So many comments forgetting spencer said, "The interactions in the video were funny, but y'all weren't." Yeah the video is hilarious, even more so with this context from Spencer.
When I was watching the video I remember thinking,,, really? That's their number one pick??? Fossils?? Like having themes at all immediately dampers the creativity of quiplash WHICH IS ALREADY STRESSFUL but like.... F O S S I L S god I love these people it's like a slapstick clown routine
@@AuntieLux "fossils" and "underwater" sound like themes for a nerdy kid's awesome birthday party, not a theme for an already structured improv game with prompts. There's also other games in jackbox where you can make unique prompts for others to answer, so why they decided to do this with quiplash is beyond me
@@blakewhite3131 it was soooo bad, I mean it did circle back to being good but also they're a team of excellent improvisers and actors it should have been better!! I wish they would throw in a crazy factor like a drinking game or loser has to do a forfeit to compensate for games like this where there burnt out and don't have great ideas....
It's funny how much Spencer nailed the exact problems with the video. Knowing that production (and Damien lmao) are self-aware about the issues for this video makes it better I guess.
@@Beefnhammer He went from editor to director of Smosh Games, so I assume he was given a raise. He really is in the position to be like "yeah that video kinda sucked" because a lot of the responsibility falls on him
@@rasengdori13 yup, plus it goes to increase their respectability. If they themselves can acknowledge "yeah that video was bad" and then tear it apart then they kmow they can improve later on. This isn't the first time they acknowledged a bad video but this was the first time, I think, one of their game videos was bad because nothing was working that video.
SAME it became one of my favorite videos bc im a sucker for stuff being so bad it gets funny, like u could see they were trying so hard to save it even tho the video already started w the wrong foot (aka angela not being able to get the intro right) it was too good
You know things are bad when Alex Tran, who has been a very welcome addition to the Smosh Games crew, tells five funny and talented Smosh cast members that they should do a Walmart theme for a round of Quiplash. Like…what 😅😂
Some people forget that Spencer is more than just Smosh's resident memelord. He worked his way up to Director of Smosh Games being an editor for many years, he has seen a lot of Smosh videos during post production and knows what quality of videos should be at, to be good enough for uploading.
@imyour-realdad as soon as Spencer mentioned it, I knew the video because yeah. It wasn't as good as their other videos at the time but I watched it all because you could see they were TRYING to salvage the vibes 😂😂
Themes can be limiting, but this video shows half of that was off rails since not everyone actually committed to it, and also they didn't really choose good enough topics to focus on
I agree with Spencer, the video actually becomes really funny watching with the meta knowledge of how unfunny it is. I had fun but then again I enjoy awkward humor.
I was 100% with Damien the whole time: Quiplash is fine as is. It's not super exciting, it's not super dull, it is a nice fun game. Play the game, you will find a way to have fun.
As soon as Spencer mentioned the video, we all KNEW the one he was talking about 😂 it didnt help that every video had been amazing for a while which also made it look worse in comparison lol
One of the many reasons why Trevor breaking the old couch was such a blessing in disguise. Unless you straight-up can't get enough friends together, Jackbox with five people is kinda whack. Depending on the game, at least. Job Job will never not be funny to me.
Yeah Job Job IMO is more funny bc you generate all the content yourself. Like the prompts are very open, and once you create the words (doing it intentionally funny for the words people get helps) the player that receives them has a lot to work with. Quiplash like puts you in panic mode bc the time limit is strict, the prompts are overly specific and fill-in-the-blank which is a bad combo for anyone who doesn't understand the prompt, and the game punishes you visually with the animations for telling even okay jokes if the other person's is better. Job Job gives a rainbow to the more popular answer and is collaborative in making the jokes themselves, far less abrasive in comparison. So the objective becomes beat the other person's joke instead of make a funny one yourself in Quiplash whereas that doesn't happen in Job Job. Tee KO is another example of a game that does the collaborative part well. Overall, game design diff sorry for the paragraph this stuff just made me realize why Quiplash has always been lukewarm humor to me as I got older
Honestly I respect Damien being annoyed about the themes the entire time 😂 it’s one of those ideas that sounds fun at first but then you realize doesn’t work, but everyone decided to double down instead. I think that dynamic made it funnier in a way.
He's not wrong to be honest, it was a pretty mid video. But to be fair, Quiplash is a hard game. Your brain really needs to be firing on all cylinders to give consistently funny answers.
@@mosquitopyjamas9048They've made a lot of filthy jokes in previous Quiplash games. It was just a bad day, chemistry wasn't working, it happens once in a while.
