Thanks for including such a detailed timeline in the description. When researching specific topics/pedals that you have multiple episodes on, it's a real time saver. Thanks again!
Always a pleasure watching you guys. Such top quality production and banter! Always feels chilled out and nice, no pretentious bullshit. Cheers! P.s. New t-shirt idea; "Have a Schwang ;)" The "Dan into Mick" drive into the empress sounds fucking epic! Made the strat sound massive
love it when you guys use the el capistan ,it's my favourite pedal on my board and maybe only use it 5 times throughout the gig. great seeing you dial in sounds I never get to use 🙌
Nice comparison. The T-Rex was my 2nd choice. It really is a beautiful device. My first choice was MXR Echoplex Delay by Dunlop, together with the preamp and the Tap Tempo. They have captured the EP-3. Just gorgeous . I'm going to again ask that you guys check out Blackstone Appliance's MOSFET Overdrive. You'll thank me later.
Ive been subscribed to this show for little over a year now. Not this channels, but back when they were on ThhGigRig channel. I still love this show, and keep on crackin guys!
Fun seeing two of my favorite pedals on the show (Sick As and Faux Tape Echo)! Eerie... like looking at my own board haha. The Bondi has a second gain stage too. One has more headroom than the other, which gives you the ability to really sculpt your tone. Not to mention... TWO tone knobs!
You guys are so inspiring to listen to when you are playing, especially though when playing through these wonderful delays! The El Capistan is one of the best purchases I've ever made!
was ready to pull the trigger on the Strymon, but loving the controls and sound of the Empress. decisions, decisions.... great job as always guys! you make looking forward to Fridays!
Strymon's not entirely intuitive--you have to memorize the settings to some extent--but the sounds it makes are just nuts. The reverb on the delay is something I never knew I needed, but use all the time.
Not sure if it helps anyone, but T-Rex have a new replacement tape cassette out. They are a real improvement on the old ones. Many of the 'issues' reported in forums have been addressed by this upgrade.
funny to see you experience the comparison between the Replicator and the simulation pedals. i had the same fun when i compared it to the EP 103 pedal both sound great, and once you are playing at volume the noise of the T-Rex is irrelevant. the new tape design has helped with the set up. but i had a older version tape in for many months with regular use and it is super reliable.
Man I'm in love with that T Rex Replicator! And I'm so envious you guys have the coolest job! Demo-ing gear 👍 You guys are having a blast diggin' on the Gilmour Shine On and Mr Sandman spacey Radiohead sound 🎼💜🎶🎵☯️
So many thanks for your show. I know a lot of people say out, but I want to add my thanks as well. While not specifically pedals, one show I'd love to see is one on using multiple amps, specifically pairing them. Fender + Vox or Fender + Marshall or Vox + Marshall or Fender + Fender etc... What needs to be considered in pairing the amps?
Just got to the part about you guys getting a space echo, can't wait!!! I've got an RE-150 which is just the 201 without the reverb. Magnificent sounding thing!
We talk about germanium fuzzes all the time, but what about germanium drives like the Hudson Broadcast and the Telenordia/Tortenmann TA-100. I think that would make a good show
+Morten Pedersen Yes, good idea. Mick here - I used to hate that transistor drive sound (ie, a bit harsh, aggressive), but recently I've started understanding them a bit more. There's a show in here.....
I was thrilled to see the T-Rex in a tape comparison- What a sound!!! I'm a little iffy on the hiss though. I know it's part of the magic, but in a recording setting, or even live, I question if the hiss could be an issue? What are your thoughts on this?
That was great! Every pedal except the Tape Machine really impressed, with the Replicator just having something magical going on. Not that it exactly fits, but you've got to get one of Diamond's delays happening in a video. Maybe the Counterpoint with its faux tape mode...
You can't go wrong with the Strymon, Wampler or Empress pedals. The Replicator is very cool, but it's a commitment of space, money, and a bit of time maintaining it. You also have to be happy with all the noise it makes, how dirty the repeats are, and how it colours your entire sound. The Tape Machine isn't really a tape emulator.
As always, awesome show. I look forward to Friday's cuz of your show! Dan, you need to bust out that Gretsch more than you do. Just got a proline Japanese Gretsch and it's honestly one of the best guitars I've ever played. Love that anni!
Hey Mick, if you're looking for a delay pedal, check out what Catalinbread did with the upcoming Belle Epoch Deluxe. I think it might be the closest to getting the EP3 sound in a pedal.
+Mike Taffet I think I'm going to get a tape delay. Every part of me is telling me that it's total madness. But every pedal is //so// far away from it, it sort of feels inevitable. The same way I feel about valve amps and modelling. Not even close. Bah. Thanks for watching!
'But every pedal is //so// far away from it'? Really? Odd that someone like Eric Johnson swapped out his Echoplex for a Belle Epoch, and even says there are things about it he prefers.
