"It is with a great deal of sadness, but also tremendous gratitude and affection, that I announce that Peggy Baker is retiring from her job as Docent at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. For over thirty years Peggy has worked in that capacity. She has been a faithful and loyal employee and has served the Cathedral and its parishioners and visitors well.
Peggy began working as the Cathedral Docent a little over thirty years ago, when Brother Robert Sokolowski invited her to “create” that position. Prior to that time, visitors would come through the Cathedral, but there was no organized welcome for them, and nothing was being sold in the back of the Church. Peggy, and later John Woods, were the first two. In the last thirty years the number of visitors to the Cathedral has dramatically increased and continues to grow as the tourism industry in Savannah grows. In 2013 when I came to the Cathedral as Rector, Peggy greeted me warmly and playfully. She warned me that if I did anything she didn’t like she would tell my mother! It was in that year that Peggy’s dear husband, Frank Baker, passed away. Frank was a fixture in the life of the Cathedral and of the Knights of Columbus. I hope that in some way Peggy’s work at the Cathedral has helped her adjust to Frank’s loss.
Peggy will continue to be around the Cathedral, and I will always look forward to seeing her whenever she is here. God bless you Peggy!"
