The $800 Super73 Knock-offs

Are the cheap super 73 knock offs on alibaba worth it? Here I give my view on these fake ebikes and whether or not I think they are a good deal for what they are.
Super73 frames have their advantages for custom builds and they look very nice. I wouldn’t trust the cheap components of the bikes from no name chines suppliers on alibaba. However this can all be upgraded and changed. I am more concerned over the things you can’t change like the head tube, bottom bracket, and pivot points.

I'm riding a DIY ebike, based on the Marin four corners frame. I wasn't a fan of any of the prebuilt bikes, or the brand names that lock you into their hardware/warrenty. It has the Grin tech geared Gmac regen hub motor. Just finished building it last night, the things rides like a dream, and I am now 100% beleiver in regen braking! Cheers!

I'm starting with a child's Razor electric motorcycle.. and replacing the motor and battery with a 5000w motor and 72v battery's. Should make for a hell of an e bike. Also the most important thing was I wanted something I could fit in the back of my hatchback and I can.

52V 1000W shunted DD hub drive on a 2003 Kona Coiler, absolutely love it. Basically a mellower version of your bike when it was DD only. I can't say there is much out there commercially available that impresses me or that can fly under the radar as well as this setup.

I ride a 48V 1000w front hub ebike I converted it myself. I took a voilamart 48V 1000w front hub motor and slapped it on a huffy single speed cruiser bike with a 48V 15ah battery. I'm 15 and it's how I get to work and back, I've been researching ebike everything over the past several weeks because I'm wanting to make a new one and a good one at that. I've even thought if I can get good at it then I can maybe sell some as well.

I got into ebikes with a BBSHD mid drive that I put in an old trek hardtail about a year ago. I like it for recreational riding with friends. But the bike I use the most is a XP 2.0 with a lot of battery and another motor up front. I use a 30 amp controller on both motors. It is heavy but great for errands with a big basket on the rack. I just use 48V batteries since I mainly wanted hill climbing ability and didn't need a lot of top speed. The 20 inch utility bike usually gets used a few times per day in good weather and I let other people use it if they want. The mid drive usually gets ridden a couple times a week and is only used by me. I enjoy the Lectric because it is easy to play with mods. The mid drive is less receptive to mods and easier to break with abuse so I have just run it with stock controller and 52V battery.

I was obsessed with building my own bike like yours. I even fantasized about getting a store-bought battery like what you have. I didn't want to spend any money though. I found this place that sells Surplus batteries and I'll make my own battery packs. So right now I have a I have a 17 year old aluminum frame Giant mountain bike converted to electric bike with a bbshd which I call a 1800 watt motor. I run it on a 15s configuration. Frankly I don't know why people call it 1000 watt motor it'll pull 1800 watts all day. So it's difficult to do that because it's impossible to find the hill and the gearing to pull that much power continuously.
@4GregF
@4GregF 2 года назад
You'll get more epic range if you only use the mid-drive as a PAS, and you don't use the throttle. Use your bikes gears. Low gear for starting, high gear for higher speeds. If you set the level of assistance lower, that will help a lot.

You can kill yourself at 25 miles an hour. A truck pulled out in front of me and I hit the brakes. The front tire locked up in the bicycle did a flip. Luckily I just broke my wrist, most people hit their head and either die or a quadriplegic. I was only doing 15 mph when I hit the brakes and the bicycle flipped. And no I did not get the front brakes first. Instinct tells ya to hit both brakes when a truck pulls out in front of you. The bike I was riding only had a top speed of 12 mph but I was going downhill.

