Someone dropped the ball in promoting these ladies it seems. This is high quality indie pop/rock confection and their more aggressive power pop is also killer.
Everyone always blames lack of financial success on lack of promotion. It’s just denial plain and simple. Not to mention how financial success does not mean something is great in any other way.
@@Kuato Their first couple of albums were loaded with tracks that were top notch. I also said, "it seems". It could have been other factors but I wouldn't doubt it if their label said, "Very nice, the critics love you but how do we sell this?" that dog is pretty damn quirky and outside the box. It doesn't mean it sucks by any means. Maybe in some ways they were ahead of their time.
Only reason I even knew about them then was because of their "Hey Old Timer" video being shown on Beavis & Butthead, and I think I saw this video once late at night. Apparently(according to what people mentioned before in the comments), they weren't as well promoted by their record company.
I have, and always will love That Dog. So. Frickin'. GOOD! Everyone loves the Haden sisters, but how about some love for Anna? She's terrific! Also, I was so lucky to have seen them live on the tour for this album (opening for Matthew Sweet) because their harmonies live are EVEN BETTER. Holy crap, some of the best I've ever heard live...right up there with Jess & Holly from Lucius.
Chillin on the 4th chord and landing on the "and 1" every time really gives this song that sense of anticipation. It only seems to resolve in the verses.
Ridiculously great! I've always loved this song! Retreat from The Sun is one of my all-time favorite albums. Criminally underrated! I used to have the biggest Petra crush back in the day. I hope this amazing band tours again soon! It's been so long since I have seen them live! Love That Dog!!
I can say with absolute 100% certainty the musicianship of this group, both core members and the people they played with live at times was serious professional top level playing. :)
As someone who would consider 90s music as my favorite genre, I'm surprised this band went under my radar. Just discovered them through the opening title song for the show Yellowjackets
I had this album in the '90s before I moved to the UK and left my CD collection with my parents. I was googling the lyrics for months trying to remember what the song or band was called and so pleased I found it!
Wow the singer sounds eerily similar to Liz Phair! I never knew about this band until I read some comments on some The Rentals videos. This is my first time hearing them and they sound great! Another great band from the 90's I missed out on. Better late than never I guess.
in case you haven't heard it, you might like weezer's pinkerton b-side "i just threw out the love of my dreams." the singer from this band does vocals. pretty good song!
@@itsatimemachine Awesome! Thank you for the heads up! I like Weezer too and I just listened to it. Good song! I was talking about Anna Waronker in my previous comment but it looks like Rachel Haden (bassist of That Dog) sings this song. She sounds great! Thanks again! :)
ahhh, the magickal 90's. i wrote a love letter to rachel haden and gave it to her at the weezer tribute show for mykel and carli (their 'biggest fans' and head of the weezer fanclub who died in a tragic car accident) at the palace theater in los angeles in 1997. i'm a dork. i miss the fucking 90's.
I saw this band live in 1995 when they toured with Foo Fighters... can't remember any songs but I remember they rocket that violin with a wah-wah at the stage.
it was 1996..I saw That Dog w/ Foo Fighters at the American Theater March 26, 1996. That Dog toured w/ Weezer in 1995 in support of Totally Crushed Out and the Blue Album. I was there also
@@Onlypcgaming I saw Weezer in 1995 but that dog was not supporting. Instead, Weezer was opening up for Lush. I was there to see Lush and made it a point to get to the venue before Weezer started because I wanted to know what all the hoopla about Weezer was. Within 10 seconds of them starting "My Name Is Jonas", I knew exactly what they were talking about. The contrast of intensity between the clean-ish intro and the wall of crunchy sound of the first two lyrical lines pretty much sealed the deal for me right then and there.
I almost saw them but should have left my apartment earlier and should have rode my bike from Marietta to the Masquerade instead of taking the damn bus. I would have made it in just under an hour if I had treated it like a workout, the bus took almost two. I got there as the Foo Fighters were starting their second song and missed both that dog and The Amps. I had heard a couple of that dog tracks and owned The Amps "Pacer" LP. I did say hi to Kim Deal I was walking past her bus and she was getting on it.
I saw this band on the second stage for the Y100 Feztival in Camden NJ, 1997. It had been so long since this show, OR since I had even heard this song, that I had to look up the lineup of bands just to see if I could find this song again! Found, and it's still an amazing track!
There's many bands who should be very appreciative to the show BTVS. I would never know of half these cool bands/songs. I instantly knew there was some kind of connection with this band and The Rentals.
That is a very good ear! For a few years there was a great club scene in LA. Lots of collaborations, great bills for shows. It was all in a way centered on the mid to late 90's "Power Pop" vibe. Many of these bands influenced each other so the fact you made that connection is impressive and there are a lot of great stories and great music developed in the culture created by those bands. Not all made it big but they all made cool music and were part of what made that time and place special.
I heard this on the Power Pop station on the long-defunct Launchcast Radio over 10 years ago and I’ve been hopelessly infatuated with it ever since. It makes me wish I was old enough to be a teenager in the ‘90s.
The effect of the burgeoning pop scene is shown here in Anna Waronker's look and the flashiness of the video. A few years before, bands like this were covered up in jeans, baggy shirts and simple haircuts. Even pop alternative radio was shying away from this genre.
How did I miss this? Gee, I'm only 26 years too late to the party. VERY cool song! I definitely need to check out the album. BTW, a little fascinating genealogy, from Wikipedia: "Anna Jeanette Waronker is an American singer-songwriter, composer, and producer best known as the frontwoman of That Dog. She is the daughter of producer Lenny Waronker and actress and musician Donna Loren, the sister of session drummer Joey Waronker, and is married to Steven Shane McDonald of Melvins and Redd Kross." Quite the credentials.
I loved this band so long ago. Anna Waronker's husband, Steven McDonald, is the bassist for OFF! [The only way for that dog. & OFF! might share a bill is at some stupid festival (which LA seems to have plenty of them).]
Fell in love with these girls at a Counting Crows concert @ the VA Beach Amphitheater.... They were paid absolutely zero attention. Why? Because people only love what they have been trained to like. And yes that 99% means you... hate the radio
I used to go to shows 30% to check out the headliner, but 70% to check out the openers in hopes that I discovered some awesome gems that had been overlooked. Sadly, I never saw this group, live. This would have been a great find.
