Now, this is going to sound hilarious... but a Ephiphone Les Paul SL in the middle position. It’s kind of a weird guitar since it uses 2 single coil pickups (instead of a typical LP humbuckers) but that’s exactly why it works.

@@TorinoDays What string gauge do you recommend for midwest emo? Or should I just stick with the one I felt comfortable with?
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays 3 года назад
Thanks for your question! I think it makes sense to use thr strings you are comfortable with. As to me, I tried 10-48 and 11-52. Both are cool but there are some differences. 10-48 is good for tapping but power chords sounds a bit poor. 11-52 is great for power riffs, however, it's hard to me to play tapping since the strings are thicker. But anyway, I'd suggest you to buy different ones and play them all just to get which strings work for you. :)

definite vouch for the "don't worry about not having a telecaster" advice you've given. my jaguar gives me the tone i want compared to my telecaster (and don't get me wrong, i love my tele to death, but it sounds better distorted similarly to alt rock as opposed to the more overdriven tones that midwest emo utilizes). it depends by your personal preferences, from anything like pickups to scale length. this guide is really good, thank you for uploading it!

Just an FYI a normal Jazzmaster doesn't have humbuckers. They're a special single coil design that's a little more like a Gibson P90. Definately a bit thicker than normal Fender single coils but they have their own sound IMO, very consistent, maybe less dyamics but very clear and precise sound. I can see why they were originally designed for jazz. They're brilliant for postpunk because they can sound icy as hell even with loads of gain. I can see why they're popular for emo too.
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays 3 года назад
Yeah you’re totally right, it was my fail since I have played Jazzmaster HH and by the moment of the recording I was sure they all had HH’s. After I got Fender Jazz Tele I fell in love with Its singles.
@19peter96
@19peter96 3 года назад
@@TorinoDays No worries! I'd definately try Jazzmaster pups if you haven't yet as they're really something different. On paper you'd expect them to sound like P90s, basically just between single coils and HHs with none of the humbucking. But while they are thicker and a little hotter than most single coils they don't get 'hairy' or muddy like a P90 can. They're crystal clear clean with the advantage that they don't get shrill when overdriven. All that said i'll always be a single coil Tele guy at heart. Blows my mind that such a simple design is still like the most versatile guitar in the world. Tone for days.

Dumb question but does running it into the amp first make that much of a difference than just going directly into the interface?
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays Год назад
Oh, it's not a dumb question at all! There is a holy war about this topic. Some people think there is significant difference between "natural" analog sound and "plastic, dead" digital one. There are people believing that digital is a way better, has more quality. And the rest people think it's relatively the same in terms of sound. I was from the first camp, though now I believe all options are perfectly fine and you can create pretty similar (I'm not saying "the same") sound using both plugins and real amplifiers. For me, now plugins are more useful because I can create/mix music really fast with it, but knowledge of how the real amps work helps me a lot! Talking about using of physical amplifiers, it's more pleasant and atmospheric for me in terms of having fun, so I use sometimes just when I want to relax and play some music. But in music production people use both real amps and plugins.

How would I EQ my amp specifically for this? I run an old school, Peavey VTM 60 head, and my controls are Bass, Mids and High for the EQ. My volume is controlled by a Gain knob. Also, since it’s a tube head, would I even need a compression pedal?
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays 2 года назад
Hi! Actually you can use your bass, mid and high eq knobs for the eqing. As to compression, I’m not sure that the kind of your amp is related to the compression. It’s often recommended to use compression to control the sound before it moves to the amp.

What about when you need more distortion for a chorus or something? Pedal recommendation?
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays 3 года назад
Thanks for the question! There are at least four approaches depending on situation. For example, if it’s a live performance, you can use three options: 1. Amp switcher (if the amp allows switching sound variants). When you need more overdrive, you’ll just switch the option on the switcher to activate the overdriven settings of the amp. 2. Pedals with two overdrives (for example, JHS Double Barrel) that combines two pedals in one. 3. Two overdrive pedals. You’ll just turn on the second one for a chorus or smth. If you you need more overdrive while mixing, you can use plugins. For example, you have already recorded a song with pedals and you need to overdrive some piece. Then you can use one more overdrive via amp simulator here with automation in your DAW.

