Labyrinth Warriors - It was Simulated Universe but in Genshin Impact. We were 🤏 THIS CLOSE 🤏 to getting another permanent combat endgame mode.
"Labyrinth Warriors" ran in Genshin Impact patch 2.2. It was a great, roguelike combat event almost identical to Honkai: Star Rail's Simulated Universe. It gave many of us hope about future endgame improvements. It wasn't to be.
What do you think of Labyrinth Warriors - should it have been a permanent mode? Or should Hoyo have gone in a different direction? Leave a comment and I'll respond!

@@BulletSponge71436 nah "entirely"? If Genshin now has an endgame where the meta keeps on changing every single patch, I'd agree with it being a FOMO game but there's NONE. Spiral Abyss is too easy that you can clear it with 4* characters. You dont need c6r5 neuvillete unless you want to solo it which is not what the game mode was intended to be. Whoever is having anxiety just bcs they dont have a c6r5 character in this game that dont have any endgame content is just some gacha addict trying to justify their addictions. Different case with HSR where we have THREE endgame modes. (SU expansion, 2 MoCs, 2 PF that cycle often) This is where FOMO gets in. The only FREE character that actually do well in PF was just Herta and Dr Ratio (but his needs of debuff kinda limit his potential in PF). Look at how they made the buff for the latest cycle of PF. ALL 3 buffs need Follow-Up characters, except for the 2nd one, which is, ironically, the worst out of those 3. Imagine a player with no FuA characters to clear these contents, imagine the f2p having to struggle to clear the sole content that give them the most stellar jades in the game (Genshin has exploration, HSR has its endgame) just bcs they are f2ps lacking characters. Notice the loophole? This same loophole is why they gave Dr Ratio for free last patch.

I am a Chinese player during Labyrinth Warriors event came out at that time. Hoyo always use events as experiment and trial for new game mode. I can definetly see that when they put Labyrinth Warriors during Enazuma patch. But the player's reaction to that patch is extremely POOR! I remember that during that patch everyone on Bilibili (Youtude in China and where Hoyo's main playerbase gather the most) is complaining about this event. Even big influential content creator on Bilibili at that time do videos say that Hoyo is dying because Labyrinth Warriors event is boring and make no sense to Genshin impact's most attracting aspect regarding to gameplay. People complain how Hoyo force casual player to spend more money to buy Meta characters and in Chinese we have a word for that (逼氪, literly means forcing you put money on gacha game). There are many players just skip that parch and Hoyo is loosing their loyal players during that time. We can definetly see that during Inazuma Hoyo want to make more challenging content (the whole Inazuma area is designed to be unwelcome and dangerous and difficult even for exploring content) and therefore they try Labyrinth Warriors events. But everyone at that time (very early stage of the game) is frustrated to see this kind of difficult content. But I want to say that situation has always been changing since Genshin release. So maybe Hoyo really should try to pick up the concept of developing challenging overworld exploration and combat gameplay NOW. Because compare to Inazuma patch now there's a growing need for old player to enjoy combat without getting too board while exploring overworld. Maybe seeing those dangerous mini-boss in the wild of Fountain is a good sign. I think Hoyo is cooking something for that reason. BTW, they do mention Genshin is a massive game and every tiny change to the orinigal function NEEDs ridiculous efforts by IT department to FIX the BUGS. I think that's the reason why HSR has more QoL improvement than Genshin. They simply learn from Genshin's short-comings and apply it to HSR. And that's the reason why I feel like comparing them with each other is not fair to Genshin.

