Your review was the tipping point for me to buy my Rad Rover 6 Plus Step-Through late September 2023. I also got the rear rack, large basket custom mounted lengthwise and basket liner. I'm 70 and live in Missoula Montana. I love this bike. It fits me and my needs. I use the Kryptonite chain lock as it's lighter than the ABUS and I just carry it in the basket. Thanks for steering my purchase correctly.
Yeah because it's not a true 750w motor it's a 500w motor that peaks to 750w max. RAD Power bikes should really mention this on their website but they don't which is misleading. A true 750w motor will peak well above 750 watts (1000w plus). They do this for legal reasons but if the customer isn't aware of this they are spending more money for less performance compared to other options on the market.
@@zeppast100% truth. I have a Senada Saber, with a 1000w continuous motor, I watch it peaks to 1400w, 1500w all the time on the controller display. Goes up overpasses and hills at 25mph with no problem. These 500w fat tire bikes are very underpowered for the amount of mass they’re moving.
@@Floridaprophet I agree fat tire e-bikes should come with 750w hub motors minimum. As you mentioned these bikes are on average anywhere from 70lbs to 100lbs in some cases. With that much weight you need more power and torque. From a legal standpoint I totally get why RAD Power is doing this but from a consumer perspective they are screwing a lot of people over. It would be different if they actually mentioned this discrepency in their marketing material on their website but they don't which from an ethical standpoint is concerning in my opinion. Unfortunately I feel like the e-bike industry might be forced to adopt what RAD Power is doing as some states like California are now cracking down on e- bikes. Some other states may follow forcing manufactures to comply with Federal over regulation which is never a good thing.
@@zeppast this Convo just made me realize how insane it is to legislate motor power rather than the output in terms of speed limit. If the wattage limits were being followed, every heavy bike would be underpowered and a super light road bike with a 750 mid drive could easily do 45mph+ while being totally legal. Riders in traffic being held to usual traffic laws, and adding speed limits to bike paths/greenways/etc seems like the obvious solution, am I missing something?
Great review as always. I admire you willing to drive in all of that congestion and traffic. Guess we’re spoiled here in Jacksonville with so many bike trails and quiet beaches to ride on. So glad I picked the Himiway Zebra over this one.
Good video! My wife and I rented these while in Mammoth Mountain in the Sierras this July. Great bikes. I want to get one, thanks for confirming that these are decent bikes. Fond memories of my dad living in Santa Monica and me riding my BMX.
Just no way small battery, no locking grips, no trigger shifter, poor power, no torque sensor and the price is just no Worth it. Never buy a bike with such a small battery at least 20 am hr and a 48 volt ? I think Rad is going downhill
Great review. I was not impressed AT ALL with that garbage, "DNP" branded cassette @5:04. It looks like it's made from cheap pot metal, and no two teeth appear to have precisely the same geometry! Pretty uninspiring motor too, given that so many others have made that 20% climb out of your parking garage. All that sand, and nowhere to go would make me unhappy! RAD is going to have to do a LOT better at this price point, especially with manufacturers like Wired eBikes coming out with such amazing fat-tire models for exactly the same money.
Rad bikes are good for being well built and by the book legal e-bikes, and their accessory ecosystem is top tier. Just don’t expect to go ripping down the road on one.
I’d bet Rad is going the way of Van Moof. Just about every VC has been burned and the companies are bloated with uncompetitive inventory (ie $700 off on rad step over) and too many employees. They grew too quick during the pandemic and didn’t plan for the change in demand coming out. No amount of marketing can make these bikes competitive and prices continue to fall. Lots of companies are in trouble.
Their are resilient companies like Apple, DJI (for film making and photography land and aerial drone) and perhaps Rad Power" consumer tech and prosumer providers can learn, evolve and move forward if the consumers see innovation and quality ....consumers will become loyal
Apple and DJI are not even in the same Universe in terms of sustainable competitive advantage. Rad Power has none. They sell the same cheap Chinese bikes as HUNDREDS of other companies. Worse, they are overpriced and underpowered. With China struggling economically look for more cheap e bikes to flood the market. Great time to be a consumer, not so great to be a bloated bike company. There is no loyalty or brand equity in the low end market, price and performance are king. As an aside, I think the Ukrainians actually are using e bikes with their special forces to move silently. They also have a domestically produced 2 man e bike where one solider carries an anti tank missile, no shit.
