That Fling Thing - BBC documentary on Highland Dancing 

i'm a Scot and and was born in Scotland along with my mother and grandmother. i'm glad my mother let me roam the highlands as a kid. these mothers are a nightmare.

As a dancer, I want to study Highland dancing but only for the joy, creative expression, and connecting with my ancestors, not any competition. Where did the wild spirit of the stag go? I appreciate what the Elder Man dancer is saying. Wisdom.

I am also a Premier level dancer. My friends and I learned from the books because there were no teachers in our state at the time, something that doesn’t appear to be allowed these days if you want to compete. We held our own against dancers from other states as we moved up, and I did spend many hours each day training.

You can be supported, encouraged, work hard, strive to be the best at what you do and succeed without being yelled at and humiliated by an adult. Not all highland dance mothers and/or teachers are like that. Most are not.

That is unfortunately the reality of highland dancing. Been dancing since I was 3 and am now a dancing teacher, everything has to be absolutely perfect, otherwise you don't stand a chance.

I was a highland dancer in Nova Scotia Dome times it’s the dancing moms that are the competitive ones. Like hockey moms. They push the children so it’s not enjoyable. Every dancer wants to do their best. For ourselves!! Too bad the adults can’t let the children enjoy it and not push them for their own satisfaction

The elder Scot has it right. There's nothing wrong with competing, but it should be enjoyable as well. We're too obsessed with absolute perfection now-a-days.

Ive done highland dancing for 5 years and im now in premier but i did win alot and my first win was the all england championships in beginers

Unfortunately these type of mums were common when i danced in the 70s Bobby Watson was my dance teacher great to see him here. Just been to Dufftown Highland Games 2023 and watched the dancing all day glad to say very friendly but still competitive no dancing quite like Highland just love it 🎉

Awesome documentary! I used to do Irish dancing. Highland dancing looks harder than Irish dancing. Is it?