Thanks for your information! It is hard for us global players to know what the player response is like in China. It was hard just because players were not prepared for this event at all, barely had good artifacts, characters were lvl80, talents and weapons too, team building s*cked (like physical Fischl and cryo Xiangling builds were considered as a good option lol) Remember that it was back in 1.2, and people thought Dragonspine was hard, and enemies on the 12th floor was unreachable for most players, despite having a few simple elites to fight. Now compare this to the second time Symphony was around, it was 3.2: people already figured out how to build teams, had a big roster of characters at this point, gathered a good amount of great artifacts, devs released broken dendro meta. So it's not that event that was nerfed, it's us who grew older and wiser

With Labyrinth Warriors, they can explain it by saying is a remnant of the ley lines and can appear suddenly around Tevyat. This way hoyo could make thematic Labyrinth Warriors castles that reflect the region they spawn in and contain enemies from the respected area. This mode could do so much for this game and yet hoyo refuses to implement it, because they see that not everyone 36 star the abyss. The reason why people don't 36 star it all the time is quite simple, people just don't find it engaging enough to do it and they realized you can just wait for the next day to get the same amount of primos (150 if you have welkin moon) instead of wasting time to finish the last room.

Spiral abyss had one small, limited-time event that ties it to the Genshin lore, albeit not with any of the main playable characters. iirc it was something with Dragonspine where you found notes of an adventurer who has already passed away long ago. In his lifetime, Musk Reef was not a reef in the ocean. It was mountain. Ages passed by and that region became flooded by the ocean. The gate to enter the Spiral Abyss was once the peak of that same mountain. Maybe this is also related to Venti's acts in the Archon War as, iirc, it was he who razed the region with his anemo power which also caused many of buildings of the old age to fly off and helped create the islands of the Golden Apple Archipelago.

came from zy0x on twitch-- he watched this video on stream! i'm so glad there's a video talking about this! i feel like it expresses basically everything i've ever thought about this event. i had just started not long before this event came out (i started in 1.5, i think?) and i wasn't able to clear the lvl 90 stages. i remember being over the moon at the idea of the event returning eventually so that i could properly beat it... and look at where we are now :( i loved labyrinth warriors so much (not only for its gameplay, but also because it was a childe event and he was one of my favorite characters at the time) and it really was peak genshin for me. i think this was also the same patch that tsurumi island came out (which is my favorite island) so i look back on it really fondly. but i latched onto labyrinth warriors so much because, at least to me, not only was it one of the best events by far just in terms of its concept, i think it's also the one most rife with potential for expansion. labyrinth warriors wasn't everyone's cup of tea (even among meta players, for some reason) but i feel like it would be so easy to re-tool it and add modes within the event that *would* appeal to those players. just like how SU has swarm and GnG-- SU at its base is whatever for me, but swarm is probably my favorite mode in all of HSR. i remember writing out my survey after labyrinth warriors gushing about how much i could see the event getting expanded in the future, getting all hyped to do things like solo challenges or maybe an endless mode with content that scales higher and higher the further you go until eventually it becomes near-impossible... alas, maybe one day. i'm just glad that other people see how awesome this event was. considering how many events they re-tool and rerun, it's really weird that they haven't even brought it back as a limited-time event again :/ and yet we get the 50th lame iteration of theatre mechanicus. 5:22 i am SO glad you highlighted the forge here, it has honestly been my favorite part of exploring fontaine by far. i know genshin's exploration/open world is also kind of a controversial topic amongst genshin players (honestly, what isn't) but i'm glad other people recognize it as being one of genshin's truly exceptional qualities. mostly because of the music and scenery (sometimes quests), but so much of genshin's exploration has an absolutely massive atmospheric appeal to me and has given me so many experiences that i won't forget. i wish people didn't trash-talk it so much, because i feel like if you're willing to give yourself over to the game and actually immerse yourself in the world you're exploring, (and don't view it purely as a vehicle for dispensing gacha rewards), it's a beautiful experience. the one-time domains is a great point too. have you ever watched out-of-bounds videos about some of the old 1.0 domains in the game? it's crazy how massive they are, and how little of the area is actually used as a play-space! i feel like so many of the one-time domains in sumeru only existed to try and teach players about dendro reactions... hyv, i miss them, please bring them back :( sorry for being so rambly! this was a really well-made video, you have earned a like and sub :) also... 11:39 man that trotter was tragic LOL

