I know she's meant to be something of a parody of pop artists... but I gotta admit, she actually kinda succeeds at being a pretty decent pop artist. Not much substance but that's pop for you in general. It's at least super-catchy and fun.
I think this song is about someone who spent the majority of there life by themselves never having that many friends and always having to deal with troubles by themself. This person eventually meets someone who is secretly a narcissist but they do not know that yet because narcissist are usually very charming at first. The two immediately become friends and the person which this song’s perspective is coming from absolutely adores this person and relies on them, hence the lyrics “you are the highlight of my lowlife”. They think this for two different reasons one they are always alone so they will attach onto anyone they can and two like I said first is a narcissist and because of this seems super charming and likable at first. As time goes on there relationship starts to slowly break down since this person is a narcissist, they manipulate and abuse this person yet they still manage to gaslight them into believing that they are still the best thing that ever happened to them and that everything bad that happens is their fault. Eventually the narrator of this song gets fed up and finally decides to leave but the narcissist still throws the blame on them and tries to convince them that they need them and can’t make it own there own hence the lines “and I get so lonely, I can’t make on my own”. This person does eventually escape the relationship and leaves. That or this song is just about a celebrity who got super popular and there fans are the “highlight of there lowlife” but I don’t feel like getting into that right now.
