That's the only scene that may have added something, but It may have also signaled Joey's transformation too soon.

Yeah it was cute. Maybe because it didn't "up the stakes." Seemed small compared to his epic negotiation with his mom right before that. Had they gone further and Joey had halfway talked the flight attendant into letting him have a beer or something (and his dad had to intervene and say no, etc), then gold. But then... time.

My friend had the same impression. That's the reason I've even found out there were deleted scenes. Maybe some channels aired it with an alternate ending. Weeird stuff happens on TV from time to time. Like French TVs running Who Framed Roger Rabbit with all three censored scenes being uncensored. Or Russian TV changing the end titles' song in Jackie Chan's first Armor Of God onto some obscure version of High Upon High which is still not available anywhere else as far as I know.

Yeah, wtf was up with that scene? Completely unbelievable.

The point of the movie is that bald-faced liars can be shallowly plausible and commitment can go right to the bone. That's true. That scene undercuts that message. It makes it a hypocracy, a thick shield of lies covering a man's soul. It's more realistic and more sinister if it is the commitment of a true believer, or a totally committed liar who will take his second thoughts to the grave. As if there's a difference between the two flavors of soullessness.