@@5DNRG and a lot of stuff. Urgent Care didn't think I had insurance and refused to treat me. Took me a week to prove I had an insurance and get a cast on my wrist. During that time I've called several lawyers. They blame me because it's physics. Nothing can stop the bicycle from flipping at that speed. You hit the brakes you're going over the handlebars or the bicycle itself was simply flip. My brother suggested I unhook the front brakes, but if I did that, then they would blame me if I hit the truck. Seems thousands of people are injured on bicycles, but you never hear about it on the news, because it happens so often. The reason why these ebikes cost over $1,000 is they need to hire lawyers to keep from being sued from selling their death traps. The warnings on the bicycle said do not ride at night, tighten all bolt before riding and always wear a helmet. But no warning that said do not hit the brakes when a truck pulls out in front of you or the bicycle will flip. As I told people my story they kept asking if I was wearing a helmet, as if the helmet would have stopped me from breaking my wrist. I met a lot of people whose bicycles have flipped and it wasn't even a e-bike. I'm 64 years old and this is the first time I've ever heard of a bicycle flipping when you hit the brakes.

If the discussion is about the frame and custom build then for about the same $800 price tag (maybe a little bit more) you can pick up a 10 year old downhill bike. This will give you a sturdy frame, big suspension and brakes. You can put a dropper post for the seat and get into a better pedaling position. The bike will most likely fit on a bike carrier. The final weight will be much lower (mine is 60 lbs with the battery). And it’s easier to justify using it on bike paths vs a Super 73 type bike. Also my bias opinion is my build looks as good as a Super 73 though different.
@avocadotoast1050
@avocadotoast1050 2 года назад
Couple of issues I would imagine with DH bikes though would be the mounting position for the battery, in most cases you are essentially limited to a backpack which would make it harder to run higher voltage and capacity packs due to the weight you would be carrying. Secondly, the super slack geometry on them means the front fork wont work well on anything but descents and handling will be quite poor too. I think a mid travel bike would work better as a ebike conversion, ideally around the 140-160mm range as you can easily find frames with enough space to take at-least a 14ah 52v pack or something, only issue is they are usually more expensive due to demand. Keen to hear how you find your DH build goes as I wouldn't be averse to trying it out; there seem to be quite a few 5-10yr old bikes decently priced in my area and not much else if I wanted to try a FS setup with my middrive (which I do)
@chucknoob7041
@chucknoob7041 2 года назад
@@avocadotoast1050 You are correct, there are definitely some compromises I made. I used a 2013 Kona Operator and put a CYC x1 pro in the frame triangle and squeezed in an 8 amp-hour 52 volt battery. I carry a second battery in a pack for a total of about 850 Watt-hours. The front head angle is 64 degrees which is actually less slack than most modern Enduro bikes. The bike handles great at speed but the front wheel does tend to want to flop over at low speeds. It almost caught me once but I know to look out for it now. I plan on sewing a saddlebag that will go across the frame and follow the downtube. It will hold two 72volt batteries run in parallel for about 1800 Watt-hours; 2600 Watt-hours with the 52 volt batteries as backup. This will be for paths and fire roads type riding.

So I mentioned the bike that I have And how cheaply I was trying to Ebike. But I've ordered a Euranou Spectre. It should be here within the month. I know it's completely different approach but decided I'm going to be doing this for a while. And I have the cash I was just being cheap. Anyway that bike starts at $3,800 and I ordered the extra battery (2 battery config) which brings it up to $4,200. I'm convinced the motor that comes with it is basically a bbshd with torque-sensing. So I'm counting on a bike that has full suspension fat tires a 1.3 kilowatt hour battery pack and a Peak 1800 watt motor.

Look into getting a chain guide off of amazon(fixed my chain from popping off). Also you can use spacers to bring out the rear cog to perfectly line up with your front chainring. Should be very easy to do on a single speed. Cheers.

I’ve tried the chain stay guides on a previous fat bike build. Broke it, riding on rough trails after the 2nd use lol. On this particular build the bikes swig arm pivot, blocks how deep I can go on the crank sprocket for decent alignment. I used all of the ss spacers. The rear sprocket is very close to the end of the hub. I ordered the dmr chain tensioner and an extra bag of spacers. It wont be a perfect alignment but it’s as close as it can physically be.