Thanks for the tip that Zy0X reacted and thanks for coming to watch here! I went and watched his vod. Did not expect that to happen! RE: Labyrinth Warriors - I 100% agree about Labyrinth Warriors being expandable and that's what I tried to allude to towards the end of the vid. If you noticed Zy0x in his vod started to talk a little about some different ideas for expanding it. Genshin's combat is so fun and the game has so much potential for these expansions, everybody has awesome ideas for what they could do with it! Adopting something like Labyrinth Warriors as a base and expanding on it from there would be cool. I have asked for Labyrinth Warriors as permanent content in at least 50% of surveys. RE: Exploration - It's nice to see how someone feels the same way! Fontaine's forge was so exciting to discover. The fact that it was unmarked and something you could only clear after exploring most of the other region made it a goal for me to work towards. The Arkhium Forging setpiece was fun, and coming back to it after it flooded was a fun reveal too. The reason I'm still here after all this time is because they constantly add new areas that make me go "Wow!" Another example were the floating cubes. It was only 1-2 hours of gameplay, but it was an incredible setpiece. Cheers and thanks again!

I like Genshin's exploration too, BUT I will never again say that it's good. Simply because there's no endgame content. Until they add an actual endgame content I will be shidding on Genshin's exploration. 3+ years of monotone bs is enough, I will *not* tolerate any praise of Genshin.

Ahh I was wondering where you went in particular. Discourse is something I do quite enjoy so you did make a particular impression on me with your first video, which resonated with my feelings at the time of playing the Luofu arc. Speaking of presentation, I really liked the presentation of this video! I once looked to make a discussion video like this in the past and even wrote out an entire script but I didn't really feel enamored with the tone so it never got past the -attempted- voice recording stage. I particularly admire the audio quality of your video as well as your fairly good articulation, really makes it quite pleasant to sit through. I'm looking forward to your next video!

Very good video, just a thought on single domains getting less and less and none (for now) in fontaine, I think they simply gradually made them directly in the overworld, starting with Inazuna they created very complex and big dungeons in the overworld directly so there wasn't any necessity anymore for domains that simulate an interior because everything is directly in the overworld. In Fontaine in particular there are very complex underwater structure and buildings that probably would have been single domains in Monstadt or Liyue.

The inescapable problem with more endgame content is, anything repeatable that feels required eventually becomes a chore. Simulated Universe was fun... for a month or so, then it became a grind, and all the fresh elements became stale. Labyrinth would have had the same problem if it was permanent. It's still better than the Abyss, but if they brought it back it'd likely be an add-on rather than a replacement, just like HSR... because this is a gacha game, so it needs a no-frills DPS dungeon that can't be cheesed except with a credit card. Bringing Labyrinth back with no significant rewards would be an option, but then it ends up like TCG, where hardly anyone plays it and people seem to get angry when it takes up dev time. There's just no ideal solution; nobody likes the Abyss, but anything they tried to replace it with would soon be just as unpopular for pretty much the same reasons. Maybe that's why they put it on a random island in the middle of nowhere.
@apachers2807
@apachers2807 2 месяца назад
What you described is the inescapable problem with permanent content in general. When it's fresh it's fun and exciting but eventually it loses it's freshness and people lose interest. But that's why these are live services games, they're supposed to be built upon, expand on ideas and release new fresh content. New content will always eventually get stale, and permanent content will feel like a chore. Arknight's Integrated Strategies was the same, and HSR's SU is the same. But that's why these 2 games constantly update their game modes on a bi/tri-monthly basis to retain interest in their game modes. I think Swarm Disaster and Gears and Gold did an exceptional job at retaining interest because of their replayability and challenge. And even if those 2 do eventually become stale you are safe to assume another SU spin-off will come out. That's the difference with Genshin and HSR Imo. Genshin tried end game content, saw it didn't work and just shrugged, went "oh well that's it" and gave up. HSR continued to experiment with end game content and struck gold. Now they have 3 game modes that you could say are end-game content that are both fun and challenging, and updated regularly.

