Around 1600, the medieval city became a 'modern' fortress. The Eighty Years' War was then in full swing and the fortress had to protect Gorinchem against the Spaniards. In the Disaster Year of 1672, Gorinchem became an important fortified city in the Old Dutch Waterline. Gorinchem also remained a strategic stronghold in the New Dutch Waterline. Military life left a lasting mark on the garrison town. Even today, the fortress is the largest authentic fortified city in the Netherlands!
