Two of the four warning lights are taller than usual for better visibility because of a humped bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal. The two alarms at this crossing both sound almost the same which is quite unique.
Both the road and rail line through Thatcham are busy. The crossing is usually lowered for more than 30 minutes every hour, leading to congestion on the roads approaching the crossing. Multiple concerns from the council have been raised about the efficiency and traffic problems regarding this crossing. A study into constructing a bridge to replace the crossing was declared not to be financially viable.
