Today I have a super quick lesson that you can implement in your playing immediately - especially if you play any amount of country music.
You probably know about the ‘country 2-feel’ bass line, right? Playing alternating roots and 5ths - it’s a country staple.
However, you may not know, there is a ‘mistake’ baked into this kind of country bass line, that’s just waiting to be made.
To the audience, this may not even register as a ‘mistake’. You could play a whole gig worth of country songs and do this on every song and the audience may not even notice.
The musicians you’re playing with though - that’s another story. The musicians that have been around the block a few times, they’ll definitely notice.
If you’re lucky, they might quietly and politely suggest you change your approach. If you’re unlucky, you could end up getting yelled at on stage. (This isn’t very likely though - in my experience, the best musicians are almost always the most kind and most gracious).
The next time you’re listening to some country music, listen to the bass part. Does it suffer from ‘premature articulation’? My guess is that it won’t! There are always exceptions to the rules though.
Good luck with the lesson and happy playing!
Cheers,
Luke
P.S. If you’re into figuring out HOW bass lines work, I highly recommend checking out my other video ‘The Only 4 TYPES Of Bass Lines You’ll Ever Have To Create’:
• The Only 4 TYPES Of Ba...
Not only will you learn to understand bass lines better, but how bass lines function within the context of a song. Once you know that, it’ll be a breeze to come up with your own bass lines for just about any song.

This is such a helpful tip. Whilst I was practicing for an upcoming country gig today, I noticed that the bassist in the Alan Jackson song 'Chattahoochee' does exactly this - doubling the root note or filling with a passing phrase. This is a good stylistic nuance I totally didn't know and will definitely take on board. Cheers!

CORRECTION: At the 1:22 mark, the chord progression shown on screen should only have 1 bar of F instead of 2. The 2nd bar of F is actually a C chord. The whole progression would be: |C |C |F |C | |C |C |G |G |

This kept happening to me when my band performs "Boys of Summer" in a country style. I was able to work out a much better bass line thanks to this video!

Cheers for doing a lesson, regarding country bass. Coming from a rock and blues background and finding myself in a fairly successful old country and red dirt band, I understand these concepts now. Needless to say, if you wanna play country, keep it simple. Root and fifth, have a few great turnarounds in your arsenal and learn to walk that bass! Great lesson as always, Luke!

Great job showing (and naming) it, Luke. Never played C&W but have caught myself making this kind of mistake way too many times. IMHO, the solution is counting. Except for one pianist/musical director who (rightfully) got after me, no one has ever said anything but there's no need: they'll never be as irritated as I am with myself. You'd think I'd learn but it's the same thing every time. I become too relaxed playing by feel, get sloppy with the rhythm, and next thing you know I'm coming in too early or late. It may only last a few bars (or four, or eight) but when I snap out of it my inner voice shouts "COUNT damn it!" I mostly play musical theatre and have figured out ways to cover my errors, but with the wide-open spaces in C&W mistakes become much more glaring. You're a great teacher, Luke. You really do a good job of breaking things down.

Being pretty new to bass but already play guitar, I kinda worked this problem out, but it's great to get the options/solutions confirmed by a pro. Great lessons - thanks.

Great lesson. I've fallen into this trap myself playing folk as well as worship music. It may take a little time to 'unlearn' my bad habits, but this gets that started in the right direction. Thanks, Luke.

Very helpful: I am making this error in Merle Haggard's version of Mama Tried. (I haven't gotten together to play this with my bandmates yet; I wonder if they would notice. We mostly play blues/rock.)

I've been playing country bass since the late eighties, I used to fall into that trap all the time. I found the easiest way around it is just to play the root twice and practice the walk ups and downs he showed so that you can mix it up and not sound stale until you learn other techniques.

Greetings from Greece, Luke! It's a nice video, thank you. I have no idea about country music, but I think this progression sounds like C/C/F/C/C/C/G/G to me. I am not good in music theory by the way. Am I getting it wrong?

This isn't a 'mistake' at all... I do it intentionally a lot and mix it up with walks. It has a place.

@tangogrrl

I didn't either at first. If you close your eyes ... hear where it sort of sounds like it stops, almost like you tripped a little. That's it .
@chrismau1
@chrismau1 4 года назад
He "jumps time" (that's what we call it Minnesota) meaning that in a 4-beat measure, he ends up with the root note being played on the 3rd beat and the 5th note on the 1st beat. So it's not going be an obviously "wrong" note, but people will know that there's something off about how it sounds. However, your band mates are going say, "He did it again! We gotta find somebody else."
@chrismau1
@chrismau1 4 года назад
It always makes me feel like the music lunged forward. Interesting that it makes you feel like it stopped for a second.
@CraigPMiller

I stall can't hear the 'mistake', but I can't understand why any bass player worth their fat strings would restrict themselves to playing only the root and 5th. It's a 'mistake' that only a a complete noob would make - or is only players of Country music?
@BecomeABassist
@BecomeABassist 4 года назад
@Chris Mau - I didn't realize this mistake had a name in some parts of the world. That's so cool. @craig miller - You asked why bass players would 'restrict' themselves. Well you've heard the saying that country music is three chords and truth, right? The saying isn't 3 chords, the truth and a shredding bass line. With few exceptions, people aren't listening to country music for the bass. The other classic 'noob' mistake when it comes to country bass playing is overplaying and distracting from the song.