Spenser is underestimating the pure hilarity of them getting increasingly sardonic about the themes idea, the themes getting more and more stupid out of complete spite. They kept getting angrier and angrier about how bad the themes idea was and by the time we were at Underwater, I was rolling. Approaching Staring Contest stream levels of humor.
i need more smosh tea from spencer (and courtney) specifically, they both arent hesistant to say their own opinions (that needs to be said) and i luv it for them.
Spencer nailed sm w his commentary on this video lol I rlly like it bc u can see how they totally went off the rails like CRAZY trying to make the video fun, and their interactions bc of this rlly saved it for me, honestly one of my fav videos to me 😭
Not that these 5 people aren't hilarious cause they are but from personal experience any jackbox game with less than 6 people is usually a bust especially quiplash
we got last shoot on a friday energy but needed warmed up-midday on a monday energy 💀 i remember feeling very… underwhelmed by this video. however i’m always happy to see the way the cast interacts with each other no matter the content!
When I play Quiplash, it's hard enough to think of ANY funny answer within the time frame, let alone one in theme. I wish they'd play again just normally, their other ones are funny!
That was probably one of the more funny moments to me just bc you can tell Alex is trying to save it without realizing Damien was serious and Damien is just completely caught off guard by Walmart but just goes with it
The crew should just do their job and be quiet you're not the entertainment so be quiet if Damian says an idea you shouldn't throw something on top of it especially considering it's not your job person with the mop I'm not saying that the person with the mop is the one who spoke up but you know what I mean
This is such an excellent edit! I remember watching the quiplash video and being like hmmm the themes are clearly holding them back but at least they’re being funny with each other. And then the Smosh mouth episode with Spencer where he gave constructive criticism on the video came out and I’m like yes exactly! This is why you’re leading Smosh Games!
Frankly, i just find Quiplash to be a rather unfunny game. As Spencer says, they were still being funny around the game but the game itself fell flat and i think thats more due to the game itself and the kind of humour it encourages people to default to. Cause we know for a fact that Amanda and Chanse, at least, can be extremely funny, often wothout trying too hard.
Quiplash is extremely reliant on fast thinking and one liners, which is kinda hard. But… the game constantly corners you into using disgusting or sex jokes, which can work (see Funhaus) but when we have a channel like smosh, more reliant in characters and playing off each other, I think it falls flat. (And quiplash can be lame)
Honestly? I've never understood the appeal of Quiplash videos. I've enjoyed STREAMS where people have played it where there's back and forth with the audience/chat and inside jokes get built. But an edited video? They've never done it for me. x
Quiplash is literally just prompts for jokes. They couldn't think of any funny jokes. Y'all really be working overtime to find any reason besides they just weren't feeling it that day.
@@Toastybeesjokes work best when the person telling them comes up with it themselves. Getting a prompt and trying to tell a joke isn’t likely to work as well as an original joke will. The main appeal of many jokes is the shock factor, you can’t really have that when you are given a half made joke that you are expected to finish.
I think part of the problem is that all the answers needed to be part of a theme. Like themed quiplashes are good and fun, but the prompts have to fit the theme I could tell Angela was really wanting to make the game more fun, but as it went on she could tell she was losing the room
Quiplash is only good with an audience that is voting. Typically that would be stream chat, but if they were able to get ~10 cast/crew as audience, the vibe becomes different.
liked this video bc it went so horribly lol one of the top rzns to watch smosh is because of the chemistry between people, and that's what makes videos where things go wrong so funny
I loved Chance in this video (and every video). He seems so cool and then all of a sudden turns into an ANGRY PARENT when people dont follow the rules... his inner Chosen coming out 😂
9:39 at this point Alex the director knew that it's been dry thats why he said walmart cuz its an easy theme to be funny. He seems rude in the final cut but he was actually trying to make the video funnier
i think the thing that made this episode so funny to me *was* how terrible it was, like the jokes were so bad sometimes they circled back around to being funny again somehow
Hearing him talk about this vid on that Smosh Mouth made me CACKLE bc I immediately remembered the exact vid. I didn't even finish it bc the themes were ruining it so much for me. After the Spencer roast round was all one ball jokes my leash was short and I dipped after fossils were chosen lmao "IDENTIFY FISH 😑" was a banger tho ngl
Idk guys it’s not that bad. Spencer didn’t even say the video is bad, he literally said the opposite. Regardless, they can’t all be shortfire gempacked masterpieces. The game is whatever, that was the problem. They’re clearly aware of how they’re struggling with it there, which to me is more entertaining than the game really anyway. Y’all are saying it was their energy that was off, which is just bs😄 There are many clips of their overall interactions from this one popping up. They just clearly didn’t enjoy playing that one that day and that’s why the game was below the bar. That’s it. It’s not like they aren’t having fun with each other regardless. Also, ”Morther of Ian” is still objectively incredible phrasing. It always comes back to me whenever Ian’s mom is mentioned.
