Today we are picking cucumbers, planting the last of our sweet potato slips, and making some very simple dill pickles! The garden is starting to slowly come in!
Dill Pickles
-8 lbs cucumbers
-3/4 cup sugar
-1/2 cup preserving salt
-1 quart water
-1 quart vinegar
-Dill
-Garlic
Prepare cucumbers, wash them under cold water, or let them sit in ice bath until ready to use. Use whole, cut into spears or slices. Combine sugar, salt, vinegar, and water in a large pot, bring mixture to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Put a piece of dill in the bottom of jar along with 1 clove of garlic. Pack cucumbers into jar, put another piece of dill and a garlic clove on top. Ladle hot pickling liquid over pickles until your 1/2 inch from top. Put lid and ring on jar. (Recommended)Water bath for 15 minutes. Let jars cool for 24 hrs. Remove ring, store in cool dark place.

I know y'all are busy and have a lot to do. But I really think you should consider this suggestion. From personal experience, I believe an above ground irrigation system is better than a drip system or an in ground system. You can design it any way you like. I have found that the magic number is 8 ft above the ground. The nozzle should be pointed toward the ground. I use an adjustable nozzle to control the width of the spray. I also create watering zones with PVC ball valves. Personally I like to irrigate at night. The system imitates a gentle rain. Not only does the ground get a good soaking but the above ground greenery gets a good bath. Keeps the plants clean and has a tendency to wash off parasitic bugs. Just a thought.

First, happy birthday Jacob!🎉 Heres a thought for watering away from the house. 55 gallon drums. Put in a faucet at the bottom that you can hook a hose to. Put the drums up on your truck bed, fill them up. Then you just drive the truck over and water your garden. This won't work for areas to big of course. But if might be just enough to get your garden thru to when it finally does rain. Just a thought for anyone out there with this problem. I know all about praying for rain, as i live down in phoenix az. Going to be 106 here today!

Hey ya'll! Praying for rain for everyone! We are an hour from the coast, in Bladen county, and everything has dried up. Since the hailstorm a month ago, we've had no rain at all. Thank God I preserved more than normal last year. Everyone need to learn the old ways. I'm very blessed and have an old well to water my garden and animals.

I have 3 Marketmore cucumber vines growing in an arched cattle panel and have canned 16 jars sweet pickles, 20 relish and 12 jars of Christmas pickles. We pick and eat cucumbers everyday and now am giving cucumbers to all the neighbors. All that from just 3 plants and there are tons of baby cukes on the vines. I'm new to your channel and am really enjoying ya'll being real.

With my tomatoes, I just cut off the bottom sun branches to keep the plants off the ground. They do better than full pruning.
@danabaker596
@danabaker596 2 месяца назад
I agree. I only took off bottoms that were on the ground and looked kind of "rough". Other than that, I let them grow, and it's usually just fine. Lots of tomatoes! I get overwhelmed by all the "you have to prune correctly", "you have to get this sucker, and that sucker, but not this one". 😂😂 Sometimes we have to "let go and let God" be in control.

Megan, make sure to detassle the corn. (Pull those tops off). It will make your corn bigger. It causes all the energy of the plant to go in the corn. Next time you plant, try 1 dead minnow and 3 corn seeds, thin out to save the best one after they come up. Hope that helps if your interested.

Had an old apple farmer tell us he used baby powder on the lower limbs of his trees to help with deer. Said it dries their mouth out. A few years ago we started using it and it took care of all the deer and rabbits eating our garden plants. Any time we find any eaten areas we but it on plant’s and we are good, plus it’s cheap.

Praying for rain for all the farmers and homesteaders. Is there any way for you to come up with a rain catchment system? My garden is really really small, but I added grow bags this year and asked for a 75 gallon water drum that we hooked up to the rain gutters. I feel good during these hot days of over 100 degrees, I have that “extra” to draw from to water those bags. Dumb question…why doesn’t anyone make sweet pickles? 😋😂 have a great day! 😊

I love caraway seeds in my pickles, 1/2 tsp per quart jar plus garlic. Also, I have one tomato that has produced six thick (about 16"-18") sucker branches, so I've taken those and planted them deep in the ground in wet soil removing all but the tip top small branches, watering them three times a day for three days in this heat, and they've all taken off like crazy. They look wilted at first but come around after a couple of days. Should have some good tomatoes shortly. One day I was picking the weeds out of the top of the brick fence surrounding my property and thought to myself that if there's good dirt in there for weeds, why not plant tomato seeds in the top of the fence and let them grow down. I did, and they are growing nicely, too. Who'd have thought to do that? Lived in this house 65 years, and just now my pea brain came up with that idea. Lolol.

Give those banana peppers some gypsum . It could be a calcium deficiency instead of insect damage. We don't usually have pest that loves peppers. Pickle worms got the majority of my cukes this year and that was a first for me. Soaker hoses would work better than the over head watering and no evaporation or causing disease like powdery mildew. We are in a serious drought in Alabama too. Thankfully I sold all my chickens a month ago, but I'm having to water my garden every day on city water so you know my bill is going to be huge, but I can't let all that hard work and money die. When watering that often I feed the plants once a week with Agrothrive fruit and flower. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JACOB!🎂🍿🍭🍰🍧

I made a video about why cucumbers look like that, especially in dry weather. Cucumbers need to be pollinated multiple times to form nice cucumbers. With a lower moisture level they are less likely to attract pollinators because of less nectar and pollin. You'll notice that there aren't seeds in the smaller areas of the cucumbers because they weren't completely. pollinated

Ya hauling water sux. Have fields and livestock to water everyday in this weather. Rain water is what plants really want and need, so we collect all we can or pull from ponds. We're also having to feed hay (lower SC). We're definitely rain deficient and already hitting most 100*. Yesterday's heat index was 114*. Im already over it. Ha!

The Husband/Wife dynamic is defiantly alive and well in your household. I get such a kick out of listening to you converse with each other while seamlessly finishing each others thought's. That, I'm sure, comes from being together constantly, and it's endearing to watch. I so enjoy your video's, and watching experienced gardeners do your thing, is just great.
