We dedicate today's episode to Milo Winslow, trans activist in NE. He spoke at his city council to support fairness ordinance protecting the LGBTQ+ community and others from discrimination. It passed unanimously, but thousands of people petitioned and now it's on the ballet for November, which will not pass. Milo will be fiercely missed within the community; however, countless members of the LGBTQ+ community's still need help.
Please consider donating to the GoFundMe, but as allies, we must do more. We must support with our action. Countless other members of the LGBTQ+ community are fighting for their rights, and we must join them, not just with our words, but our actions.
Rest in Peace, Milo Winslow. You burned brightly and beautifully. We will do our best to honor your legacy and love as fiercely as you did everyday in action.

Tonight's guest is Stan Mitchell who founded GracePointe Church in 2003 with a group of individuals committed to realizing a unique Christian community in the greater-Nashville region. In its first decade of life, the community was a home for those going through faith transitions and those who didn’t feel comfortable in traditional church settings. In 2015, GracePointe underwent a highly publicized process wherein it stated, publicly and absolutely, that LGBTQ+ people were welcomed, celebrated, and included at all levels of GracePointe's community. National media picked up on this, and GracePointe experienced a seismic movement in its own community as it stepped away from a core belief of mainstream Evangelical Protestantism. In 2019 Stan stepped away from serving as head pastor of GracePointe to provide more direct pastoral care to the LGBTQ+ community.

What a wonderful discussion! It is very refreshing to be reminded that there are people who are more interested in meeting other people where they are at and trying to work towards common goals.

Hi Stan I'm Kim Grandma Kim 60 years old yeah it's been a long road I'm so glad I found you years ago, the Reformation that one sermon you gave was amazing .The one you gave at the Reformation was outstanding I feel the holy Spirit working in this I believe in a creator I believe Jesus was a wise prophet and that's how I come to grow but it took me studying years and years and years and then I was in bed with a back injury for eight years and I was wasting away on pills. And I had to really withdraw and it was like you know God said come out of the closet is this what you want to do to your grandchild and I'm married for 30 years but me and my husband are honest he's went along this with me and John delan of the Mormons the ex-mormons so many mixed orientation marriages yeah we're all injured I wrote a poem in 2001 and I'm going to post it but I have to write it up real neat but I believe this is the point for this moment Stan Mitchell God bless you I've been praying for you I know it's hard but if anybody's filled with Jesus Spirit you are and I know that and David p Gushie y'all need on the Show. Yeah Texas is tough born and raised still here I got kicked out too by the way when I was 17 and trying to come out didn't even know what it was but I knew from age 5 that I was transgender I never changed my sex but eventually I had to change my theology and I had to make it work my life depending on it and I've been successful in the last 10 or 15 years with the help of you all thank you God bless if there's a God. Or not still bless these people.

After 4 decades as a gay man in the Church being told God is outraged by me and hates me, I finally left the church 2 weeks ago. It is too late for my faith but I am glad Pastor Stan has a place for people who want to stay in the Church.

I wish more pastors were as logical, educated on the God debate and empathetic as Pastor Stan! He made some really good points on how most Christians will never believe that the Bible is not really God's word. They have been indoctrinated from birth to believe it is. So many former friends(Conservative Christians) of mine have abandoned me after they saw my Facebook page. Belief in the bible and Jesus is a part of their nature and being. It makes me feel so helpless sometimes in trying to convince them that I am not a bad person just bc I don't believe. But that is where we STILL are in our human/societal evolution. And what we will have to deal with for the rest of our lives. But by speaking out and educating people on the God debate, we can plant that seed and make it better for future generations.

Very wise words! Conversations like the ones this show is opening are so valuable and important. Like the hosts and you have said, by simply antagonizing one another (in both sides) we cannot ever talk and come to any conclusions. I love Street Epistemology for this reason as well.

Stan doesn't believe either the bible is God's authoritative word as well. He's theology is based of "God's word" and his own personal feelings. Stan doctrine compared to the 1st century apostles would be considered false teachings. Stan's teaching is false doctrine that does not save.

Thank you SO MUCH to Dave, Genevieve and all the awesome people who contribute with their time, effort and love to this show. It's incredibly valuable to have these conversations. May Milo's wonderful memory and legacy guide you to remember the beautiful man he was. And let's all work together to improve trans people's lives around the world.

