A collection of recent Thames mudlarking finds, some of which I could do with some help identifying ; A William IV pendant, a bottle stop and an interesting codd bottle, with H.W.Stevens, Colchester, Ipswich, Clacton on Sea on it. If you have any information on any of the pieces in this video, Id be delighted to hear from you!
Thank you.

It’s amazing how many people from all round the world you touch with your finds. It’s much more than mudlarking as most other mudlarks find things, but you find parts of a story of real tangible people. You have a beautiful gift that captures so many people, including myself.

Hello Nicola, during my time working for a large company, whenever we needed a tool that wasn't part of our kit, we would loan it from the company stores. In doing so we would leave behind one of our personnel tags to insure that the company got their tool back. Simple system, but it worked.

I do the same here in Charleston South Carolina, our finds are limited to 350-400 years old because the nation has a much shorter history, but what really impressed me was what you do with your finds! What a great way to share them with people in the form of art. The glass fish are beautiful and the way the pipes were arranged in the art. Great ideas.👍🏼🙏🏼

Dear Steve - I should be so lucky! NZ was "founded" ( and I am so going to get into trouble for this) in 1840 when the British Government signed the Treaty of Waitangi with the indigenous Māori people who arrived here in the 14thC. They were a stone age people - so virtually NO finds. If you find stone or greenstone it belongs to the crown. 1780 onwards, you have to look in areas of habitation - in a country of NOW 4.5million. Australia is a little better I believe. I will not be discouraged though. It just makes a bit more of a challenge!!

half penny? Haypenny or hape knee :-) I am old enough to have spent them . a shilling is a bob. i used tags like that when i was serving my apprenticeship. Tool tokens ,which we carried around in our pockets on a clip and would draw tools from the tool store with them.Also, when stripping the Roll Royce engines we would tie metal tags like that to each part so they would be returned to that particular engine after reconditioning . The number signified either team or shop number or the job number.

We called a shilling a bob, ten shilling note was ten bob. My sister was born 1956 and me 1958, I was sad when we changed over to 'new' money. My Dad was a coach builder and worked for a while in Coventry, I think, on Rolls Royce. Him and Mum mainly worked for the bus company, Mum was a conductress and they used tokens in the canteen.

It's a way of controlling the whereabouts of tools. Tags are used on tool boards, so when a mechanic/engineer etc takes a tool from stores to do a job, a tag is placed on a nail in the board where the tool was taken from (hence the hole in the tag), so it's known who has the tool as everyone has their own number given to them

I have just started detecting. I was always the one "fossicking" on the beach when everyone else was sunbathing (which I hate). I used to love old pottery and sea glass. You got ALOT in Scotland. I live in NZ now, you get very little in the way of "people " debris on the beach. You get shells, the odd whale, penguin, seal or dolphin - a few years ago a container ship went aground on a reef and we got containers and their contents all along the Bay. Children bikes, lawnmowers, cow skins, nappies, toys.... the oil spill was terrible but killed the fleas for a few years. Occasionally you get huge landings of "wind sailor "jellyfish, bizarre little alien blue things. Or big purple ones. Lots of palm beans. I live in hope of finding ambergris one day, but knowing my luck, my greedy little mini poodles will gobble it before I can bend down to pick it up. I really like your videos, and your art. Turning found "detritus" into something beautiful is a wonderful thing to do. I especially like the fish, as I have lots of fish art. Please keeping doing what you do so well.💐😊

Oh wait! I have a tiny Nicola story after all,because I love the idea that Nicola can shrink! Nicola,mudlarking around,finding little tidbits here and there,suddenly shuddered,and shrinks down to ,well,do I need to start using metric? Yes,I do. Nicola shrinks down to 4 centimeters tall. She continues to lark about,despite her miniaturized state. She comes across a button,huge in size,due to her being so small, Suddenly,a cacophony of swishy swirty sounds begins to approach. Tiny Nicola turns around,to find a group of crabs approaching! Tiny Nicola immediately grabs the button,and uses it as a shield! The crabs,taken aback at this little warrior,retreat,and Nicola does a teeny tiny victory dance!

The Marines button had Queen Victoria's crown on it. The broke through button was a Black Watch Victorian. The numbered disc was a Dockers check disc. They couldn't afford to have stray cockneys in the warehouses after closing hours. An old but handy system also used by mine workers. They used them like clocking in & out in a factory today. Great bottle finds too. I found a king William IV era infantry officers sword a few weeks ago. I'd not heard of Him before. His name & title attracted me to this vlog.

