Buckle up or be thrown from the vehicle! If you like 80's cult horror classics that are every bit as problematic as they are thought-provoking, then you'll love this full movie reaction to Sleepaway Camp!
If Aunt Martha hadn’t been nine kinds of crazy, she’d have been fun. Maybe she was fun anyway. I like her house and the sunny rooms. Desiree Gould died this year (2021) at 76. I loved her in Sleep away Camp.
@@everyonelovesmajima Second and third has Springsteen's sister. The fourth is a lifted footage nightmare. "Son of" (AKA Memorial Valley Massacre) is a unofficial, in name only sequel. "Return to" is a direct sequel to the first movie and reunites several of the original cast.
@@lazer3982 Felissa Rose says to this day ! fans always ask her to do the face ! and she seems like a good sport about it . Actually does it most of the time for them
That ending shot of Angela's frozen face still haunts me and my sister to this very day! Sometimes we'll randomly send it to each other to scare the other. 😂
@@johnrife7134 I have the movie from Scream or Shout Factory collector's edition. Actor that plays Ricky confirms he did all the kill scenes. The Director and writer even confirms it .
@@johnrife7134 Only the NAKED double is uncreddited Her mom didnt want her daugther do wear a strappon, so they got a small guy with a wigg on todo the final shot The guy aperantly had some sort of breakdown from that filming, that he wished to never be known of
The actress who played Angela, Felissa Rose talked about filming THAT scene and explained how they had to find a who was at least 18 but still have a small enough body to be the same size as her since she was 13. They found some guy, he got drunk as hell, and then they shot the scene with him wearing a mold of her face.
Because there was no movement, I almost thought it was a wax dummy or something. But then I remembered this is fucking SLEEPAWAY CAMP so they probably didn't have the budget for that.
Those shorts were fairly standard in the '80s, especially for stuff like jogging. There was a guy in the neighborhood that I grew up in who roller skated every day that weather allowed and it was always in those tiny shorts and a tight tank top...unless it was really hot, and then he wore no shirt. Dude was burly and fit. He had all the aunties at their windows or out on their stoops when he came through at his usual time.
These 80s movies had me think that Camp was just HAPPENED when you're a kid. That and showering at high school, your parents getting you a car, and your first kiss not being the most awkward thing.
"Angela" never existed, it was always Peter. Angela died in the accident and the aunt forced Peter to become his dead twin sister. And this scene prove that : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9PRnSi-CdUk.html Anyway, i love your reactions💜 Fun Fact: the body double that appears in the end, it was an 18-year-old student who had to get drunk to give himself courage, because he didn't feel comfortable coming out naked in the movie.
@@johnrife7134 I certainly did not say what his identity was. Just mention one fact that I found. At no time did I say who he was. In fact, the documental of the movie mentions this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g5QMxK8ESKk.html
Just some take-aways: Peter’s Aunt Martha should be the villain of the story because as a psychiatrist, she knew the harm in forcing a female identity onto Peter, but she wanted a daughter in “Angela” too much to care. I love Aunt Martha’s house. Why go to camp when you can watch tv and listen to mom? Peter knew on a level that Aunt Martha didn’t realize that Peter couldn’t pass as Angela even as a kindergarten kid. He and Angela had spied on their Dad and his boyfriend making love and saw that their bodies were alike. Later, Peter and Angela had played post office and would’ve realized their differences.
This was one of the better 80s Slasher movies ... it's Shocking ending is what it's most remembered for. All of the 80s Slasher Flicks tried to one-up each other with their own Twist Endings or final Jump Scares.
The curling iron death is so fucked. If I remember correctly, they originally shot a far explicit version actually showing it being shoved into her nether regions, but cut it cause, y'know, that's f'd up
I legit did not even fully realize that was happening with the curling iron! some part of my mind rebuked the possibility 😫🤢🥴. I was like "and you're burning her ARM while you smother her?"
its legit the one death in all horror movies ive ever seen that truly fucked me up mentally, like we all understand how much horror targets the "whore" but this took it to another level for me @___@
We actually met Felissa Rose a couple years ago at a convention. She is literally one of the most coolest, sweetest people I’ve met. Also, those two girls who bullied her are actually really close friends in real life❤️❤️
Felissa Rose who played Angela is now a horror icon and spokesperson. Shes also a regular on the Shudder movie marathon series Joe Bob's Last Drive In, where she's the resident "Mangled Dick Expert (tm)"... they always call her if theres a scene in a movie involving an aforementioned mangled johnson.
