I love rewatching sprint finish video to isolate on various riders. You really learn about how to teach sprint tactics. In my younger days I was a lead out man for a team in SoCal who did battle with teams like 7-Eleven, so I have my scars and stories! In this case, it’s easy to isolate Milan-he’s huge and wears the Ciclamino. He does a great job to navigate to the front solo (he chooses the rail) but better to watch earlier how he LOST his lead out. But isolate Merlier and you’ll see some extraordinary work-he has a white helmet with black stripe down the middle. He pushes a HUGE gear in the finale and stays sheltered until he makes his move up his right, just nipping a closing Milan. Timing is everything, but navigating the final kilometer and the last straight is so hectic and filled with power, speed, and drama for each rider. Pick ANY rider in the top five and isolate on him. Crazy way to make a living! Hat’s off to those guys. 😅

How do you feel about Aniolkowski’s work this Giro, he never has a leadout but always manages to find himself in a good position with 4 top 10 finishes, someone to watch in future races?

I especially like seeing the helicopter view of the sprint from above. It makes it so much easier to see who is where, and how it all unfolds. Yes, Milan drifted back after that left-hander, then was a bit boxed in until after the final right turn. The fact he still ended up in a very close 2nd place goes to show how strong he is.
@tommyrq180
@tommyrq180 Месяц назад
@@lloydhlavac6807 In my experience, the absolute master of navigating those final kilos was Peter Sagan. Watch some of those helicopter views and see how an absolute magician does his thing. Especially the 2017 World Championship road race in Norway. How he stayed with that bunch in the final very difficult kilometers and prevailed to win was to me, something special. Again, isolating just on him provides a unique perspective. Just my two cents. 😉
@tommyrq180
@tommyrq180 Месяц назад
@@murzyn_official Very perceptive! I commented on his performance when he took second recently on stage 13, listing it as a masterful job of solo navigation through sprint mayhem. And Stanislaw’s not a big guy, I think he goes 150 pounds (68 kilos) and just under 6’ (1.81m). Today he ended up 5th in that very, very fast, chaotic sprint with, best I can tell, very little Cofidis help. He scored UCI points in 5 stages already. I’ll take another look at his navigation of the final surge and see how he did it. Thanks for the vector!

People complain about "boredom" due to the superiority of Pogačar. It is not his fault that the other teams have other figures who have planned to take care of them so that they participate in the Tour. I prefer the spectacle of the Slovenian to the Sleepy Giros of Roglič-Geraint, Hindley-Carapaz and Bernal-Caruso where the spectacular route overwhelmed the cyclists. The best has always been the hobby and the landscapes. That is undebatable. In the 1914 Giro, Alfonso Calzolari surpassed Pierino, both Italians, by 1h 57'26", we are not going to ask that of Pogačar because the sport has become professional. But he has two stages left to surpass Ivan Basso's record in this century ( CSC) of 2006 when he surpassed the Spanish José Henrique Gutiérrez (Phonak) by 9'18" and Gilberto Simoni (2 Giros and a stage in the Tour and Vuelta) with 11'59". If we think that this does not happen in the Tour de France, last year we saw how Vingegaard surpassed Pogačar by 7'29" and Adam Yates by 10'56". Becoming the second largest difference of the century. Only surpassed by Vincenzo Nibali's triumph in 2014 where he surpassed Jean Christophe Péraud by 7'37" and Thibaut Pinot by 8'15". Many quickly forget that the Tour had 4 stages left over when the Dane finished it off. And in the 2023 Vuelta a España itself at Angliru, thanks to social networks, the press and fans who have never seen cycling, they put an end to the competition when, through a statement from Visma, they gave the victory to Sepp Kuss. Again 4 stages that were left over. To enjoy the superiority, the landscapes and the fans...there is no other choice. Cycling lovers there will continue to watch the sprint stages, see if the breakaways arrive or with the hope that something epic will happen like the 2018 Giro where Froome, Domoulin, Pinot (abandoned in the last stage due to a knee injury), Miguel Ángel López and Simón Yates gave us a great show. Also those of Nibali-Chávez or Nairo-Urán that are fresh in memory. Nor are the few differences synonymous with spectacle, the 2023 Giro where Roglič defeated Geraint by 14" is the eighth smallest difference in the history of the GV and no one remembers it as epic. I remember the Slovenian fans as the best of the time trial final climb. The smallest difference in the Giro has been between Florenzo Magni and Ezio Cecchi in 1948 with 11". Many mention the 1989 Tour where Greg LeMond defeated Fignon by 8". But GV's record is in the 1984 Vuelta a España where Èric Caritoux beat the Spaniard Alberto Fernández by 6"

You're actually the ONLY person that has pointed out what I keep saying in my comment above. Everyone is saying Milan this and Milan that and they've counted Merlier out but Merlier is a tactician and that's why he's a GREAT sprinter. Better than Milan BECAUSE of his technical approach to the sprints. Milan is going to have to learn. Milan just counts on his size and ability to put out massive watts. That's just not enough if you want to one of the GREATS!!! I won't say that he's not fast tho. The watts he can pump out is remarkable but as far as a tactician, he's not got much of a technical approach to the sprints 🤘🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

What a revelation I just had with Tim Merlier's statements. I naively thought that if in a sprint stage a runner jumped ahead it was to surprise the sprinters or make other teams go to the expense of chasing and this had been discussed but when not even the Belgian understands what Alaphilippe wanted to do, I discover that not even good communication between teammates exist.

@kennykaniff
@kennykaniff 22 дня назад
@@soulripper31 💯 absolutely correct!! Merlier was my main pick for this Giro. Everyone was and is saying "Milan is a better sprinter than Merlier" but that's just not true if you ask me. First of all Merlier has more wins than ANY OTHER RIDER so far this season (Pogi actually is tied with him now). Secondly, Merlier won 3 sprints and Milan won 3 sprints so how can you even say Milan was the better sprinter at this Giro? Only because he won the points classification is why everyone seems to think Milan is better but that's a bit ridiculous to me. Take the points out of the equation and they both won the same amount of stages. Milan MAY be faster (right now) but he's not better. He is tactically deficient!! He relies on his ability to put out these massive numbers in a sprint but doesn't have the skills needed to be a tactician which is what makes a GREAT sprinter! It takes more than just speed to be GREAT. So at the end of the day it's just crazy to say Milan is the better sprinter. On paper Merlier has more wins this season and if you look just at this Giro they both have same amount of wins so I don't understand people's logic. They can't be logical about it and most are just biased cos Milan is their favourite sprinter. I also have a favourite sprinter (not Merlier) but I have the common sense to admit that he just doesn't have what it takes anymore unfortunately 🤘🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
