@John Matrix Dawkins moved to Oxfordshire when he was eight. David Mitchell went to Abingdon boarding school in Oxfordshire as a boy. Idk what you consider to be "from" but I'd say that qualifies. They have the same accent.
And yet, there is a small but loud contingent _right now_ that believes the Earth to be _flat._ People flew into conferences held in places like Denver and near Dallas, ALONG _GEODESICS,_ to attend these conferences. The Ancient Greeks (probably among others) did EXTREMELY SIMPLE testing that provided quite strong evidence as to the shape of the planet. When we look at other planets using what today are fairly basic lenses, they're clearly spheres. And yet, there walk among us 'neo-alchemists' still convinced that the best way to understand the universe is by taking whatever garbage your own brain tells you is or must be true - often based on some garbage generated in the brain of some other rando, of course - and clinging to that like grim death! It's quite impressive. It really harks back to the model that the Catholic Church used for years. Don't bother to "ask God" (i.e., do some tests and see what reality is actually like), assume you know better, effectively flip God off, and consider it a job well done that you've convinced other randos. Of course, this then lends more credence to your beliefs apparently, because after all, such a large group of people stuck in an 'idiot feedback loop' can't all be wrong, right? So, yes - "brilliantly stupid", and yet, all too real.
Zach Hixson It is, at the end of the day, only a slight modification of David Mitchell's usual accent. What with them both being posh academic chaps from Oxford.
I'm not academic but i sound like that and I'm from Oxford. also Mitchell went to Cambridge he is just FROM Oxfordshire and we sound part Pam Aires and part posh home counties. the farmer comes out in me when I'm drunk and the Dawkins when I'm on the phone haha
Emily Gilbey He grew up in Oxford and was privately educated at an Oxford school. Many people who went to Cambridge University don't talk like this. (Myself, for example.)
The "David Mitchell Does a Good Dawkins Impression Delusion". This is just standard David Mitchell making sure he gets his enunciation right. It's pretty much how he usually talks.
@@aidenhill17 yeah man. Obviously the tone and sound of the voice isn't right as he's not a vocal impressionist. But the language, cadence and annunciation is bang on.
I am AMAZED at the Dawkins impression. I'm like "how would you even do a Dawkins impression, he's just British and normal." Then Mitchell showed me the way.
It's the Christain La La Lander Delusion vs The Liberal La La Lander Delusion, with The Islamist and The Hindu Delusion taking over vast swathes of the UK as the two mental-case bunch of Western La La Landers show each other up for being fake, pretentious nutjobs on both sides... Bunch of Nazti twats, the lot of 'em.. Libs cause the most problems though... 'Liberal Immigration' mass-imported millions of religious authoritarians that bred like rats.
There're a lot of people in this comments section saying this is a great RD impression... is it just me, or is David Mitchell just talking how David Mitchell always talks, and all of the people saying it's such a great impression just can't distinguish between different English people?
No no he definetly watched a few RD clips and he copied some of the mannerisms, you are right in he doesnt actually imitate the voice but he does speaks as RD would in his own normal voice, using his pitch highs and lows whilst speaking normally, also some good mannerism copying seem to give of the illusion that the voices are the same.
@@dave8323 If you don't see the - admittedly rather subtle - changes Mitchell makes to his natural accent, that's not a reason to be disrespectful to others. The way he stresses the word "civilisation", for example, at 1:21(-ish) is clearly Dawkins and distinctly not Mitchell.
I routinely spend nights in graveyards photographing stars. While the camera is doing its stuff I'm usually on my back looking at the sky with binoculars. Graveyards tend to be isolated where I live, never illuminated and quiet which makes them useful to me. Cant say any of the residents have complained. No strange images from the camera etc.
there is a reason such shows don't exist: showing you two hours of "nothing's happening" and "well, this was a complete waste of time" would be boring. like, very, very boring.
RKBock That basically is the ghost hunting shows out there. It's an hour of people overreacting with dramatic editing but ending up with nothing much to show for it all. I used to find it entertaining because of that.
rottworks yeah... you didn't get what i meant... (no offense) the shows don't show you "nothing". they show you this overreaction and "supernatural things". yes, it is pointless and bull, but it is entertaining for some people. what i mean is, a show where they would go into a "haunted house" and simply not react to anything scientifically explainable, or in other words: not react to anything.