@@AlandaParker Sounds like it might be a reference to a scene from _Return to Sleepaway Camp_ (2008), a direct sequel to the original film. They also made _Sleepaway Camp 2_ and 3 in the late '80s, but _Return_ didn't acknowledge those. Just to warn you, none of the sequels are anywhere near as good as the original. They might be worth a look eventually, but there are plenty of better horror films out there that deserve to be seen first, like the first two _Psycho_ films, and the first two _Child's Play_ films.
I just exclaimed out loud to no one, " Oh no! This sweet woman is gonna watch THIS!? Mercy!"😅 Can't wait to watch later to see your reaction. I love your vids💜
Your reactions in this video were hilarious. Also, my husband and I always agree that the true villain of the movie is the aunt and that a prequel movie about her would be fantastic. I mean, the way the actress portrayed her was probably just inexperience but it added to tragedy that is Angela/Peter. In a very symbolic way, the aunt murdered Peter which, more so then the boat accident, set this whole thing in motion.
Jessica From what I've heard the director encouraged Desiree Gould play her the way she did because the character is mentally ill, and I've actually met people like her in real life and some even weirder, so to me it's rather realistic.
That woman was SICK! I knew she was functioning outside reality from her opening scene, but I never could've guessed the LEVEL of horror she was capable of 🥴
What do you think Aunt Martha's jail sentence would be? It's a really severe case of child abuse I'd say. Peter (Angela) would be put away in a mental hospital probably. I think there would be a chance of rehibillation since he was only 13 and the mental trauma was inflicted on him. All of that after his father and sister died.
@@bobbya9722 In the sequel, it's revealed that Angela was put in a mental hospital after the events of the first film and also had a sex change while there.
This movie is the definition of "so bad it's good" and is one of my all time favorite movies of any genre. It's charm is limitless. Just wanna add, Felissa Rose who played Angela is like, the sweetest soul in the world!
It's a lot better than most low budget horror movies. There's a lot more emphasis on characters and their relationships compared to other slasher movies. They cast a lot of actual teenagers too, as opposed to 20 something actors.
@@ryanjacobson2508 exactly. And all the great camp scenes are just so fun. Especially the needlessly long baseball scene. "This guy blows dead dogs" 😂😂😂🤣
@@metalmayhem3622 huh? Literally said it's one of my all time favorite movies? Annnnnd I like the sequels? Annnnnd I love Jason x? Annnnnd H6Curse? Annnnnnd Basket Case? Have you sat through Killer Rack and enjoyed every second of it? My guy wtf are you talking about? 😂 WEIRD flex
I saw this when I was 6. The ending shot of her face terrified me. Even now large, wide opened mouths make me shiver. The twist of course, went right over my little kid head. Also, knowing this movie like I do, i was legit on pins and needles watching your reactions. lol
The baseball game is legendary! "Eat $h*t and live Bill." Also as a child of the 80s my mom used to say "I'm laughing cause you didn't die." Definitely a have fun but don't die period of time.
Camps are terrible for some kids. An older boy tried to joke-drown me in the sea, knowing well I had thalassophobia. I hit him a few times and (admittedly hysterically) cursed at him, which got me "detention" in the hotel, as the supervisors laughed at me. Man, that sucked. Still hate the ocean.
Camps can bring out the worst in kids, and you dont actually feel bad that the people died in this movie (i was bullied every day of my life in school all boys catholic school) so yeah i know, i actually slightly cheered for angela
So weirdly enough, I’m only 21, yet this movie scared me shitless as a kid. The ending image is very haunting, and I still can’t get it out of my head til this day. It’s one of my all-time favorite horror movies because of the cheesiness and campiness (no pun intended). I’m so glad that you loved it as well.
Sleepaway Camp is bonkers. Angela has a bit of super strength to pull off some of these kills, but honestly - good for her. I recommend checking out the episode of How Did This Get Made? about it.
