Between all the craziness, drug trips, and general criminality of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," perhaps the craziest thing in the entire movie is when Hunter S. Thompson drives onto the tarmac of the Las Vegas airport to let his lawyer, a Cuban national, get directly in line and onto the departing plane. And no one bats an eye or even questions him.

Silly headcanon: this is a holodeck program that Janeway is running in her spare time after getting bored with that gothic novel, only she's hacked herself in as one of the NPCs because she got sick of Leon when playing it the first time around and wanted to off him. The hasty resolution to the murder plot is the holodeck trying to stitch together a semi-plausible ending without the plot unravelling completely.

Fun Fact: There was a time during the production of Murder, She Wrote where Jessica Fletcher appeared only in "bookend form" while other characters or stories would take place as the center plot. When Roses says Jessica's admirers are thieves, weirdos, etc, she probably means David from Lovers and Other Killers; Errol here, and of course, Preston Giles. Maybe Dennis Stanton, although it's kind of suggested he reforms because of Jessica. And maybe Elliot Robinson from "Menace, Anyone" (who seems to be flirting with Jessica early on, then turns out to be complicit with the killer.) But Jessica has LOTS more male friends, many of whom seem to be flirting or to like her as more than a friend: Colonel Goddard, who was part of Frank's squadron in the Air Force and appears in two episodes in season 5; a very Irish fellow professor in season 8; a very ethical district attorney candidate in "The Family Jewels" and a friend from the British Home Office in "Tinker, Tailor." And there are some others whose estates she visits after meeting them at conference, such as in "Powder Keg." It's not always clear whether they're dating, or they want to date her, etc, but they're often going with her to parties or the theater. And sometimes it seems like there could be more to her and Seth, behind the scene. The strange thing is, Seth can be...hugely old-fashioned, to put it politely, when it comes to attitudes he expresses about male-female relationships. She calls him out on it, but she's close with him anyway.

There's an episode called "It Runs in the Family" where Emma MacGill solves a murder with the guy from Mr. Belvadere and it stars a really young Jane Leeves

So okay... John Astin (aka Gomez Addams) was in three episodes as Harry Pierce: "Joshua Peabody Died Here... Possibly" (absolutely CLASSIC Cabot Cove fare), "A Lady in the Lake" (okay) and "Sticks and Stones" (!!!!!). I think this is remarkable because usually the murderers are characters that have been newly introduced that episode (of course)... but in "Sticks and Stones," we get a RECURRING CHARACTER -- an upstanding member of the Cabot Cove community -- as the murder suspect!!! So I think it would be cool if Roses broke that down for us, even though it's actually three unconnected episodes.

This show used the sit-com technique of introducing characters who are old friends of the main character, or live in the small town, yet are...only seen in that one episode.

@@jessicalillianweinberg4401 Growing Pains actually played with this by introducing Matthew Perry as a boyfriend for a few episodes and *then* killing him off. Whether that was the original plan or not, I don't know, but it was way better than, say, Family Ties introducing Alex's "best friend" as a guy who's already died of suicide.

While it's kind of surprise to see how few women there are high up in business or some media field on this show (compared to today) I have been pleased to realize that the ones there are don't all turn out to be murderers or victims. In fact, I feel like the heiress / trophy wife types are more likely to turn out to be murderers...many women who have a business or are working in, say a media field where there are few women are sympathetic characters whom Jessica sticks up for or protects. (And Jessica herself does a few business ventures.) The writer in "Unauthorized Obituary" is sleazy, but that's due to the particular types of books she writes, not just being a woman successful and writing books. And Jessica even finds out about the good side of her.

I must thank you. Genuinely. After watching this episode when it came out last year, I went to go find more of Kate Mulgrew (in anything really). I watched all of Voyager. And then that led me to progressively more and more scary media. Eventually I was comfortable enough to watch zombies and apocalypse stories (which for me prior hadn't been my jam in years due to long personal reasons). The short story is, thanks to you, Kate Mulgrew was my gateway to zombies. And I've never been happier. Also Voyager is great even if it hadn't led me anywhere else after, and if you Google the Janeway Bun Scale you will hopefully laugh as much as I did.
