These guys are giving some solid advice, I recently went back to school for cybersecurity at my local community college. I had no previous IT experience, but while attending school I kept applying for IT positions, and internships to get experience. Little did I know that getting an internship is the most critical thing I could have gotten. within my first semester I got a paid internship as a Security Engineer. I'm still learning something new everyday and I keep telling my classmates to apply for any and all internships to avoid the cliché college struggle.
Thats true but not an excuse not try to and get in the field. I actually plan on branding myself this year. I dropped out of community college and worked in geek squad, but fast forward, now I have a 200k devops job. Still no degree as a black man who looks and is from the hood. You're going to run into roadblocks but the key is to never quit.
It really does. I’m 30 year trucker trying to transition into something like this. Doesn’t look it easy but looks possible. You guys got good info that’s relatable 💪🏿
This is one of the best podcasts and interviews that I've ever seen! I feel enlightened! I am really excited for the future in Cybersecurity! I know that there's a tough road ahead, but I'm up for the challenge. Thank you both for your tech and business knowledge. Appreciate yall 🙌🏿
I am studying for my CompTIA A+ right now and plan on changing my career from Armed Security to Cybersecurity. I have minimal tech experience and knowledge and a degree in music performance so I am at a major disadvantage. Im sticking to the solid route of leveling up little by little, networking, getting my resume reviewed by someoke in the direct field I want, and educating myself as I go. I know it won't be easy, but I figure in 3 years I can be making more than the $40k a year I make and be in a better position with Cybersecurity. I'm seeing networking and a great resume are key, and also what skills you personally learn (tech and soft skills). I see so many successful people in tech, and I see it isn't easy!
@@Officialprodbytreybeats exactly. For someone completely new to information technology the A+ could be beneficial in terms of providing a foundation. The cert is just useless in the grand scheme of things. The Sec+ on other hand will at least put you in the realm of respectability. Lastly, when it’s time to study for the Sec+ use Get Certified Get Ahead by Darril Gibson. It’s the only book you’ll ever need.
Just found this channel omg 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾very dope concept and comical I’m just joining the tech field so this very cool and inspirational self reflection is real ✔️keep grinding bros
Happy i stumbled upon this, my kind of podcast. I'm only in the intro but got my brain ticking. I don't think you need a passion to make it work, but to reach your peak potential you do. I'm red team focused. I personally am a bit selfish too and I think that helps. Selfish in the sense of I want this skillset, it's something I find strokes my ego a bit being able to hack into things lol I don't go around boasting, buuuuut the pride is definitely there. And I want to improve for me. Money is secondary to it. Of course i want fair compensation but the title, ego, skillset, all that stuff has a big stake in my drive.
Networking is tough in Louisiana. I still was able to land roles and even get out of state remote roles. But I want to move to Texas, y'all boys got the juice over there lol !

I really wish I knew about the transferring credits back in forth in college. I have a BS in sociology and I'm in a Cybersecurity Policy and Compliance Masters right now. I really wish I would've gotten a bachelor's instead. This was such a great podcast episode!
Word! I took 2 pre-requisites unnecessarily because the counselor misread my transfer docs. If I knew I could dodge pre-reqs all together that would have saved me so much time and money.
They’re story is so funny, cause I’ve been in the space for 5 years and had similar experiences….😂 I was weak when they said they built a million dollar soc and got laid off…Similar situations 😂 God speed and best to you both.
Great pod!! Just realized we have the same barber lol but I’m currently enrolled in a bootcamp and have my sec plus and cysa plus working on my network plus now what would be a good road map to becoming a security engineer?
@@TechTualChatter I did interview at Oakley once, they asked about 5 questions that even with these skills I couldn’t really answer… I got smoked that interview… then didn’t have the luxury of waiting or be able to get better…. I needed money to live so that’s probably how I got into these lower paying jobs…
@@TheBlackmanIsGod the job search is like dating just because one woman upsets us doesn’t mean the next one will. If you want some one on one help book a call with me
I’m actually in the process of studying for A+ right now, and I will be taking the Network+ & Security+ afterwards for the full cert stack, so would all 3 be more efficient for a decent paying entry level IT position, or would one be enough to get my foot in the door?
hey man i live up in lewisville crazy hearing y’all talk about the general area i’d really appreciate if i could talk to you sometime i’m 23 , would a sec+ then aws cloud thing be a good first move
Just finished my master's degree in maths for 2-3months ago. Have 2yoe working with databases sql etc., and I know the basics of programming modelling etc. Currently landed a job as a data scientist, but I honestly don't think this is what I am doing. Most of my time is spent monitoring networks by manually clicking, I feel like a robot mouse clicker dude. Once that is done I have 1-2 hours per day doing sql. Do you have any tips on where I can go from here? I try to learn more about analysing pcap files with wireshark etc. but it is really not needed at my current job since they are trying to dumb all my tasks down to literally nothing.