This one is one of my favorites, I saw it when I was 13 late one night on IFC, I'll never forget how my mouth literally hung open at the ending reveal of the peen peen. After the revelations at the end, go back and watch how Angie looked at Judy, she struggled with her attraction with her and also with Paul because of what they saw with their father and his lover. There's just so much to unpack in this movie. Personally I feel like ricky helped even if it's not canon.
it is an interesting story, nature vs nuture, an insane parent (aunt) and it was quite progressive in a way showing a loving relationship between two men the bed scene them sweet talking to each other, yeah how did angela know about the knife used to cut the bathroom screen, if ricky didnt say, then how did the little kids get chopped up when angela would have been in two places at once..
@@Greenwood4727 EXACTLY. That's my reasoning too. The only thing I could think of is Ricky or Paul mentioned it off screen. And yes I really love how different it was from the slasher of the time (at least to me) it's one of the few films that really brought a physical reaction from me like that. I was shocked.
you feel sympathy for angela, and being bullied all my school life, part of me is so very happy that the bullies died..its quite deep for a "slasher", its one of my favs the showing the gay relationship between the two fathers in a sweet tender way unlike some movies on the 80's
A lot of 80s slashers are weirdly progressive like that. This one being more than most, but even if you go to some of the bigger ones you have child's play 1-3 with its final boy and nightmare on elm street (the sequels) having more african american representation than most modern horror movies you'd think would do better than late 80s Freddy Krueger flix, not to mention nightmare 2 being aggressively homosexual in nearly every aspect.
I grew up in the 80's and i probably saw all these slashers and horrors a little too early, but i can say that at that time it was more the story rather than the tropes of later movies, Black christmas talking about abortion just after roe vs wade, texas chainsaw Franklin was a "real" person mean and nasty and just like all humans, thats what people forget in the later movies people dont have to be tropes
This is one of my favorites. As low budget as the film is, the special effects are indeed top notch. The sequels on the other hand.....not so much. The plot twist at the end was highly controversial for the day, but still shocks even by today's standards. They made a mold of the actress's face and put it on a male college kid to get the shot. He requested to be drunk before hand because he was nervous about being nude.
I had never heard of this movie before, but watched the reaction because you're so entertaining and I had a feeling this one was going to be particularly good (especially once I knew it was an 80's movie). You didn't disappoint.
That scene with angela being pointed at by the boy in the bed was her fighting the realization that she was really a boy. It was him telling herself, "You're not really a girl...why you're kissing/stop kissing that boy". *That's some S+ tier 80's trauma right there.* BTW, if you liked this, in your free time you should check out a 1980 flick called "Dressed to Kill" starring Michael Caine and directed by Brian De Palma...lol, trust me. Also, I love how you would always say, "Leave sweet little Angela alone!". IDK, but reactors have like the worst instincts ever. Great Reactions BTW
@Brooklyn Bleek ok...🙄😒...okay I think I follow you. And I think just-🙄😖- according to your own logic I think you meant to say in the second sentence "It was him/her telling him/herself 'You're not really a BOY' ". Cuz, like you said he/she was trying to fight the reality of his/her own Boyness in order to make the kiss okay. So what you're saying is the pointing is Peter telling himself, As he's being kissed by another boy, "This is okay. Because you're not really a boy. You're a Girl. You are what you've been raised to be. You're THAT" *points at girl sister* "Be THAT. Be a girl." 🙄🤔Yeah that makes sense. I mean, as much sense as anything in this movie can make🤷♂️
Just know, that shot of Ricky in the wing was never meant to be seen that clearly. It was meant to just be a shadowy figure, but the conversion to HD BluRay made it visible
@@egglady a common problem with remastering onto blu ray with a lot of films actually- lighting levels are changed sometimes to too bright to reveal something meant to be obscure, other times too dark to cover up something that should be more clearly seen. That's why sometimes owning a DVD or even VHS of the movie comes in handy to actually see the proper version with original lighting/cinematography. HD can be a very mixed blessing sometimes.
Thank you. My depression decided to pull me completely down into the depths today… your reactions brought my head above the proverbial water… so thank you.
As someone who grew up at a summer camp, and who worked at one throughout much of his teenage and early adulthood years, I tell you there's something very effective about that opening pan across a deserted summer camp. Very creepy!
You right, the 80's were a dangerous time. We used to play at a construction site until one of the stone columns rolled over and crush a girl to death. We stopped going in that area.