+George O'Donoghue Sat in that room none of the pedals get close. Which isn't to say the tape is better, it's just to say the pedals all sound palpably different from the tape. I've stood on stage while he was playing (Mick here) with his proper rig and I can see why a pedal might work in that environment. It's so bloody loud I'm amazed he can hear anything! I suspect he'd tell you that it doesn't sound the same either.... which doesn't necessarily mean worse. Cheers!
+Mike Taffet Yeah, me too. I just don't know if I can justify the cost/hassle ratio. For those few minutes of bliss it's worth it. For the extra space in the car, stressing about tape, forgetting my words, playing Em instead of Bm because I'm worried about the tape...... ;0)
My one burning question (for today anyway) HOW do you do the highlight lighting for the pedal that is in use, that seems to coincide with the GigRig switcher?? When I first started watching, I thought it was something you did in post/editing. But after a few shows in and i was thinking that it's an actual light above the pedal board. hence the lighted hand when you reach in to tweak knobs. I am just curious on what the heck that is and how it works. i think that it is VERY important that your viewers know which pedal (s) are being used while you are playing through them. Sometimes it is not that apparent which pedal (s) we are hearing. I LOVE the show. Not only helpful and informative, but entertaining and fun as well. I am 3 TPS demo'd pedals up at this point. Keep up there great work guys. Very helpful
N2F1 I'm pretty sure they do it in post. I think I recall in a former video that Mick sarcastically said their editor was going to have a good time highlighting the pedals because they were switching quickly.
I don't have any actual expertise in NLEs, but it looks like they apply a neutral density mask over everything but the pedal in question. One would only have to create a single mask for each pedal and apply it as they switch. It would be simple in Photoshop or GIMP. You could probably also do the reverse where you tell the editing program to dim everything but what is masked and that would make it easier to do combinations of pedals. I remember once Mick having a bit of a fit over Dan nudging a pedal and how it would make it difficult for the overhead shot.
I wonder what the replicator would sound like with ep booster. Something in it doesn't work for me completely. At first the repeats sounded nice but at the end it felt somehow messy.
+Jacob Weile It was much less insane than we thought it'd be.... making the case for multiple delays on the board stronger than ever... Thanks for watching!
Great show as always guys ......... any chance of doing something with the BSM treble booster range made by Bernd Meiser in Germany. His pedals are designed to replicate the sound of some famous players .... Blackmore, May, Gallagher etc. So many choices so little cash lol ..... Keep up the good work
I like the wampler the best, I don't want presets or secondary function palava. PT-2399 delays are sort of between analog and DSP delays, very tape like.
I wonder how much the 24v power affects the tone of the Replicator? Catalin Bread's new Deluxe Epoch has a charge pump for that reason. I wish you guys could compare that with the standard Belle Epoch and an EP-3. The other delays sounded great, but the volume, clarity and headroom sounded like the difference between a bedroom amp and a full stack!
+justin salmons it all depends on the way it's been designed. 24v may be needed to power the motors etc but then other parts of the circuit may be regulated down to 5v. The voltage itself makes no tonal difference
That Pedal Show that's kinda what I was wondering. The T Rex seemed to have a lot more headroom and clarity. Drive pedals that run at 18v usually sound more open and have more headroom. Also you Electric Mistress and CE-1 operate at higher voltages and always seem more open than the 9v pedals. I'm sure Howard at Catalinbread wouldn't up the charge to 22v on the Deluxe just because. Tonally, i agree though. I'm curious if there's a unique preamp design in the T Rex. It just sounds amazing!!! Thanks for responding. You guys are ace. I'm totally addicted to your channel.
i just realized.. even after years the first thing i think if i see Mick (with that guitar). is "oh my god.. that Strat looks so sweet" same with Dan's Tele so i have to ask.. can you give me a picture that i can use to make a wallpaper for my self just with those two beauty's.,.. i know that's a wierd request but they remember me why i go to work ^^ and the end was kinda awesome
You guys should check out Petty John Electronics! I think you'd be impressed with their drives. Amazing! And no I don't own stock in them haha. They're just really good gear :). Also some vid ideas: Baritone vid Amp combos vs head and cab counterparts. An in depth discussion of pickup types and history Just some thoughts! Really love the vids you guys do! Keep up the awesome work :) 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Thanks guys, a very timely review for me as this will be my next purchase... Very interested to hear you'll be looking at an old space echo, will you be comparing it to the digital re-issue?
Hey guys love the show! I was thinking of getting my first real tape echo and I'm stuck between the Replicator an old EP3 and the SS tape echo I know they are all tape delays but I'm not sure how they differ any advice would be much appreciated! (:
Would you guys ever consider a tape echo vs analog delay ep? I've always been very unclear on the actual differences between the two, you mention it a little here but some live comparisons would be fantastic! (Great work as always at running my wallet dry by the way guys ;) )
Hello. I have not been able to activate automatic subtitles in the last show. Is there any special reason or is a youtube thing? It´s a great help for non-good speaker English. Thanks and cheers
Mick I'm in a similar boat right now trying to find my delay. I'm curious to hear what you pick. I feel drawn towards the wampler... then I hear the empress or el cap and I go cross-eyed and drool goes down my face.
