*December was a religious experience for me. The very first time I heard it, I was stricken. I've been listening to winston (n=mostly December and Winter Into Spring) for more than 30 years now, and it become even more sacred on each listening. I don't know where talent like Winston's comes from, but he is a once in a lifetime gift to us all.*

Rest in peace, dear man... You touched many lives over the years, but you moved my oldest daughter who learned your songs by heart and when you met her, so many years back when she was quite young (she is now in her 40's), you asked her to play her version of your song, Thanksgiving. You, in your white socks, post concert, listened to her rendition and gave her encouragement to keep on playing; you gave her more of you that night. You touched her deeply, so of course you did the same to her mama. Blessed be.. You will be missed.

I can't listen to this without crying. It's so beautiful, and will always remind me of my mom. She introduced me to Winston's music when I was a child more than 30 years ago. If I could listen to one album for the rest of my life, it would be December. Of course his Spring album played at my wedding, which is also dear.

Gracias George.

OMG I first knew that this song's title is THANKSGIVING... I thought it was December so far...... When I was very young before entering elementary school, my eldest sister bought this piano sheets and used to play it to me... now I'm 28 years old and she's 41... It's a song with nostalgic childhood.

I have been listening to George Winston since the early Windham Hill Records days, (for me circa 1981.) I was fortunate enough to have seen him live, a number of times at the Kennedy Center, (Washington, DC.,) and even at the Auditorium of Southeast Missouri State University, sometime back in the 1990s. He is a unique and rare talent in a collection of wast oceans of folks who play the piano, and he inspired me to be a better on the piano. (Though I still cannot read music.) :) (If you folks like his solo works, you should also listen to the "Country" soundtrack by Windham Hill Records, where you can hear Mr. Winston play along with other highly talented musicians.) Thank you for sharing this clip.

It's fascinating to here the composer play it, compared to my wife, who has memorized many piano pieces. I hope I am not being unfair, when I say my wife does a better job playing it. Her interpretation is even more haunting, so far as I can hear. Thanks, George. And thanks, baby!

Was first introduced to George Winston by a beautiful young girl named Margaret Macgraw, back in 1983. I was smitten by her and wrote her an entire chapbook of poetry. She left for UConn to study marine biology, and I never heard from her again. But I always wondered what became of her life. I hope it turned out to be as beautiful as she was. I'm not sure she realized that she introduced me to George Winston, but my life has been better for it.

Should you have occasion to see him in person, you will find his technique to be anything but "quite basic." There were times when his performance seemed beyond human capacity. I have never seen anything quite like it. I do not doubt that there is hope for us all, but George Winston is a rare talent, in my opinion.

This beautiful performance takes me back to Korea, 2001. US Army, landed in Seoul after 14 hours plus connections. Our ROK driver asked if we wanted some music, sure. Koreans are big G. Winston fans. This arrangement takes me back to that midnight ride from Soeul airport to Song Bong DAE, 3D ROK HQ were I served as a liaison officer with USFK.

I love George Winston. I grew up on his music. I remember sneaking into the piano practice rooms at university and spending hours learning how to play his songs (by ear because I couldn't read music). My only minor criticism is at concerts George likes to experiment and add little improvisational flourishes to his songs and it changes the rhythm sometimes or alters the melody just enough to take me out of the moment. That said, Thanksgiving and Joy are two of the most achingly beautiful pieces ever written on piano. Every note holds a place in my heart.

RIP. A talented, warm-hearted soul left us this week. I just listened to the album Autumn again. When Love/ Longing came on, the tears started flowing. I was introduced to his music in college and it became the soundtrack for so many touchpoints in my life, particularly my late teens and 20's. One flaw with streaming is music falls off your radar. That was one benefit of CDs. A jacket for an album you hadn't played in a year would catch your eye and you would start listening to it again.