How much experience did you have to get an internship? I'm majoring in Cybersecurity and am trying to get an internship with no experience. So how do I stand out in the crowd of resumes? Please help.
I graduated with a BA degre in visual communications, Interactive Web Development in 2012, worked as a web guy since then and have never even made more than $20/hr……… with alll the knowledge it took to get here, it seems I have to learn sooooooooooooooooooo much more knowledge even still if I want to work in this industry how do you progress how do you learn fast enough to stay relevant??
I’m about to graduate from a community college with a cybersecurity certificate, transferring to uni but I’m not sure weather to major in CIS or cs… thoughts?
Great content and helpful information. I went on your website to look into doing a consultation, but unfortunately my work schedule interferes with the posted times that are available. I'm open to suggestions. I would like guidance in the right direction.
Im a dump truck driver looking to change careers into IT. But my biggest question is is it possible to get into tech as a felon? Its been 7-8 years since my charge but should i fully pursue this or am i wasting my time...
I graduated in 2012 I learned to work with HTML, CSS, JavaScriot, AJAX, ActionScript 3.0( before it died), a little my SQL and A little PHP, and still have never even been able to make $20/hr
@@TechTualChatter the expections that I always run into is to be like a senior developer for less than jr developer pay, I could never find jobs that wanted to pay a serious adult wage.
@@TechTualChatter yet you guys are on here speaking like anyone can be a developer…. That’s my whole thing….. not everyone has the same brain and it’s like computer people don’t understand that, and expect everyone to be able to code and understand everything at the same level, and if not then there’s no room for you!!! I gotta screen shot your response!
@TechTualChatter There are some benefits like compensation for commute, meal vouchers, hospitalization/health insurance (mediocre in Belgium) but it really depends where you are. Here in Belgium you have crazy taxes where almost 3rd of my pay goes to and at the same time the cost of living is skyrocketing everywhere.
Not gonna happen. Don’t mean to burst your bubble but why would a company hire an intern with no experience and 0 skills when there’s thousands of potential workers straight out if college with a bachelors to choose from.
If i already have around 4 yrs relative experience with networking am i able to go straight into a cyber job? Will be done with my Bachelor's in a year.
@@TechTualChatter I'm in Controls Automation. I have the foundational network knowledge. Configuring VLans, Servers, network segmentation (as we never want the controls network on the corporate public network), network switches ( port security, use putty to check comm / packets, and scripting), configuring user profiles/access, IP and subnetting. Also use Wireshark alot for analyzing network issues. Also deal a lot with setting up DHCP servers but not so much with DNS as we access everything by IP or software. I want to make the transition after I get my certs but am not sure if I'd have to start at that bottom in help desk or be able to go directly to a security role.
Question: when doing a resume in cybersecurity should you list the siems, edr tools you used at previous or current company when applying or is this not allowed due to you disclosing another companies security tools?
I’m in consulting right now and want to get out. This place has been stressing me out. I Have a background in web development and automation. Feel like it’s hard for me to find anything smh.
@@TechTualChatter I’m trying bro. It’s affecting my physical and mental health. Definitely going to do my research to increase my chances of getting a new job.
So does he have a bachelor’s degree to be at $500,000. Doing a Cybersecurity Bootcamp now. But I wanted to know if I need a 2 year degree or bachelors to even be considered for a position like him? Thank you. I enjoy hearing both of your perspectives.
He has a bachelor's, but what really got him his total comp is his experience in the field. Get your bachelor's, though & get an internship in cyber if that's where you want to end up to help you break into the field.
Does anybody have any recommendation on what’s the better position to go in within the tech world? I’m very very new to this, but have been looking on & off as I am interested in pursuing a career in tech. I know the most popular is cybersecurity, & I’m assuming that’s the most paid/sought out for? My question is what are other positions that are level to cybersecurity and just as sought out as well?
@@TechTualChatter "hate" .... arent yall tired of using that as a excuse when you cant back up claims that dont make sense. Lets be mature here. Not even FAANG after stock options is 500k most times. Youd have to be running a MSP or something similar to bring in that type of consulting bread
This is embarrassingly misleading. Y’all need to stop telling people this comp like it’s common and like anyone can do it. It’s not like that. This whole thing is a farce.
@@TechTualChatter I’m talking about this video and your other content. I’m 98% certain you’re leveraging the recent wave of hope among folks trying to ‘get into tech’ to fuel their very unrealistic idea of their shot (chance) at the bigger dollars. I’m not naive. You’re promoting the field strictly on the basis of earning potential, hence the emphasis you placed on TC. You’re not fooling everyone, my guy. Why not focus on what the work actually entails instead?
Chris, you've to know this isn't entry-level pay but people who are usually seniors or have years of experience. This is total compensation meaning your base salary+ stocks and bonuses.