04:37 yep, Before the Simulated Universe they had it in Honkai Impact 3rd already, they planned to implement it in all their games i guess but something stopped them from doing so (Probably Cai Haoyu thought making the game harder would make them lose players). I think it’s safe to assume ZZZ will have its own version as well. Played Genshin Day 1 and left it Day 1 because the world felt too empty, but if they had made this mode permanent i would have definitely played it again from 2.2 onwards.

Another great thing about simulated universe is that it gets tied into the lore of the game, both in terms of the gamemode having a clear place within the world, and also in terms of the curios, encounters, and expansions having opportunities to learn more about the setting. Im never looking at Nous and Mythus the same way again after Gold and Gears' lore drops.

Also, adding to the stuff that HSR did better than genshin. The introduction to both MoC and Pure Fiction are way better, literally MoC you get a person from the Garden of Recollection to tell you that it was memories from ancient civilizations and times and it could help to thread a new future. Pure Fiction is literally us reading books from the Xianzhou and getting like pulled inside and live the fight, it has lore, something to at least make it feel more appealing to do

Man, my favorite event(s) were definitely Labyrinth Warriors, the first Treasure Hunting event (there was an Abyss Mage challenge gauntlet scattered in Stormterror's Lair and I had to call friends for help at the time!), the big combat event from Unreconciled Stars (where the team has to gather energy and deposit it while fending off attackers), and now the new Hilichurl event is slowly making its way to my favorites list. The reputation system had so much potential and promise, but no, it was a letdown. They could even make "random abyss rifts", like limited time challenges scattered across Teyvat for a new endgame... Heck, they can even make a simulated universe, but make it Nahida attempting to re-develop the Akasha terminal in lore... the possibilities are endless, it's just Hoyo chooses not to do it.

Genshin Impact's Spiral Abyss is by far the worst and most unsatisfying endgame dungeon mode I have ever seen. I have played several of similar endgame modes from different games, and every single one of them was better designed and more fun than Spiral Abyss. The only reason I even look at Spiral Abyss' direction are the small rewards every couple of weeks, and even then I don't even bother every time. Meanwhile in every other game, I felt like I could do the endgame dungeons forever just for fun. Biggest reasons that make the Spiral Abyss unenjoyable to me are how disconnected the gameplay is from the other 99.9% of the game, how it forces you to play in a specific way, expects you to use certain types of characters even if none of them appeal to you, and lastly, the timer. I would forgive so much if it didn't have that timer, which is nothing more than artificial difficulty. Then there are the baffling little things that make me think the whole mode was never fully thought through, or just lazily designed. Like the game spitting you out and forcing you to go through two loading screens to continue, if you accidentally keep hitting air after the last enemy, because the exit and normal attack share the same button. I would much rather have something like the Labyrinth Warriors, or even world levels 9 and 10, and wouldn't miss it if the Spiral Abyss got left behind and stopped refreshing. Excellent video. Great voice, really well put together, and everything was well explained.

We should also try remembering Genshin had coop raid bosses before as well. I can't remember what the event was cos I just started playing the game when the event was on (v1.x). Since I was a noob then, I remember I had to go on discord to recruit people to carry me to get the minimum score required to get all rewards. It was tough for me at that time, but it was fun, having to interact with other better players giving advice on what handicap to choose and what char to choose etc. then going into battle and just trying to survive. But I guess it generated too much anxiety? there was a couple of boss rush events after that, but iirc they were single player modes and were pretty easy. The thing that killed all end game content, are the overly anxious casual players, who can't/won't invest time into building chars for combat, but cannot stand missing out on any event rewards, so they whine incessantly about the difficulty of the events, so the rest of the players are left with kiddy games like balloon chasing... It's frustrating that Genshin just choose to cater to these casuals who dun give a f about the longevity or potential of the game. Though I know that decision is based on who is banking the payrolls of their devs.

