After travelling in countries such as Spain and France, the UK's rail infrastructure looks ancient. High speed rail must happen, and it needs to go beyond HS2. In Spain, the country would fall apart without it's AVE network.
@YN-io6kj
@YN-io6kj 3 года назад
The problem in the uk for these projects aren't money or the ability to do them. Theres a reason our rail infrastructure looks so ancient and its done on purpose. Many people who live outside the cities do not want any change and want the countryside left untouched. Making rail expansion very difficult and costly as you litterally have to buy out entire communities.

HS2 is absolutely brilliant for growth in the UK. However, I think overall, it is a poor waste of money. I used to intern at HS2 HQ in Birmingham a few years back. The project will definitely go over budget and over time. For example, national rail and HS2 are having problems in Crewe because the signalling is different for both trains. This will cost a lot of money but one company has to pay for it. The whole situation is just too bureaucratic. I think that money for HS2 should be invested in better rolling stock, electrifying the whole railway network and re-nationialising the railway. This would be a far better outcome for everyone as it will drive prices down and more people can use the railway system. Just my two-cents.

Digging a trench and laying a tunnel for the Hyper Loop through the mud of the North Sea between UK and Germany would become another phantastic project. London has 12 to 15 and the area around Hamburg and Bremen has 4 to 5 million inhabitants. I feel the necessity of shortening the time for travellling should be a major goal.
@Alan_Hans__
@Alan_Hans__ 3 года назад
The hyperloop is something that will never happen. Generating and maintaining a vaccuum is quite difficult. Trying to scale that up to hundreds of km long just can't happen. Conventional high speed rail is much more effective, safer and will actually work.

Someone should be held accountable for even allowing such a thing to go ahead, and then balloon so massively. It's actually not quite accurate to speak of the UK. Nearly all the big infrastructure projects are based in England. That's one of the reasons for the rising separatism in Scotland, Wales and N.I. The gouvernment is investing Billions in London and the rest of Southern England while the rest of the nation feels left behind. And that's why the UK will break apart within the next 10 years.

If there was a UK wide referendum on this, the majority of the country would vote in favour of breaking the Union. The government know this and we will never get a chance to vote.

True, however it is really difficult to justify large infrastructure projects in the Celtic fringes just due to the economics of it these areas are highly mountainous and underpopulated, England alone accounts for over 80% of the population and development there is where spending provides the most efficient gains, Wales and Scotland meanwhile have pretty adequate infrastructure networks given their population sizes whilst you cant say the same for most of England, especially the north.

That's a good thing. I'm a Brexit voter and the break up of the UK is the next logical conclusion. More sovereignty, and I think all nations within the British isles will benefit from splitting from eachother. Free free England 👍😈

Infrastructure was what I advised my friend in Indonesia to run on when he asked early in 2014 if he should run for President & which party. I answered "yes", "PDI-P" & stated investors will not come if their products are going to take many hours to go a relatively short distance, tourists won't come if they can't get around easily, poverty won't be reduced if investors don't boost the economic growth with real full-time jobs. Everything must be in place first, to attract the right investors. He followed my advice, but it is a pity the only way to get the funding was to allow China to play a major role in the MRT, LRT & VFT Rail Projects, including new rolling stock from Local Company INKA & diesel Locomotives from Switzerland & USA. There are also the many motorway projects throughout Indonesia, Airport & Ferry Port Upgrades, Jakarta Stadium & MotoGP Track, as well as Disney World near Bogor, south of Jakarta.

“Cost estimates have ballooned from $27 billion to $147 Billion”, ok I understand it may be harder to cost estimate something as large and complex as this, but when the cost estimates are that far of there is some infrastructure, planning and cost consulting companies that should go through there routines and quality checks because that is just mind blowing off cost estimates, almost like one could wonder if the just took that first estimate out of thin air, and they probably didn’t do that, so somewhere along the line it failed.

What he didn't mention was the original figure was for a fairly basic line between Manchester, Birmingham and London. The scope has since changed to include a whole other branch to the east, kilometers of new tunnels not in the original spec, a substantial amount more environmental mitigation works and the cost of brand new and upgraded stations plus the actual trains into the headline budget figure. Elsewhere stations and rolling stock procurement have been treated as separate projects with separate budgets.

I think people are kicking off because the new trainline will require a lot of land, the fact the British government want to build over 100,000 new homes on this tiny island over the next decade as well, we will not have any land left to grow our own food. We are going to become more reliant on other countries for supplies and France are threatening to block our main supply route because they want access to our fishing waters. We need to massively slow down the population rate on this tiny island before it turns real ugly.

HS2 is a giant failure of imagination and ambition! Instead of going for an ambitious system integrating current transport networks and serving as many as possible (with say, a driverless automated motorway system or a train made of pods which can attach and detach when ever and where ever needed so it never needs to stop) or a cost-effective design like reopening the old central line (which is about 80% intact, disused and would cost only about 5B) our government has opted for a supped up Victorian relic which will never achieve its speeds for any meaningful length of time, pass by more places than it serves, will never reach 'the north' due to costs and will serve only the few wealthy enough to buy a ride on this green toy, so they can feel good about themselves :(
@harbl99
@harbl99 3 года назад
Agreed. I saw a factoid recently that the price of the project has inflated so much that you could pave a track from London to Birmingham with solid gold, and still spend less than the cost of HS2. It's an absurd white elephant. "But it mean I can get to Birmingham to London 20 minutes quicker." Just leave 20 minutes earlier. Job done. I saved you £100bn.

Most of Phase One of HS2 is using what parts of the old grand central railway... Stop thinking of HS2 as a stand along 'NEW' Railway line. HS2 if was drawn on the route diagrams - non geographically correct (non are geographically correct)... you would see it is a purpose built pair of high speed rails from Euston to Birmingham... Wigan, Manchester etc. It is removing the High Speed Trainsets from the existing, running at max capacity WCML to the HS2 rails. HS2 could not be constructed immediately adjacent to the WCML as there is NO room anywhere along the WCML. Get a paper map of the UK railway network, use a marker pen, draw a line parallel to the WCML from Euston to Birmingham International airport (phase 1). Draw it to the left of the existing WCML route with one extra station at OOC (old oak common). The Tory UK Government, instead of drawing it adjacent to show it's real usage and worth... continue to draw the route along a path halfway to WALES!
@geoffreythorberg2580
@geoffreythorberg2580 3 года назад
PS. HS2 should have been designed and constructed to be Quad tracked - Especially in Phase One! If there is not the demand as govt always claim when they design and construct things for 1921, not 2021...by the time HS2 opens it will lack sufficient capacity. 1. construct as quad track from day one of shovel in ground or 2. construct the ground/tunnels, viaducts, etc for quad tracking... with dual track laid now and when it opens and is overwhelmingly insufficient for capacity requirements, it will be cost far less and only take a few months to lay another 150km of dual / double tracking and OHLE. No one in the current so called UK government is a Scientist! They lack vision on anything that will take longer than a fortnight to accomplish. Bozo will have seen something else Shiny, Glittery = and be totally captivated by it. The mentality of three year olds.