The mustache - the actor thought he had completed his scenes and shaved so they had to improvise for one scene. Unfortunately that scene happened to be a closeup. Also - the officer doesn't even seem phased by the inconsistency between drowning in the lake and being found 20' away from the water hidden under a boat. Overall I really love this film. Thanks for checking it out. 2 and 3 are decent attempts to carry the franchise, but obviously since Angela's "secret" is already out of the bag that bit of shock value isn't really a prominent factor. They also switched actresses from Felissa Rose to Pamela Springsteen and the sequels have more of a campy vibe to them. ✌
So you know, that shot of Ricky in the wig is sort of an accident. When it first came out, lower quality screens meant it was more like a vague silhouette, but newer HD lets us see very clearly that they just had Ricky's actor wearing a wig.
Yes!!! As a child of the 80s I'm glad you checked out this classic. So to break it down the real Angela died and her brother was the Angela (aka the Killer) we see through the move. Basically I always felt like he was indoctrinated by his crazy Aunt. The actress who played Angela Felissa Rose Esposito is a real sweet heart though. They made couple of sequels too. But you did a great job analyzing this movie. I first saw this move when I was 7.
Wanted to say a quick thank you and i think you are fabulous. Older here and ive LOVED your videos. ive watched most of them but never commented...until now. this reaction is everything. this movie is a mess and a half and im soooooo glad you saw how much fun it is. loved your fresh modern take, but also appreciated the film in the era it was filmed. gay guy here and i gotta say i think you are STUNNING. when you smile i get a young Vanessa Williams, the hair is ALWAYS laid, and you NEEEEEEEED to sell your earings because you are the perfect model for them. stay strong and love the videos! The Exorcist reaction is 💯💯💯. all love from NC 🐦
Thank you so much you’re so lovely 🥹💛 I agree with you 1000 this movie is CLASSIQUE! I literally could not have predicted what this film was gonna be going into it, but it delivered pure entertainment!!!
Thank you so much for watching this movie while considering the era in which it was made. Men in short shorts and no such thing as cgi for the effects was normal in those days. The artists who did the post-kill shots were on the same caliber as the ones who did the "living dead" zombie movies to come. Make up artists were amazing back then. I'm glad you appreciated their art and didn't find it 'bad' or 'dated.' I idolized those artists growing up and miss them in modern film-making. I also enjoyed your take on the subject matter of the film itself. I'm glad and relieved that this movie didn't upset or offend you. I was a stupid kid when this movie came out so I had no idea how polarizing the film would be 4 decades later. I just saw it as a "bad guys who deserve to die do die and I'm glad" horror movie with a twist ending. For me, it was what The Sixth Sense ended up being when that movie came out. Revisiting this movie as an adult, I still feel the same way. Except now I can feel sympathy for stupid young hormonal Paul (?) wanting to make it to second base with a "girl" so he could be like the other boys. When I was younger, I hated him pressuring "Angela" and was glad he got the ending he got. Being nice to "the girl" gave him no right to push when she said no. As a preteen I wanted him dead after that first scene when he had her on her back, even without knowing how the movie would end. As an adult, I'm sorry he died for his hormones, but I still sympathize with the main protagonist. And I'm nostalgically attached to this campy old horror film so it's nice to simply watch someone who doesn't read too much into it. The world was very different in those days, for good or worse.
I watched that as a kid and never understood what actually happened to her, until years later in high school it all suddenly clicked and I screamed in the middle of class.
The cold part is Alanda seems as if she's not sure exactly what happened to Judy, and I'd hate to be the one to tell her. I'm pretty sure that kind of comment would get taken down anyway.
Alanda, you need to watch both the original "Carrie" and another excellent horror film called "Cujo". Both of these films are Stephen King film adaptations that shouldn't be missed. B-movie horror films from the 80's will never be duplicated, ever.
Yes, Carrie + Cujo + Pet Semetary + Stand By Me + Christine (which is another John Carpenter flick) all would be so fun w/ Alanda loving this era so much!
I saw this movie when I was a child in the 90’s, and I just remember DYING of laughter at that ending! Watching you see this for the first time, I died all over again! LMFAO
Since we're in the spirit of Halloween horror... you definitely need to react to The Evil Dead. The original 1981 I have not seen anybody react to these one.