It seems that genshin dev don't understand what casual player are and they think casual are just player that want little effort or easily clear any quest or exploration in the game. They just think Casual player are just stuck in their own bubble afraid something new but in the real meaning casual are the first stage to convince player to improve their skillset and naturaly they become experience/ hardcore player, this game skill ceiling are not that high, easily understandable and the elemental reaction is simple but lies a quite neat and many variety of option to make reaction based on what type of team you have not too complex but it is fun when you know what you are doing. the sad part are those who deny want to get new content are most likely just a collector, they get the chracter they want and then leave it as it is without even bother to use it and they think it is ok which cause division in the community sadly it;s been 3= year and they still cater to player like this than casual and experience/hardcore player.

To this day, I’ll never understand why they didn’t bring this mode back 😢 I started Genshin back in 2.0, and it was a fun game for a while, but the combat started to feel boring. I had very low investment too. My best team was like level 70 units. But I still played Labyrinth Warriors, and it was fun as fuck. It singlehandedly made me love Genshin combat, because it allowed me to better understand reactions, and try out units I’ve never used before. Plus, that one constellation buff was so awesome. Being able to use C1 Bennet when I only had C0 at the time changed everything for me. I wasn’t even upset I couldn’t beat the hardest difficulty, as I had heard even high invested F2P accounts struggled with it. Overall, it was a good, unique, challenging, and fun event that has every reason to return. If the Genshin team was the Honkai team, Labyrinth Warriors would’ve been made into an Endgame Mode two years ago.

HSR isn't afraid to reference or outright borrow ideas from other games. The sim universe is much more like Hades with the various gods, fixed bosses and slowly evolving story. The side stories have borrowed gameplay from the Yakuza management sims and Pheonix Wright. Aetherium wars takes gameplay and story beats from pokemon. None of this makes the game worse, it gives us way more quality content to do. I feel like Genshin is obsessed with only making really unique content for it's unique universe, at the risk of that content not always being fun. The bland tower defense and flying challenges come to mind.

I remember the 2.2 event clear as stone, bloody heck, that was the peak of Genshin when I played it as a kid. Labyrinth Warriors was such a fun gameplay mode, but because of secondary school I missed out a bunch on it, and when I was able to come back to Genshin, the event ended. Definitely the most miserable time, for a while my one feedback was literally 'rerun of Labyrinth Warriors' but sadly, nothing from Genshin, but TCG. It was so fun though - no annoying dialogue, just dungeons and straight up fun exploration. You can choose where you want to run on the floor, and even get consequences for stepping on dangerous tiles (cursed tiles I think they were called). Definitely the most I ever enjoyed Genshin. Exploration is definitely addictive with its vibrant colors, the only thing I'm scared of is running into a side quest where I have to hear Paimon's monologue for a straight hour.

I have consistently mentioned bringing back this event or at least another iteration of it on their surveys and it’s nice seeing a CC talk about it. The only reason I can think of as to why we don’t have it back is that a good part of their team is hyper focused on developing Natlan, Khanreiah, and whatever’s after both of them. Alternatively, a way to integrate it into the world that isn’t too hand fisted Personally I find it more appealing and engaging than Simulated Universe.

We never got additional endgame content because the base average player is stupider than stupid and genuinely believes they can put 3 ATK pieces on their Raiden and call them "Mostly built". The actual population that even does spiral abyss consistently is probably like 10%. And the people who actually clear Abyss with 36 stars is probably closer to like 5%. That being said, when I saw Simulated Universe for the first time i immediately went "Holy shit its like that one Genshin event we had". Not knowing it was also similar to something Honkai Impact has. It would definitely be welcome if they bring something like this back as a permanent game mode after they finish all their recent QoL patches that seemed to be purely aimed at bringing up the skill floor of casual players from the bottom of the Primordial Sea.

I loved Labyrinth Warriors... And Misty Dungeon used to be quite fun too! But all the latest events with a seemingly similar concept lack the dungeon part for some reason? Was someone giving feedback that they don't like running around collecting buffs and trying to avoid debuffs? Now similar events are barely different from regular domains, you enter, do a couple of additional challenges that are right there if you want - or go straight to the main challenge that is, again, right there. No map, no exploration, no rogue enemies hiding in the corners, no cursed floors, no fun...
