They’re both so different… I think I prefer Janine for this personally. Hilary’s forever mind blowing - particular her Stravinsky.

This concerto was supposed to be dedicated to Pablo de Sarasate. But he refused to play the world premiere. He said "I'm not willing to stand there in the slow movement Violin in hand, idle, while the oboe has the most beautiful melody." Well I guess his disadvantage was that he was not as lovely as Janine, who can stand there all day just listening. ;) Also huge shoutout to the NHK-Orchestra. I have never heard them play before but this is really first class.

The oboe player, starting around 25:02 plays a phrase over 30 seconds in length from one breath. That is amazing control.

Please do Shostakovich 1st violin concerto, then the 2nd! Both masterpieces but incredibly different, much like the cello concertos. His second of both were written much later in life and are much darker. All mentioned above are bangers! X

It is an amazing concerto, and they all did a very good job. Janine Jansen never disappoints. She nailed the Tchaikovsky and the Brahms too, no wonder.

You should watch Ray Chen’s Smash Bros gaming stream with this concerto as BGM. His emotional roller coaster syncing with up and down of melodies is just hilarious to watch. After watching this game stream, I can’t listen to this masterpiece as same as I used to.

If you think the violin solo passage that begins at 9:37 of your video sounds a bit like a heavy metal guitar solo, that's because the first movement of this concerto was hugely influential on metal guitarists. It's a prime example of how classical music works its way into popular genres, sometimes under the surface.

if you have the chance, i'd definitely recommend reacting to daniil trifonov's performance of rachmaninov's variations on a theme of chopin; it's a fantastic piece and an incredible rendition by trifonov

@@moko156 yeahhh indeed its great!!! I listen to a lott of bruckner (and classical music in general) I think this is one of my favorite symphonies of all symphonies!!!
