He's not wearing a baseball cap with the name of his channel embroidered on it. He doesn't use a clickbait title. This video's thumbnail picture doesn't show him making an astounded face with the words "F*CKING AWESOME" in huge, bright letters. There's no music in this video. There are no opening credits. He doesn't thank his Patreon subscribers by name in a scrolling list at the end. He doesn't order us all to Like, Comment, and Subscribe. How can such a failure ever succeed? Surely everyone will hate this video!

The interesting thing about this is the chemistry behind it. Super Glue contains an acidic inhibitor. When it is exposed to the humidity in the air, the acid gets diluted and the glue cures. The alkaline Baking Soda both accelerates the curing (neutralizing the acidic inhibitor) and performs the same role as gravel does in concrete.

I used to work in a high-end violin repair shop, we're talking Stradivarius here. We used Hot Stuff (like crazy glue) to make hairline fractures disappear. Exact same process as this video but we used wood dust instead of baking soda. If the clients and buyers knew this they probably wouldn't be too pleased.

@@ohger1 I never saw Hot Stuff being used on a Strad, but one time while I was under a lot of stress I accidently made a hairline fracture on a tortoise shell frog (the piece that holds the hair) on a $20k cello bow. My teacher made it disappear under a microscope using the cyanoacrylate glue. I learned the technique myself and used it on numerous bows of varying value (I mainly worked on bows). And I witnessed it being used on various violins/violas/cello/bass that I don't know the value of. Maybe if they used some high tech equipment it could be discovered, but you couldn't see the repair under a microscope. This was close to 3 decades ago, btw. I quit the job because the owner sexually assaulted me, despite the fact I was being groomed to take over the business and promised to be sent to Italy to learn violin making. I'd probably own the business today if I never left. I stopped in to visit about 10 years ago and there were two Strads worth $5M each sitting in a violin cabinet in the showcase room with low security, lol.

I have used this method to repair the inside door pulls on my 2007 GMC van. These internal parts are large plastic pieces, maybe 14, long that had broken into 5 pieces. First I glued them as usual with super glue, then I built up layers of superglue and baking soda. I think there was 11 to 13 inches of crack line that needed repair. Also a couple of cracked out holes that I rebuilt and reshaped. It has been well over a year and both doors are still holding up.

I learned about this working in R&D at Hasbro around '89. Later, a friend and collegue improved on it by putting the baking soda in a squeeze bottle with a tapered nozzle. You can kind of squirt a powder/air mixture out almost like liquid. Makes it easy to apply the powder where you want it to go, which is the part I always found difficult.

Great detail. You might want to mention that it's not advisable to use it on the body. I split a nail a while ago and tried to glue the split together with a few applications of the glue only, but it wouldn't last longer than a few minutes. So without thinking I covered the whole nail with the super glue and then applied a thick covering of baking soda. Bad idea.😱 The chemical reaction of course gives off a ton of heat. I think the neighbors heard me screaming. The heat only lasted a few minutes and I was able to file the baking soda down nice and smooth. Thanks for sharing. Cheers

This is a classic that personally I have used for years and there is something I would like to warn you about. If you use steel/iron pins in your model an this mixture contacts the metal it will cause it to rust and swell a tiny bit. The color is an obvious stain on the model and there are sometimes stress cracks at the joint from the expansion. Usually both can be covered up by a dot of pain, but on something larger that may not be an easy fix. The soda adsorbs any moisture it encounters that's why we use the Sniff 'n Hammer in the refrigerator. If you live in a place with low humidity this may not even be an issue, but I live in a cave at the bottom of Titicaca. I love that name.

CA glue needs what is referred to as a "kicker" to bond Some thing like wood have a built in "kicker." With some other things you need to add one. Baking soda is one of the best "kickers" and it also can fill gaps With baking soda you can even make a spray kicker by mixing it with some water.

But wood absorbs the CA glue, which is a problem.
@Barb5001
@Barb5001 2 года назад
@@princeofcupspoc9073 Wong..... it is not a problem. It Is the very fact the wood absorbs CA is what make it a great instant wood glue. Fact is this is how any glue works... by something absorbing the glue as it hardens. Glue just staying on the surface bonds nothing; This is why you can not glue something like glass as it does not absorb glue and you need something other than "glue" to fasten glass to glass. Aquarium glass is bonded with a special silicone..... How does silicone bond glass? " Silicone is a polymer mainly composed of silicon and oxygen. Glass is mostly silicon dioxide, so if the silicone is in contact with glass as it cures, it can form a very strong bond "

I've used baking soda and cyanoacrylate for a few things and I like it. It instantly turns into something like tooth enamel. But now I have another favorite that I used on my glasses when the plastic frame broke. The lens has the frame stretched a bit and its too hard to use cyanoacrylate there. I got some UV cure adhesive that comes with a tiny UV light that cures it in 5 seconds. It works great. I pinched the broken ends together as tight as I could and pressed the light button. Good as new!
@mherrmann81687

Those UV glues don't always work... I have had them not cure properly (and only work on surfaces where the you can completely expose it to the UV light); and even when they have cured, I have had it just peel away from many surfaces.

CA glue used by my son for gluing his tires on his Radio controlled cars which he has been doing for over 15 years, is the best superglue I have ever tried. It works like you think superglue should work. The name of it is CA glue.. I had a collision with a deer on my motorcycle that has a full plastic faring. I had to buy a used large side panel/fairing because they were not available new.. The one I bought from a salvage yard, the idiot that removed it from a motorcycle in the salvage yard didn’t unscrew all the tab screws, they cut them off with a saw. I did not see this when I had the panel repainted the stock color which cost me $400 for the part and for the paint job. When I went to install it, there were no tabs… so I removed the tabs from the broken faring by cutting them off the old faring ..I was trying superglue, and it just did not hold. Not even close. My son stopped over and suggested CA glue which I never heard of..He gave me his tube that he’s been using to glue his tires to the wheels to keep them from spinning on the rims. My son is/was ranked as one of the top 100 RC car racers in the country.. he told me to be sure of my exact position for each tab because I’ll have to cut it back off to reposition it. He was right. That motorcycle, a Honda Pacific coast, 1994, that I had for 26 years mostly as a commuter, had that panel with the reglued tabs on for an additional eight years without a single glued tab failing, in spite of the fact that they were not cut with a precision laser when the salvage yard cut them off, and when I cut them off the old faring to install them on the replacement faring. You put it on, and within 10 seconds it is done. I don’t know how it would work with baking soda, I have used the old baking soda and watery superglue a couple times for making repairs on plastic items that needed to be reshaped afterwards which was fine. But super glue is not even in the same category as CA glue For a regular repairs of plastics
@bripslag
@bripslag 2 года назад
Superglue is just a brand name of CA glue. The 'CA' in CA glue is cyanoacrylate. All of the superglue/Crazy Glue and similar brand name products are simply CA glue. How well each brand performs is a factor of how old it is and how it is stored. "CA Glue' is not a brand name. Similarly, you wouldn't say motor oil is much better than Pennzoil.