I broke the nut on my Strat and Im not sure if I should order a nut a fix it myself or pay for getting it done + properly intonated. Also the strat never can keep tuning. Is that better on Tele? Also I don't use pedals since I need to record in Logic anyway and there are so many effects there, except its hard to just start jamming with Logic. My goal is to get a job and earn money so I can afford pedals (incl Amp emulation pedal), Tele, mixer (I cant use an amp anyway), good headphones.
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays Год назад
Thank you for the reply. Humming may be caused by many reasons. Indeed, technically singles are more sensitive to electrical signals from appliances, for example, and it could affect seriously. I lived in a flat, where I always had these problems with the hum. Once I moved to another one the issue was gone. It’s not a recommendation, just sharing my experience.
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays Год назад
If we talk about Strat not keeping tuning, so it’s not a problem with the guitar model, it’s more related to your own instance, unfortunately. I had a Strat that has been tuned by luthier and it was perfectly fine in terms of tuning. I would say “no” answering your question “is that better on Tele?”. Both Tele and Strat may not keep the tuning and vice versa.
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays Год назад
If you break something on your guitar and don’t have experience with repairing it, so the cheapest and smartest way to solve the problem is to go to luthier, who will provide you professional help and will not destroy the instrument even more (from my personal experience).
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays Год назад
As for a single coil / humbucker. I would use (and I actually did) the humbucker, if I wanted to use more overdriven sound, more aggressive. Compared to single coil, it sounds more dense and powerful. But if you don’t need it, and your problem is only the humming sound, so maybe consider getting noiseless single coils on your Tele. Changing of coils to humbucker (even mini hums) will change your sound drastically. I would recommend to check some demos on the internet and then make a decision regarding such a change.

So I have money for one piece of gear what should I get? That’s not an amp or guitar with a 150$ budget to get that Midwest emo tone?
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays 2 года назад
Hey! Thank you for the question. I think if you want to get a cheap option, you can get only a guitar and use amp and pedals virtual simulator on your computer. You’ll get a good sound and you won’t need to buy gear. As for guitar, I’m not sure it’s possible to buy good brand new guitar, but you can try to find some Squier Telecaster that was used. I guess it’s a good option
@BURNANNATOR
@BURNANNATOR 2 года назад
@@TorinoDays @Torino Days hmm haven't thought about that recommend any software you recommend? Additionally, I sort of want to get physical gear as well I have a cheap amp and guitar already but I want something more physical some type of compressor, pedal, etc. Just the closest 1 piece of gear to start off into getting me closer to that midwest tone. I want to slowly start making some type of rig.
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays 2 года назад
@@BURNANNATOR I would recommend to get a compressor. It’s not a special midwest emo thing though it’s a basic guitar effect that helps controlling the sound dynamics. Also the compression pedal helps with sounding of tapping

Is there a special reason why you plug your guitar into an amp, then amp to interface, then interface to daw and use vst amps? Wouldn't you be able to plug your guitar into the interface di then use an amp vst or is there something I'm missing?
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays 3 года назад
Hi thanks for the question! I’m actually use only cab (not an amp) simulator and a real amp in the chain because I like how the real amp sounds, however, recently I’ve started using amp simulator instead of the real one once I got Amplitube plugin. This plugin contains hundreds of presets and simulators so it allows using more features and it’s more convenient on my opinion.

@@TorinoDays thanks for your reply! So you connect the headphone to the PC in your chain when you use the Amp Simulator, or to the Vox when you use that real amp, right? In my chain i have an ipad (into a focusrite dock station) with a tons of amp and Effects simulator... But i can't find a good solution about the audio output. The dockstain has both headphone and speakers output... So i'm thinking to use studio monitors, but i'm not really sure. What do you think about audio output with studio monitors if i use amp Simulator by ipad (or PC)? Thanks a lot for your help!
@TorinoDays
@TorinoDays 3 года назад
@@GianluigiLasco 1. I actually connect the headphones directly into my audio interface whether I use real amp or amp simulator. 2. That's quite controversial question regarding using studio monitors. Good monitors are pretty expensive and require acoustic treatment of the room where they will be placed. I will be honest - it's not easy. One more thing is even if the studio monitors are expensive and cool (in terms of studio monitoring) they may not provide you that massive guitar sound since the monitors' frequency ranges tend to straight line (though it's kind of impossible now) to prevent colouring the sound. Because of that guitars may sound "poor" or "flat". So, my advice is to start with some good headphones (monitors) with acceptable price for you. Yes, headphones monitors also tend to be "flat" in terms of frequencies ranges, however, they are cheaper than big ones and you would easily return them back if they didn't fit you. I like Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro. I record guitars and vocals through them. If you have other questions, please feel free to ask me!
