Nice vid, i have ball joints to go on mine along with new arms, bearings etc..... i think now i will get a pair of hubs to paint and get the balljoints if still attached off 😂 great work, look forward to next vid 👍
Another R53 Cooper… they’re worth saving, and the more experience you gain the more likely you are to avoid previous pitfalls and spot good’uns when you see them. Good Luck! ❤️👍😎✅
I love your optimism. If I bought a good one it would make terrible TV 😁 I need to find a good middle ground. I may have my eye on one one already. 😜 Keep supporting me. I need advice and motivation. Thank you!!!
Good job you didn't give your wife that one... it's garbage.. never looked after. Most of these jobs like the ball joints frozen are using the right tools and experience. Keep at it mate. ❤
A number of ways to do the ball joint splitter fork type or bolt type, large steel tube between chassis and wishbone hammer sides of joint the pull bar down it will give up and free. 👍
The ball joint separated easily, in seconds actually. The stubborn Bit was the two discimilar metals had seized together inside the hub. Because I had separated the ball joint, there was no longer anything to prize against to lever it out. When it went it was a pleasant pop. Then FREEDOM, on to the next job ha ha
Good job! Get another Mini, they are fun and easy to work on. As for removing the balljoint, get a balljoint separator to make your life easier! It's basically just a big fork which you hammer between the joint and the hub.
The ball joint split just fine. I think it's in the background of the video. I used a variety to do that one and the track rod end. It was removing the unit itself from the hub where I got stuck. Small job turned big. Thank you for watching!!! I appreciate you
It wasn't clear how you were trying to get the ball joint off. I would have hit the hub around the ball joint with a hammer to shock it. Then using a long solid metal bar/pole lever the lower arm down, move the hub assembly clear, then knock out the ball joint from the hub.
Thank you for messaging. As I had separated the ball joint with a splitter it had damaged the lower thread. This prevented me from putting the nut back on (I had to remove the nut to get enough room for the splitter) due to the lack of nut I was then unable to leaver or use the lower arm to assist. Hindsight would say separate from the hub first. Always learning. It was properly seized in the hub though. It was always going to be a fight. New car bought, let's see what problems this one brings!!! Thank you again!!!
@@RRRCUK Ford Fiesta or KA? fiat 500? id think popular cars that people can have a go at themselves, or cars with a cult following such as Land Rover Defender
@@just.me.and.my.travels wow, definitely polar opposites there. I have never owned a defender. Could be a possibility for the future. Fork KA or Fiesta ST (or is that too new) great choices!! Thank you
I have thought about these. Fiesta ST might be within reach. I have seen the Focus ST but the problems I would inherit are looking costly. Thank you for your message 😊
This sounds like a great idea. I might have just secured the next project car. Quick flip......... Hopefully. R56 definitely on my radar. I don't know these at all. Learning all the way. Thank you
R53’s are knocking on a bit so tend to have a lot of bodywork and chassis issues but the R56 have terrible reliability issues the N14 engine is renown for being the very worst engine in any of the bmw minis.
The R53 is borderline classic car. If I put and R56 on too soon people may actually tell me off (it won't be the first) But never say never. I have a 12 month plan which may or may not involve minis 'plural' Thank again for your message
I’m just about to subscribe because at first it was frustrating watching you trying to get the ball joint off it’s ten minute job and penetrating oil is absolutely useless in that scenario if’s theirs no gap it can’t get in so just a waste of time then I realised just where you’re coming from and it’s quite interesting to see how it pans out 🤞
Thanks man. I make these mistakes so others don't have too. Ball joint itself is separate. It was the fitting corroded into the hub. Big challenge. I think next time it will be a 20 minute job. I will be prepared. Thank you!!
@@RRRCUK sorry a bit late replying but yeh even though I haven’t had anything to do with minis I can imagine they sell well especially to the ladies, think the timing belts could be an issue but not sure,I’d buy one for sure 👌
Timing chain isn't such a bad job. It can be quite exciting. The crank has a harmonic balancer on which I think requires a 'special' tool. Probably a purchase for the future? I may be looking at a mini in the near future. 😳
Apologies for the misconception. The ball joint split. I just couldn't remove the full assembly from the hub. But it split as easy as you like. I should have knocked it out of the hub first 😂😂😂
Previous owner was on the oil rigs. It stood between his breaks causing the brakes to rust and pit. It is probably the reason for the camera chain tensioner failing too. Irregular use!! Great observation. New video coming soon!!
I am lucky enough to work near this location. It is literally a few £ per month. Unheard of!! The driveshaft, with next to no grease around it's location. I can assume it was VERY recent. Changed out with parts given to me. A favour now owed. But no money changed hands. Fixed now and saved for another year of enjoyment!!
Hi, theirs a xr3i cabriolet going for 900 you could probably knock him down from that price ,would make a good long term project on a G plate somebody like you could do most of the work and make a profit its on ebay classic car section
AHH fantastic. I will definitely take a look. I do have a MK4 Series 2 RS Turbo build ongoing. Hampered by the weather right now. 20 + years old is my target aged car. The Mini just fell inside this. Thank you for watching 😊
@@adrianricketts8884I am looking to get some welding lessons. I am really not achieving the outcome I expected. Maybe welder set up? Maybe access or metal quality. But I need help either way. 😮
I guess I am too late (I know I am too late) chop the brake lines rather than undo, you are replacing them all anyway. Just remember the civic I se t you pics of 2 weeks ago. Nothing undid on there, every bolt as rusty and I chopped everything off. Heat and a wax crayon 😉
Tunnel vision, I was determined to undo them.. I don't do these jobs often enough. My torch isn't big enough for bolts. More soldering and heat shrink. I will be more prepared next time. I'm quite sure there will be another mini!! Thank you, I appreciate you
It turns out you can simply back out of a sale on eBay. Not ideal in my situation. Not even worth an argument if they can't read the item location. :(😕
@@kevinjohn725he has the backing to do anything he wants. I think his audience is different from where it all began. Good on him. He works hard for it I guess.
It most definitely is not. I get enjoyment from fixing things. It also clears my head from a busy 'work stress' it's my freedom. Never about profit. I appreciate your support 🙏🏼
The "copper" brake pipes are 10% nickel. The material is called "Kunifer". Pure copper would work-harden and fracture with vibration. This is also why stranded (not solid) copper wire is used in vehicles and why connections are crimped and not soldered. By the way, connections will last much longer if silicone grease is applied to them (including bulb holders, bullet connectors, Faston (spade) connectors, crimped connections and trailer sockets.
I am looking for these. I may have to get one in the near future. The purchase cost is a little out of reach for me right now. St150 is definitely one of the future classic hot hatches!!
I don't charge anything because I don't earn anything for it. Working on my own cars I don't charge myself.... If that makes sense. I want to encourage people to work on their own cars to avoid the expensive labour costs. Garages will charge £50-100 per hour. Making jobs like these unsustainable.
This car definitely kept me busy. Maybe it should have gone for scrap. What car should I get next? I'm considering Classic cars now over 20 years old. Thank you