"Richard a lot of your readers would have gone with a crystal skulls book if your publishers had had the clout to get it closer to the tills". Lol. So true.
"Those guys aren't pussies... not like the Muslims!" Aha, fantastic joke. And I when I heard it I thought I hope Muslims understand and find jokes like that funny too. Because that's a classic bit of provocative satire with only good intentions :)
***** A little superfluous yeah, but you have to admit that humour like this is often taken the wrong way. Putting a little bit of emphasis in the comment section on the nonsense and irony of jokes like this might, just might help someone appreciate it in a different light.. Unnecessary yes, but unfortunately the risque comedy we love in this country can be misconstrued.
Oh bollocks! I have an old second hand receiver with a remote which came with some obscure brand batteries called "Robust - Extra heavy duty" and when it fails I usually just give a nudge or tap to the battery lock and lo and behold it works again! It also works if I roll the batteries. Now I can just imagine having instead Duracell batteries. Then the remote would work for millions of years. When the imminent Ragnarök Apocalypse will wipe the earth and the survivors will find those remotes with Duracell batteries they will still work. Or the sage of the tribe will impart his wisdom on the subject: "It has been told that the Ancient Ones rolled the batteries to give them more life. The rolling was as a sort of prayer and meditation towards the god of electricity which the Ancient Ones called Nikola Tesla."
@@AColonDashSix Actually, you did; there's even a name for the rhetorical trick of mentioning something by claiming you're not mentioning it - it's called 'apophasis'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apophasis
@@nemo6686 That doesn't actually apply since I never denied brining up the subject or denied my intention. It would be if I were to say "I wasn't going to comment at all but ... " However, if I deny doing something specific, you would have to point out that specific statement, a statement I didn't make.
@@AColonDashSix You commented on how good David's Dawkins was. There's not much else I can do to make it clearer. Your "that doesn't actually apply since..." is utter nonsense. The real mystery is why you bother to argue something so plain and of so little consequence.
I actually remember going to a Catholic group discussion thing (I was suckered in by free food xd ) and they had bought and were discussing the God Delusion . The dude next to me had all pencil notes and highlighted passages and the priest was attempting to explain something about infinite turtles proving that abortion was evil. Bit bonkers but nice people.
It's necessary to speak analogically, but atheists clearly don't take their own beliefs seriously. If it's all just random fluctuations of matter, just randomness, none of it matters and there's nothing to ground normative statements on. It also doesn't make sense that Dawkins treats religion as this random mind virus when it is clearly adaptive behavior. He could even get around his personal problems with it by treating it as a group level metaphor that centers the group, but he doesn't even consider this for some reason.
@@TheThreatenedSwan And we should be courteous to each other and analyze rationally instead of entrenching into our tribes. I apologize for mocking the infinite turtles analogy. (I am aware this is a youtube comment section and we are not supposed to be civilized or admit error, but I am genuinely reflecting that I shouldn't have been laughing at them)
@@TheThreatenedSwan I guess the opinion behind my original mockery was that fundamental truths about the world require tremendous effort, standing on the shoulders of giants to observe, hypothesize, research the reality of the world around us. Not playing word games and making abstract logical theories while talking about ancient literature.
"It's necessary to speak analogically, but atheists clearly don't take their own beliefs seriously." What beliefs? Atheism has no inherent beliefs.@@TheThreatenedSwan
Nazor no they're the same person mate. I mean have you ever seen them both together? I certainly have not! I think the reason they look different when acting out his different personas is a visual illusion.
Pretty sure that's just David Mitchell's normal voice and not an impression. Also other than mildly posh English I'm not sure it really is a good impression. Maybe we all sound the same to Americans
It's impressive that this show commented on the heart of the New Atheism movement, and why it merged so smoothly with the Alt-Right: ""That's not why it sells, Richard; people like the denying, the censensus smashing". And lo and behold, the denial of global warming, the moon landing, and even a round Earth (something too ridiculous even for 2010) have all taken an ideological stand beside the supposed rational thinkers.
"I've seen a ghost, that was weird. I don't believe in ghosts but I've definitely seen one, do you believe in ghosts?" "No." "Well there we go then, "The Ghost Delusion."" Lmfao brilliant