Memeability is great because it's helping Smosh get discovered by new people BUT if the original video isn't fun based on its premise, then their views are going to remain stagnant and the video is going to die in their archive. People are only watching clips of Quiplash. For comparison, Darts has a crazy amount of clips and compilations, but the original video premise was really successfully executed so people are actually rewatching that video and extending how long it's staying relevant.
its people choosing to having fun , which can be contagious sometimes. the problem isnt that the video isn’t funny per se, its being subpar, compared to the channel’s standards. and personally, I agree with Shayne’s opinion, Quiplash is not a very good comedic improv game overall anyway.
the funniest thing was them getting more and more frustrated with how bad the game was going as the video progressed. and Chanse calling out Angela about her checking her phone lmao
Spencer was so right for this. Who needs a theme for quiplash answers? is this a children's party? a low-budget low-effort prom? "underwater" like forreal
What's funny about how this retrospective video is edited is you can tell they were all kind of at their wit's end (Alex included!) Putting these five together for a game of Quiplash seemed like such a great idea (they're all hilarious in the Cards Against Humanity videos!), but shooting this video at 6:00 PM was not. Maybe they got behind on stuff and that's why they couldn't film this earlier..? I guess we'll never know 🤷🏼♂️👀
i love how you can kinda tell how over it they all are. damien and chanse especially have quite obviously realised this game is drying and want to be literally anywhere else lol
that video is one of my favorite from Smosh because all interactions are so funny, and it looks like they are having great time and bad themes and answers only make everything funnier lol
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't like Quiplash. I still watch because they're hilarious people but most of the Jackbox games bore me to tears.
The games themselves are almost completely empty shells designed for people to insert their own humor. If you're bored by them it's because the people you are watching aren't funny. Or they were having an off day. Or they don't have humor that translates well to a structured environment.
The drawing games on Jackbox are the only games that are funny for Smosh. Smosh can be funny playing the others (liek the stand up comedian one, Quiplash, etc) but the drawing games are when the game itself, the answers, and the Smosh element all work together.
honestly it's so bad/awkward that it becomes good to me, it feels almost self aware, yet isn't, if it came out later that it was made awkward on purpose as a prank, I'd believe it, cause it nails the awkward humor/comedy aspect, kinda like whenever Angela says something so unfunny that she stops herself and goes "why did I say that", it's always funny to me
Jack box games are a more personal close friend group type of game because they can say stuff that we don't know about but they do and will be hilarious to them but then that makes horrible content because we at home are all lost. At best maybe you do it with streams but i think there is enough out there and they create enough games to not need jack box stuff
The fact it made it past the editors was the real failure of that video. They could have reshot it after Damien pointed out the mistake of adding a theme to random prompts for jokes.
Considering it was filmed at 6 in the evening, doubt anyone wanted to stay and reshoot. It was likely a scrap it or try to save it in post kind of video. It did well enough numbers wise so they made the right choice. Sometimes you gotta put out a filler to keep the schedule.
in a weird, ironic way, the worse the themes got, the better the answers were. the forced answers for underwater and fossils and the self-awareness of how bad those prompts were at the time actually elevated those themes over the rest also, I'm of the opinion that quiplash is only funny when played with people who aren't funny or expected to be funny. the pressure for everything to be a great joke just ruins the game and it really excells when theres someone openly unfunny saying dumb unassuming stuff that turns into running jokes across the rest of the game
I feel like with certain Jackbox games like Quiplash you have to be a good in a certain mood to play. I say that, but I still enjoyed the video and thought it was hilarious. Idk the bad themes helped add to the madness. I totally understand Spencer’s criticism and I like to hear the behind the scenes stuff.
Good editing on Katie. Everyone is right on themes making the game harder...but even those themes were lame. Hey, bad shoots will happen. I always admire their earnest attepts, but bad is bad. Side question: recognizing how difficult shooting schedules must be...couldn't they have bailed on this particular shoot and redo it with a five-minute chat on what wasn't working and try again? Quiplash can be hard but they've made it work before.
I feel like what a lot of people miss about Quiplash is that it’s inherently a party game, which sounds stupid to qualify. The game will always be at its best when a get-together with friends is winding down, people are comfortable with one another, and they have the last 3-4 hours of inside jokes and camaraderie- and just enough delirium- that after awhile it becomes hard to be unfunny. Going in know it’s a filmed and edited production is such a massive handicap that I get why it would be hard to make good jokes.
All of this! It's why it kinda works for streamers more because the audience feeds in to that days inside jokes. It can work on RU-vid if you hit some gold or everyone playing are in a silly mode. Because you can laugh with them even if you don't get the joke. But it's not a game you can just crunch out food videos with on demand.