About the tag. I think it might have been used for the shipyards worker. We had the same system at a shipyard in Gothenburg i worked in at the 80s. The shipyard only have som many specialtools. Every worker might have their own spanner, handsaw, hammer and so on, but when need of a special toll, they had to borrow it from a special onthepremises loanchop. Every worker got probably 10 tags, with their employmentnumber on. When loaning a tool, they gave back a tag, that was hanged up on a small hook with the name of the tool. If tag was lost, they had to replace the tool. Probably the same system 100 or more years ago. You couldnt trust a worker to give back a expensive tool just by faith.

nicola white mudlark - Tideline Art Hiyah, Good afternoon Nicola, Up here the main river is pretty much inaccessible due to the bank sides level of sludge and waste ( pollution from the 19th century when we used the river way as a sewage runaway ) so it's just not a nice place to adventure, But the best places I've found are little village rivers that run from the hills,much cleaner and greener 🍃 I usually come across alot of old bottle tips on the bank side - to which I've gained a nice little collection of poison, codd, and stone ginger bottles ( my favourite), in the feilds you may come across some old coins or agricultural related relics but nothing compared to the wide variety of what lies in that Thame of yours,my goodness me, I wish lived down, I could spend all day mudlarking , I wish you lovely day, and safe steps on your adventures , fare well.

@SuperDancingdevil 6 лет назад
nicola white mudlark - Tideline Art Good Morning Nicola I've just looked closer at the line after "Anno" and it looks like 1830 in which case that is the year of William IV coronation and as I notice there is a touch of gilt around the edge would suggest that it was once gold plated, The Black discoloration threw me for a while there, So revising my initial thoughts on what it is given that date it's a commemorative medal for his coronation and it must have looked very smart in it's day and not for the ordinary person in the street but for the middle or upper middle class as it would probably been expensive, Again if i find out more I shall let you know....oh as an added idea of what it may be the same year 1830 is when George IV died which makes sense as there are two coats of arms on that medal which would be Williams and George's I should think.
@nicolawhitemudlark
@nicolawhitemudlark 6 лет назад
lance allison thanks Lance. Can you make out what it says on the line above!
@SuperDancingdevil
@SuperDancingdevil 6 лет назад
nicola white mudlark - Tideline Art That line is very indistinct and comparing it to other images I've seen of that coat of arms particularly on a sovereign there is no swag below it with writing in it, It may well be a touch of artistic license by the person who designed it, If it was important to that coat of arms it would show up clearly as a faithful reproduction would, Usually those seats would hold a family motto in Latin such as "Vincit Veritas" (Truth Conquers) which is my families motto and it is as I said an important part of arms, I still have a lot of images to check and will let you know what i find.

Wonderfully colorful finds there, Nicola. I believe the William IV find was actually a commemorative luggage tag sold by many of the vendors in and around Heathrow Airport during the holidays of evenly numbered years since 1970. Supposedly it was commissioned by Margaret Thatcher (or as her friends called her, Mags) during a short period when Prince Charles went through a phase trying to collect all of the William IV action figures available in only the finest boutiques of London. The luggage tags still enjoy a modest following among collectors. However it is rumored to be that Prince Charles does not share any such fortune as even having followers. Yet it is reported to be his position that history will vindicate him and he will one day be bestowed with a luggage tag or, perhaps, a key ring of his own. ;-)

Right, then...I gather my sense of humor is not appreciated. Got it. I promise never to impose it upon you again.

Looks like someone made that hole in that 1830s "coin" pendant. The hole was made right thru the top of the crown or hat so it didnt look like it should have been there. Its possible the pendant was inlaid in some other object?

yes I think you could be right there about it being inlaid in some other object - given the markings on the other side.

Well, it sure was a nice find, hope you eventually have some luck figuring out just what the heck it is. Sure am glad I discovered your videos, watching you mudlarkers pull these treasures out sure is enjoyable. The best for me is when you finish a video with examples of your art- beautiful!

I sometimes mudlark Essex estuary and find bowls and bits of clay pipe but never anything like this. How lucky considering how easy these break.

We have something in common, it's snowing here too. If you'd like a change of pace you can come and help me feed my 268 cows in the morning, in the snow and I'll come and help you find relics in the afternoon, in the snow!! Keep your nose in the tide-line, all the best to you and yours Nicola. Billy in B.C., Canada

The Badges: Here in the US they are called "Bassing". When I worked on a heavy construction job as a secretary I was issued a number and a brass disc. When I checked in in the morning I took my brass off a board marked with the corresponding number. When I left in the evening I replaced my brass onto the board. They are for attendance and safety records.

brass tag might be from the railroad. Looks like fun, I'd be doing the same thing. I'll be watching any other vids you post.
