All normal procedures are memory items so the checklist should be completed after everything is set. It is a checklist not a do list where normal procedures are concerned. If required function is carried out during the checklist it means that item had been forgotten, or missed, and the checklist had done its work to ensure it was set.

Been watching you for a long time, but we all know that Kim is the star of the channel now ;) Good job Kim! We all knew you could do it. You have the community, and more importantly, Baron Pilot, by your side. I can see and hear BP's influence in your training. I'm sure he's more proud of you than we are. Outstanding!

You are doing great! Just remember to follow your checklist! As a CFI myself I train my students on a flow follow by a checklist model. On our "Before Take Off Checklist" it states "Doors/Windows.....Locked/Latched." Looks like you did it on the first take off but let the nerves get to you on the second one. Double check and triple check if you need to but before crossing the hold short line be sure your checklist is 100% complete. On the last landing DO NOT BE AFRAID TO GO AROUND! Get comfortable and proficient with go arounds. Stable approach and landing in the touchdown zone and centerline should be must otherwise go around and try again. Don't set yourself up for a runway excursion. Keep up the fantastic work! Practice makes perfect and boost in confidence. Cant wait for the next video. Love the journey.

I am never ashamed when I have to do a go around. If the site picture looks wonky, I go around. Ps. It's so hot here in California that I have left the windows open. No big deal. Maybe it was hot. You can fly with the windows open per the POH. It's just the extra noise from the window.

Go-arounds can be disastrous for pilots who don't practice them (even if just chair-flying them) often enough, so +1's to those saying to not be afraid to do them (perhaps after a few reviews with your CFI, but you're probably already doing that and we're just not seeing the vids here). "CRAM, CLIMB, CLEAN, [CLICK for IAPs], COMMUNICATE!!" I have to remind myself of this every single freakin' time I decided to do a go-around, and it works!

It is so fantastic to see you cleanly and calmly talking yourself through EVERYTHING! You are absolutely in command of that aircraft. You know everything you need to do before you need to do it, you're organized, staying ahead of the airplane, making good decisions (the midfield cross to get a better idea of how to head into an unfamiliar runway at an unfamiliar airport is a good example), and ya. So what if your takeoffs and landings aren't perfect. In one sense, saying "that sucked" is good... always room to improve, but in another sense, don't be too hard on yourself either. For where you are in your training, you're doing great!

Good onya young lady. It is educational, informative and entertaining to follow your progress on this rewarding life journey. This retired geezer would suggest that finding the way to be confident and comfortable in that solo journey is the secret to personal happiness. And at the end of the day, YOU only gotta make YOU happy.

Each time I watch is that walk down my own memories. Those nerves you talk about, knew em well, but as I continued they faded back. Be careful of being hard on your self. I am/was very critical at times on even what others would have said "decent landing" that critical aspect feeds back to the nerves. Watch a couple of videos where ATPs bounce a jet and say "on one is perfect". I got to say it is nice to fly today with all the electronic aids. ADSb takes some of the worry away and moving maps helps take some stress off the navigation, but I LOVED that you still noted and timed way points. Charts and timing won't run out of juice 🙂 You continue to grow as a pilot and the most brave thing you do is post your journey on this site. I look forward to the long solo cross country.

As so many have said in comments before me, you really did great Kim. You recognized that your initial Soft Field T.O. wasn't what you wanted and did a much much better one on your take off to return to home base. You worked yourself through every aspect as you should. Really a great job. You get better with each flight. You will see that one day very soon it will all come together, and you'll love it...lovin the videos..thanks so much for sharing with us all. moose

As you progress becoming more comfortable in your flying it comes with time. Well on your way to being a very competed pilot. I am 80 and felt the same way as you do now when I started flying in 1973. Do not fly anymore and always enjoy you young people taking up the challenge. Best to you always.

Hey Kim, I was actually inspired to start my PPL, back in Feb this year, at age 50 from your early videos. Today I am at 30 hours, soloing the circuits and in a week or so will be doing solos further away. It's nice to see your journey because you are a little further ahead than me. Like you, I still have the shakes after every landing ( good or bad landing, dual or solo ). It's funny, because I am confident getting into the circuit, I am confident that I know how to land the plane safely, on the final approach and landing and am feeling good and my landings are all pretty consistent now ( except when there is strong crosswinds... I have work to do there ). And despite having confidence the skills my instructors have taught me, my hands are still shaking after every landing. Lols I am still making minor mistakes, tracking the center line on take-off and landing is one of my current focus - I am OK, but just not consistent.
@jeffbekeris
@jeffbekeris 9 месяцев назад
Kim, you greased the first landing. Your next ‘soft-field,’ TO you got that right rudder in and held the centerline. Really nice work. I think we could all feel your new solo pilot intensity. Keep working on it to build confidence. Thanks to Mr. Baron Pilot for the great captures and editing. Brains and beauty, EPIC. You’re doing great! 👍👍😁

Soft field takeoffs came in use to me when I had a heavy load one day. I set 10% flaps then used a long displaced threshold to begin my roll. My plane (a Cessna 172 hawk XP) lifted off smartly and the departure was uneventful. I had four people on board with all their heavy and oversized baggage. Since I had a long flight, the fuel burn equalized the over weight conditions and I learned a lesson that day. Don’t let anyone talk you into bringing more luggage than you should carry! Oh yea, everything went okay but, it could have gone very badly.

I knew this was going to be good, after the first 30 seconds or so, because the confidence in your voice was obvious. It's great that you recognize each tiny error, and fix them, even though nothing you did was "life threatening". You're perfecting your skills, as we all do, and that's the key. Great job, and we're all happy you're sticking with it! :)

Nice work, I'm sure you are probably past this, but on short final I don't like the nose swinging back and forth, I keep it parallel and use the aileron to stay on centerline. Keep the aileron in until you taxi off the runway for crosswinds. It took me a little bit after I got my certificate to perfect crosswinds, a good scare made me find religion on it. But better off to just do it and not have a scare. You look like a great pilot, excellent work!