I do appreciate the discussion cover my opinion is that the super73 is the dumbest possible look of an e-bike. I haven't set online and but from the sitting position it looks like it's basically a faux ebike. What I'm saying there is if you can't really pedal it without the motor it's basically like those pedal scooters of the 80s. Yes it has pedals but no you're not meannt to use them. Another reason I call it a scooter instead of a bike is that in no planet does a bike not have an adjustable height seat. In no planet does a bike place the petals in a place where they can't really be used. For that reason I really think the super 73 is not an e-bike. It is a knee scooter but not a bike. Again I point to the 1980s pedal-assist scooter. It was a scooter we all knew it it had pedals but it never fooled anybody.

I ride Lectric XP, Jujiced Scorpion, Juiced Hyper Scorpion and just recently purchased a C3Strom Astro Pro. My city and state is rather strict on ebikes motor size, top speeds, off road trail requirements etc. Bikes like Sur Rons won't fly in my state, nor would 60v and 72v systems or motors over 750w/1000w unless they meet DOT requirements and are licensed and registered. I now of a few people locally that have recently been ticketed for riding Ariel Grizzly that had a 72 volt system and Segway Sur On for not being street legal, registered and licensed, yet don't meet the state's class 2 or 3 ebike requirements. The more ebikes they see bombing around town doing speeds of 35+, the PD's are starting to clamp down. The mayor in my city is also clamping down on stand up scooters, some of which are zipping around at 40-50+ mph.

unfortunately I currently dont have an ebike. I am looking right now to find the right one for me for what I would be doing. The first ebike I want to get is a commuter ebike or an ebike that can get long range (min. 30+ miles: my job is 29 miles away) and can go off road as well. I do want a full suspension and fat tires. Great video and this style of emoped you are riding I have been looking at as well and the Super73 are expensive so I have been looking for alternates that have that moped style. I will def be getting an ebike, still trying to figure out which one though, a lot of cool looking bikes out there!!!!

What does the controller upgrade for? Does the rad have a throttle only mode?

I ride a pedego element V2 version blue color cost like 2500 bucks with the stuff I added to it, it's okay speed and power wise right now it is because I had the bike for a whole entire year but when I first had it I loved it, it was great speed and torque wise, but then I rode one of my friends e bike which was a g force zm, and it was 100 times better than mine speed, power, and comfort wise it felt like a miniature motorcycle not like a bicycle would I might be getting one for Christmas, so I guess time will tell if I get my dream e bike or not

E bikes are too heavy for rough trails just some ebikes like sur on can handle something like that and still it's meant to mimic a motorcycle performance but still come short, so for rough terrain, a mountain bike, ebikes for commute on relative smother surfaces , and then that's my opinion

Nice post OP! I just recently bought a Jetson Bolt Pro but am looking at possibly getting a Lectric 2.0 as a next one. Since you are living in NJ, I hope you dont mind me asking as to how much is the total cost to get that bike (including shipping, import fees, etc.) and how long did it take? Did the bike arrive without any damages? I haven't tried buying from Alibaba yet, but was just curious as there are some items there that I am considering purchasing but just didnt know how the process works or the costs. Thank you!

I ride a K2 ZED 1.0 26' x 2.4' Maxxis Holy Rollers 1500- 2000ish watt rear hub motor MQCON controller fully adjustable power and torque throttle curves 52v 20ah. I use to think you needed a higher voltage to go faster. This controller changed that or at least gives your motor its full potential.

I don’t have an Ebike , I’ve got an electric hyper scooter . I bought it 6 months ago and a week after the bylaws in my City were formed preventing these types of scooters from exceeding 25 kmh . I really regret paying the close to 5k on it now as every time I ride it I get harassed by police . I really wish I went with my gut instinct and got the Grizzly I was thinking of getting .

Not sure what the point of the super 73 is really? It's not adjustable to fit a rider properly for cycling so is it really just a moped pretending to be an ebike? I haven't ridden one though so maybe it's better than I imagine?