One of the absolute best low budget/indie films of the 1980’s (Great cast great location, the writing is really good for what it is) The two follow up sequels are really good also Angela is a very unique Slasher Villain because she is a victim too! Return to Sleepaway Camp is a horrible train wreck though avoid it at all costs it devalues everything the original film is) Awesome reaction 👍👍❤️👍👍
Absolutely love your reaction!! I also love that you progressively called Judy, Meg and Mel by the wrong names because they don't deserve to be called by their real names 😂 (P.S. I love that your hair is serving heavy 80s vibes!!)
Here's something different, The Boston Strangler from 1968. The actor who get an arrow in the throat is in it as well as top actors Henry Fonda, Tony Curtis (Jamie Lee Curtis's father), George Kennedy, etc. Big actors in the day. Excellent police procedural, horror elements and it was really based on the true story of Albert DeSalvo, the real Boston Strangler. Excellent movie.
This was the movie that made the whole world fall in love with Angela. She "stole our hearts away", as they say! Who'd have guessed that a horror movie could be so heartwarming.
I love that as soon as I see your face on a video, I feel like I can put a thing of popcorn in the microwave, take it out, sit on my chaise, and just unwind from the day. It's so relaxing especially your front intro.. I love it so ♥️♥️♥️
It's not my favorite franchise, however unlike the Nightmare, Friday, or Halloween series where a part of me rooted for the survival of most of the victims, the contrast is true for this series. Angela's victims are awful human beings. Also... Light as a feather, stiff as a board...okay, someone (you) is watching The Craft later.
In the last scene of the movie Angela isn't interpreted by Felissa Rose, it's actually interpreted by a male actor since Felissa's mom wouldn't allow her to be in that scene, and the actor is wearing a mask of Felissa's face made by the makeup team
omg i'm so excited to see your reaction to this unique crazy ass movie!! that ending is... i can't even find the right adjective for it but i couldn't stop thinking about it for days. i was IN SHOCK
I highly suggest the 1982 horror anthology film 'Creepshow'. It's directed by George Romero (night/dawn of the living dead, etc), with some stories by Stephen King (he even stars in it as well).
Of all the horror movies you said you'd react to, I never would've guessed Sleepaway Camp was on the list. BTW I still think the makers of The Crying Game owe creative credit to this movie.
the second you said "oh the girl died!" and "angela must be the killer" I was like roll credits LMAO I don't think I've ever seen someone new to this movie actually guess the ending, let alone in the first 20 minutes!
I was sooo happy to see this was your next review. Sleepaway Camp is very much out of Left Field but this is definitely a classic. Thank you for choosing this. This camp though. Dang. The 80s were wild. This is one of those classic movies that there is NO WAY IN HELL you could remake in today's environment, but I am glad this exists.
I somehow missed this because it came out when I’d just gone to college. So I watched it before watching your reaction. Great reaction, again, and as a Gen X’er who dressed this way in high school, can confirm those shorts left little to the imagination. They made me uncomfortable to look at and wear. But we all wore them anyway. Shocked now as I remember boys jiggling around in those shorts and it was normal.😂
The worst part of you not having a Patreon is not being able to see you’re whole unedited reaction while we find ways to watch the movie on our own and synch up. The best part of you not having a Patreon is that you watch what you want to watch when you want to watch it and can keep control of your channel. So many reactors lose control of their watch list and then people whine about how they’re just watching the same things as every other reactor. Your sense of humor and the fact that you can make the jokes and still keep track of what’s going on plus your selection is what makes this the best reaction channel on RU-vid.
The commentary was hysterical! The actor who played the cop shaved his moustache for another role, not realizing he had to still shoot the final scenes...the Director and Producer were not happy.
Watching your reactions are hilarious. You remind me of Yvette Nicole Brown, especially when she is on Talking Dead. I have been up for the last few hours watching
Sista you are hilarious and gorgeous! You make my day when I see an upload. It seems you got 80s horror covered so I would like to recommend The Exorcist (1973), The People Under the Stairs (1991) and the original Candyman (1992). But I'll watch you react to anything, so do you boo!
The curling iron death scene is so brutal & disturbing despite not being graphically shot or shown. She definitely had the most painful death in the movie having a hot curling iron shoved in your private area is totally brutal 😭
4:50 I hate everything about the 80's being seemingly being canceled. But a character like that should've NEVER been written in a movie that isn't highlighting the dangers of pedophilia. 🤦🏿♂️