+Daniel Dumas I went with the Empress Daniel. A mixture of how it sounds and simplicity of use. It's working well - I particularly like the high pass option. Cheers!
37:35 "Do you hear that difference?' Yeah, it's called having the dual heads on the Replicator with a lot of feedback vs single head on the Empress with little feedback, of course it's going to sound bigger and more impressive.
+dan abnormal I'll try and do it here - Mick here. Dan and I both like vintage-y amps, run fairly high headroom/clean, maybe just a little bit of break up. That means there's little or no distortion after your delays and verbs (though that can be a great sound too!) Using pedals for gain means than your OD and dist is before the delay and verb, so they stay relatively clean sounding. We also like high quality stompboxes, usually with good analogue dry through.... and also using a high quality loop switcher means that signal integrity is maximised at every point, even if we're using old stuff that doesn't have good bypass etc. Now, if you're using much gain in the front of the amp, putting your delays and verbs in the loop can make more sense in terms of them sounding cleaner. However it's worth saying that not all loops are created equal. Some are awesome, some suck, to be totally reductive about it. And of course, most of the amps we love don't have loops at all. Loops make much sense in certain situations. But for what we do, not so much. Hope that helps!
That Pedal Show Cheers Mick. That clears it up perfectly. I run the hotrod deluxe clean or on the edge too. Never bothered with the loop out of laziness really. Just thought about it every now and then and wondered was I missing out on something.
Chaps, can you offer any advise to silence my Wampler? It is so noisy, I have tried running it on batteries, even via a wall wart, and it is still the noisiest thing on my board - is it likely the pedal itself is faulty? Ta!
Thanks for the reply - it is far louder than just low level hiss, far louder than any other pedal on my board, or even when I remove it from the board and play it on its own. It has such a lovely tone, so is a bit of a shame. I will keep looking for an answer, or just bombard Mick with messages until he replies :D
I appreciate you guys including something like the Tone City tape machine in this video. After all, if I spend everything on a tape delay, there will be nothing left for a Keeley D & M drive. ;-)
I have been hoping for a Replicator episode! I got one last year and it is quite magical. I found out from T. Rex that the Replicator actually flips the phase of your dry signal when the pedal is engaged so that's worth noting when running a dry/wet rig. Thanks for another great video, guys!
You owe me a new computer screen. Mine now has orange juice all over it. Then I heard the part at 44:24 for ten seconds, and now there's orange juice in my keyboard. As always, Dan and Mick, thank you so much for the content. Best channel on RU-vid.
Richard Huckle haha, it's probably a $25 Joyo delay circuit shoved in there. I remember when Behringer had a "tube" preamp with LEDs lighting up the tube.
That Pedal Show those that remember tapes, will realise that as time went by the quality of playback became variable. I can't imagine that any company would invent a £600 pedal that would present a consistency problem for users. Still a very good pedal though.
Great show guys, would love to see you demo's of the oil can delay. I hear great clips of the Catalinbread Adineko & Old Blood Noise Endeavours Black Fountain. I'm sure these pedals would be "interesting".......
Even if the Replicator isn't the best sounding tape echo ever made, it's still night and day between it and any of the emulators. There's an unpredictability and something beautifully organic that no DSP can clone. That said, the Wampler sounds great.
That vintage Echoplex you played was sick... but this Replicator sounds great too. These tape units sound so clear, beautiful and natural... no matter how good the other pedals are there seems to be that synthetic... artificial... resonance...even small. It just makes a difference. I think you have ruined me for any tape delay that isn't actual tape!
I bought the Empress but have gone back to my 80’s Ibanez AD-9. Here’s why: 1) clock noise, you can hear the Empress ticking; 2) you can’t run it on batteries; 3) it has a good preamp but it’s still running your dry signal through it.
Sorry guys ... there was a bit of a delay getting around to watching this! gone are the days when you could tape an episode of your favourite programme. GREAT VIDEO GUYS, GREAt viDeo GUys, greAT VideO GuyS ...
I preferred the sound of the Wampler, though I can see the appeal of the Replicator. I also liked the gritty, midrange quality of the Tone City pedal. It's maybe not the best tape delay emulation, but I think it's a very good sound in its own right.
I love my Mooer REECHO pedal and its tape echo mode is fantastic for lap-steel sounds. That said, the replicator is lush, but I'd need to be playing live a lot more than I do to justify that indulgence!
I know this is a bit off topic but you guys should do a big muff type pedal shootout. compare a big muff with a bunch of big muff clones. great channel, very much addicted
+Eugene wulf Thank you Eugene. That tomfoolery has taken years of failure to perfect y'know. Such promising careers behind us etc.... ;0) Thanks for watching!
