Very very nice, Michael. The price tag is actually quite understandable to me because of the pure functionality and upgradable path this DAC can have either through the firm ware or the word clock. :). It is truly amazing and I wish you 15 years of musical enjoyment…ok maybe 20. 😊

I listened to the Lina stack at CanJam 2023 in NYC driving the Nutopia. It was probably the most satisfying headphone experience I’ve heard and I’m listening to a Holo stack driving a Susvara.

Just hooked up a Zen Air Blue to aa vintage Kenwood KR-2400....and OMG, it sounds gud! It connects flawlessly, never dropped signal, exceeded my expectations. I replaced a 1Mi B03Pro (ESS Sabre dac) , but the Zen must has a different Sabre dac+electronics. It sounds bigger, livelier and just more engaging sound stage...My vote for best budget BT streamer/dac under $100! I admit, I was skeptical that it woud be so gud!

I tried the DCA stack with the Caldera at CanJam and I thought it was an awesome combo. The clock is nice when you A/B, but I don't think it is a make or break type of change. I can't afford that DAC right now, but I'm really enjoying the Gustard R26 which also direct streams MQA. Hopefully MQA doesn't disappear now. I do think it can sound cleaner on streams vs CD quality.

Wow! Hey Michael, remember how you said my U12t was surpassed by other IEMs with more "exotic materials?" Well i just discovered a new IEM! It costs $22,000, but it has the best sound in the world because it has 1DD for base located with an acoustic chamber made out of rhinoceras horn, 6 BA drivers, 2 estats and 2 bone conducters all within a housing made from a sea turtle shell, chosen for its unique resonant properties. The cable is wrapped in baby seal skin. This reduces microphonics while having amazing hand feel. All these exotic materials equate to the best sounding IEM ever made! They are only making 100 of them due to limited supplies and other reasons.

I owned the U12T way back 136 episodes ago. Great IEM. Just because there are better now, doesn’t mean the old one is bad. Seal skin? Let me know how it sounds! LOL

Problem with Lina is dCS don't want to bring Apex to it, nor do they want to bring the higher frequency mappers that Bartok 2.0 has.

Michael made the right decision. I had a Holo May KTE in my system last year for 5 months. I wanted to like it. I tried every input, I tried every setting and feature that it had it never sounded right. I bought a Holo red to try to get the May KTE so that I would like it. The Holo Red helped a lot using the USB to I2S but not enough to beat my previous DAC a Bryston BDA 3. I still own the Holo Red. I now use the Red on my office desk system. Finally I said enough is enough and I put back my BDA-3 back into in to my system and I said right after the first note; thank god. I have listened to couple of systems with the DCS Lina DACS and two more systems with DCS Bartocks one Bartock with the APEX and one without. All 4 of those systems I listened to sounded great. I put on a lot of ear time one system in particular in January of 2024 and the DCS is clearly better than the Holo May. R2R DACS create an illusion of sense of space and air but it is not real. Running digital information through a resistor ladder is not the best way to convert digital to an analog signal. No matter how close you match the resistors and how close you space the resistors you will have nothing but timing errors. Ladders on a silicon chip are much better because the tolerance cannot be matched as tight of tolerance on a printed circuit board as in a silicon chip. Even though DCS calls it a ring DAC it is really a an FPGA that is programmed on a programmable silicon chip.

It's a very good DAC, but he probably should've picked MM Tambaqui or MSB Discrete. Weiss is good, but worse than those and May is too. Tambaqui kind of combines the benefits of sound of both May & Dave. And MSB line, unline DCS, also has this organic/analog signature of Holo, with MSB Select II probably being the currently best DAC?

I don't recall another clock with 2 internal timing cycles for 44.1 and 48k. There's a lot going on inside the DCS. Maybe not $7000 worth, but it's definitely not an ordinary sub-$1k clock. Though I should see if my Apogee Big Ben works with it. Could be a fun experiment.
