a job, especially if older than 40. My Thai friend said that she has no issues finding work, because she has vast restaurant experience, but others are not so lucky, so a few turn to darker avenues to make a living. But I definitely feel safe, everytime I've visited the Land of Smiles. Horrific crimes occur everywhere in the world, but seem to be less frequent in Thailand, imo.

And every where got CCTV ,and as the local your need to believe and trust in community. To get rap not easy But asked yourself first why?In Chiangmai not all of them are local , some of them moved there just for business and new resident. Hi Panna 🙏🏼 still I’m thankful she was taking her time to talk to us. I think the internet and the news she’s seeing is making her afraid. It’s a shame because I think Thailand is one of the safest countries in the world, also for ladies 🏆
@sasiya5698
@sasiya5698 Год назад
Actually she’s not badmouthing her own country she was just saying her point of view and it is true , I would say it’s not tht safe first of all because of the law is not very strict like when you commit serious crime if you have money you can get over with it and change from wrong to right , also when criminals are out of jail they commit again and again . Nowadays , drugs became so much cheaper and people who used it just go crazy and kill other people
@sasiya5698
@sasiya5698 Год назад
Also the news ( local TV ) everytime I watch the news mostly is about killing , drugs users , rape and car accident . I would say it’s not safe because of the laws are not so strict so people are not scared to commit crime . After all I’m not saying its bad but it’s not super safe and yah it is important to be aware of surrounding& yourself too because anything could just happen . 🙏🏻

Considering how common guns now are in the US & even Canada, and also how common knife crimes are in the UK & parts of Europe, westerners are far more used to living with the unrest of violence than say Asians. I had been looking at gun violence and gun crime in Thailand just days before the recent massacre, and here's what I gathered: ~ Thailand has the highest % of gun ownership in all of SE Asia, mostly illegal purchase. ~ Most of the violence is limited to local fights, squabbles, gang runs during seasonal farming of wildlife/nature, and ofc drug cartels. ~ Gun violence/illegal ownership is intrinsically linked to drug cartels, especially trans-country corridors and drug movement. Since Thailand law & order has a rather relaxed approach to drugs compared to other SE Asian countries, it invites a similar slack approach to gun ownership. Gun ownership is always an iffy subject. So many will vouch for it saying its better to be armed, but global evidence only shows its misuse leads to sole-gunman massacres. More economic unrest and mental health issues means higher potential for sole-gunman incidents.