I loved the analogy that Stan gave concerning people who are convinced the bible is the word of god because it says it is. The analogy is a person who says, "I am the smartest person in the world, and how do you know that that's true? Because the smartest person in the world just told you so!"

If the bible isn't God's authoritative word then how do determine right from wrong? Why are you right and they are wrong? What gives you the authority to say the bible isn't God's word. By what standard of measurement do you use?

Thank you for this conversation. I’d say so many of the Christians I still interact with are in Stan’s position. Gone away from hardline, fear based and legalistic church but still religious/Christian.

But progressive Christians won't speak out against the hardline, fear based and legalistic church, and when push comes to shove, still vote for the likes of Trump (wanna-be autocratic rulers wrapped in a cloak of religiosity) and hence religiously legalistic Supreme Courts and local city councils and judges - that's my worry!

Just a clarification: I understand what Pastor Stan means by naming all the "communist" countries he does at one point, however Cu ba and Ru ssia are one of, if not the most, religious countries there are, so to mention them as an example of non-religious countries is just simply false. The power and government in Russ ia is incredibly intertwined with the Christian Orthodox Church. And Cu ba is extremely Catholic as well. In fact, legislators haven't been approving marriage equality, and basic human rights for queer people, only citing their religious ideology.

Its ironic that other christians condemn you. All these call in atheist shows receive theists calls everyday with the most ridiculous reasons why to believe in god, and you are by far the best argument for a loving god that I know of. I am an atheist and is feel most all religions are toxic. This has caused me to look at the possibility that it can be used for good. So grateful you are there filling a need, as well as being a role model for all those other christians.

Stan mostly gets questions to him is he 100% sure there's no god before they can leave their faith. The answer to this is straightforward as to why it is a flawed way to think about things. He should tell those people it can be answered in many ways. 1. if there was a god just as many people believe in a different one, if you are wrong you go to hell, people invented 4000 of them so odds are you picked the wrong one better to not worship the false ones. 2. If there was any true god they would have made it very clear and left evidence (none exists). 3. You could use analogy, and say the same thing about anything are you 100% sure there's no lock ness monster or yeti? No? Does that mean you should pretend they are real until evidence may come? Nope. This covers pascal's wager flaws very well briandbuckley.com/2012/05/30/why-pascals-wager-doesnt-work/ Great show too bad about the audio issues at the start but important message here. You can change a sect of a religion to go against its source material however if you do this then it is the same to just ignore all of it and lets do better than slavery and genocide.

i don't believe in an afterlife but i can't get on board with "things are better/more cherished when they're finite." no matter how much i try and savor, i simply *will not* get to experience having a body in which i am fully comfortable, fully *myself,* because i was born in the 1990s and not the 2090s (or whenever morphological freedom actually becomes feasible). it's just so depressing that nobody with any credibility seems to think we should attempt to reach a future in which people don't die before they want to (heat death of the universe notwithstanding); either because they're theist and doing so is "playing god" or redundant with heaven; or because they're atheist and "dying lets us experience a bittersweet contrast to life" (except, unlike the part that comes after we finish a meal, we don't get to experience it, so... ???) also, the theory of mind (aka different people have different tastes) should be considered here. some people do not enjoy things the same way you do. i am not someone who enjoys things more when they are finite. just like everything else in existence, there is no one-size-fits-all for what makes things good or bad. it's opinion, so please don't and act like yours is universally true; it's obnoxious (and, as stated earlier, depressing).
@bevinjett9849
@bevinjett9849 2 года назад
I don't think when Dave offers an opinion he is saying it's universally true for everyone. His thought that things are more cherished when they are finite is akin to how we appreciate things more if it's not always guaranteed. Not sure why this is depressing when it's very much the reality we live in today, and everyday. If the idea of an afterlife is depressing I get that, but what would that afterlife really look like? If everything was "perfect" we wouldn't appreciate it very much after a while, in fact we would probably try to throw a wrench in there somewhere just to feel/experience something different for a change, lol. As for being depressed that you are not living in the future, that's assuming the future is more promising than today, and given a lot of today's environmental, technological, genetic engineering, etc. concerns, I am not totally sure that will be the case..
