Back and forth conversation between Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Gus (Philip Seymour Hoffman) gives Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) a bottle of scotch as a present, which is bugged. Why would Gus bug it in the first place?
Philip Seymour Hoffman stole every scene he was in during this movie. Do you agree?
Charlie Wilson's War (2007) SYNOPSIS: Based on the outrageous true story, Charlie Wilson's War stars Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman in the film Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times calls "wickedly funny."

@@soundhealer6043 The point of the movie was that we had a chance to help these people out after the Soviets left and potentially stabilize the area (to some degree). But, we didn't follow through with relatively inexpensive practical projects to actually help the people, after spending billions on weapons, and instead left it a bathtub drain where the biggest bully on the block ruled by terror. If anything, it showed how inept our political system was and still is with regards to the allocation of our tax dollars.

And the book (and story) is even wilder. Superb movie - and as you said, it didn't get the recognition it deserved. But then neither did Charlie Wilson or Gusav Avrakotos - at least not outside the CIA. Within the CIA, they are both revered.

@@thinkcivil1627 There was no chance these people fought for Sharia law. They were not gonna change. The entire war started because the communist government banned child marriage and promoted female education.
@thinkcivil1627
@thinkcivil1627 3 года назад
@@travisbickle4360 I think most of us understand that. There's lots of reasons why this area of the world has been at war and will continue to be unstable. But, there are practical things that the average person in that area needs and we were in a position to help them. Politics aside, the average citizens of these countries lack the basic needs and at the very least, this would have been an opportune time to have gone in there and done this. We missed that brief window of trust.

@@Yodavid1 Which portion would you like an explanation on? The first part referencing James Bond and Thomas Jefferson or the second part about opening the bottle of Scotch? James Bond is the name of the most famous fictional spy in the English Speaking world, he's known for being suave and clever, basically the perfect image anyone in the West would have of what a spy should look and act like. Thomas Jefferson is one of the founding fathers of the United States and considered one of the greatest statesmen of his time. They're both saying the other is not like those characters, Gust, an American Spy, is nothing like James bond and Charlie Wilson, the Congressman is nothing like Thomas Jefferson. They're insulting each other in a funny way. The second is a Charlie joking that the Scotch might have a poison trap included due to the speaker bug that had been placed on the bottle. Gust is continuing the joke by saying that while it shouldn't they should be cautious opening it in case it is in fact trapped.

@@HillTrekkerSarge Modern? No. Stable, yes. The key was like Charlie said, right after the war we should have invested money in restocking the goat/sheep herds, paving the roads, building up schools, hospitals, infrastructures, and making it obvious that we were the ones responsible for helping the Afghans defeat the Soviets because as far as they were concerned, the weapons came from Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. When over half the population is under the age of 14, that is the time to go in and do everything to make sure they love you, but instead we let the "crazies rolling into Kandahar" be the ones who the young population became endeared to.

When you lived about seven houses down and your father was not only good friends with Congressman Wilson, but worked in his political campaigns, it's hard to watch without making comparisons. Lower voice, prettier women, (hey, i may have been young but...), and i would encourage anyone interested in this epoch of American History to invest some time learning the huge amount of history excluded from this Hollywood version of a great story. In fact, Congressman Wilson was in my dad's office telling him the whole story having JUST returned as i walked into the office and was told by my father to come in and sit down (after the Congressman and I shook hands which I did not need to be told to do). Please allow a non-plot comment: Congressman Wilson was loved by, and was loyal to, his constitutes. I saw him at a meeting where he spoke (I had just joined my father's insurance practice) having not seen him for 6 or so years (college). He recognized me immediately walking across the room to ask after my dad. He always treated me like family, as we say in the south. Low and loud voice that now makes me wonder if he was a little deaf, always dressed in a "high-dollar" suit and yes, often with "Las Vegas" looking, show girl type females around him. I heard him say more than once, politics was invented so ugly guys could get..., well you know.

Love the subtle nod Aaron Sorkin gives to 'The West Wing' in this.

The President's Chief of Staff, in 'The West Wing', had a secretary who had a habit of listening at the door ... Margaret was slightly unhinged, but she ran Leo's office like a finely tuned Swiss Watch ...

Really, really good script and one of those rare films made for grown ups. I also recommend Bridge of Spies (2015) with Hanks and Mark Rylance.
