An illustrated reading of the poem, The Émigrée by Carol Rumens. The poem focuses on the memory of the narrator's home country which they left as a child, but seem to treasure in spite of the struggles and difficulties which caused them to leave it behind.
Rumens deliberately creates ambiguity in terms of the countries it describes, the age of the narrator and even the exact details of the city they came from. As such, it allows the poem to speak for all emigrants and leaves a powerful message about missing home, adapting to new cultures and the wider treatment of immigrants in their new home countries.
The Émigrée features in AQA's GCSE English literature power and conflict series; this reading could be used as an introduction for students studying it at GCSE or as a short revision recap to help gain an understanding and overview of the poem's message and meaning.