Yeah if you're a heavier person or if you want power and speed do not buy anything from Rad Power bikes their bikes are extremely conservative in regards to peak power and torque. A "750w motor" from them is basically a 500w nominal motor with a peak of 750 watts max and a lower amp controller so it's a bit misleading. RAD Power does this to comply with federal e-bike laws. The problem is every other manufacturer selling 750w bikes offers true 750w nominal motors that peak well above 750 wats (1000w+). So with that being said if you like power and speed and torque RAD Power isn't for you their bikes are some of the most underpowered bikes on the market. Rad Power should really disclose that their "750w" motors are really 500w hub motors. If you look on their website they don't say anything about this which is really a bad look as it's misleading to their customer base.
Great review. I have one of these in gray. I got unlucky and got a lemon. It's had a defective bell, battery, cadence sensor, controller and the left-side display. It use to turn itself on in the middle of the night. Despite all that I still have it. Rode it this morning instead of my Himiway. Cheers.
My wife and I own to city 5+ for two years now. We have 1700 miles on them and start having motor in electrical problems with the bikes. The bikes were never driven in the rain and they look like brand new bikes. Dealing with red is horrible their customer service is atrocious it cost us almost $1000 to get our bikes back on the road. I would never buy or recommend this bike company just because of their customer service it’s horrible
I've found Rad has different components on their bikes sometimes. it varies from where you get it. One bike will have leather grips and tektro parts, and another can have rubber grips and nutt parts. not a big deal but I thought it was interesting. mine had rubber grips, no jumper cable, Nutt parts, and a Shimano Deore derailleur. good bike though.
Love my 6+! Most people want an E-Bike to behave like a motorcycle instead of what it is. Rad markets a class 2 bike not a class 3 bike that pretends to be class 2.
As an owner of 3 rad bikes I can say the rad bikes are quite user-friendly but alas their support and warranty department are the worst you could ever hope for. Because of their shaded and despicable practices concerning support and warranty I would never recommend any rad bike ever!
I would love to see you do a review of the Juiced RipCurrent or CrossCurrent, thoroughly enjoy all your videos! I've been watching Juiced for years now and am nearly ready to pull the trigger, but I can't find any thorough quality reviews such as yours. Appreciate your time!
It went together easily in less than an hour. ru-vid.comUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
Don't buy it. Terrible customer service. components suck. If something is wrong with the bike you have to fix it yourself and if you can't fix, they send the same parts over and over until your warranty ends. I bought 2 rad bikes brand new and 1 works, the other doesn't.
I am pretty disappointed with Rad. I got that bike last year. Since then, I have put around 1100 miles on it. In that time the headlight broke of, the wire for the brake light got rubbed in two from being ran along the under side of the rear fender. Started getting error codes for the controller and tried contacting Rad 4 different times to no avail. When I finally did I was told I am just past the 1 year warranty, Had they answered me 3 months prior I wouldn't have been. Honestly, I would NEVER buy another one even if they came down to a grand. When that stupid bike stops working you won't be pedaling anywhere too swiftly. It's like a brick when it stops.. Ugh, this bike just gets under my skin because it has left me stuck miles away with battery power but error codes that would deliver power for a few seconds then quit. Now, I am riding my back up Trek because the Rad is out of commission and I can't get any help from Rad. If you're actually gonna use the bike for off-road use, I would SERIOUSLY look into different bikes. Branded parts like the hub motor don't do any good if the other parts that deliver the power are junk and unbranded. Really though, if you are gonna depend on this for a mode of transportation or you're spending limited funds don't buy this bike. Not to mention that most of their parts including batteries can't interchange with many other Rad bikes. I seriously have a love hate relationship with mine, I loved it, now I hate it, mainly because they appeared to be the best at that time.. knowing what I know now, I would probably get the Wired Freedom or Nomad 1 and probably get a backup battery with the difference in cost.
Does anybody have any advice on what do, when the electronics don't work anymore? I rode my RadRover 6 + for only 13 months until it stopped working. I replaced every electronic part, but it doesn't help. I am pretty desperate, because the RAD service refuses to help...
When the last time Rad came out with a new bike. Not paying 1400 for a bike battery that's not integrated into the frame. 😂😂. They so behind the times. These bikes should be easily only about $700
These are like 1200 now hey, maybe be a better option than velotric t1ST or lectric offering, kinda apples and oranges. Ide go with the step over model, wonder avout the Lectric step over 750 models
Just purchased on June 20th, 2024, I worked for 2 days and have stopped working, Customer Support has not been helpful, and has been unresponsive. They thought it was the controller, ordered it, on July 6th, and as of July 9th it has not been sent out yet. And I have to take the bike apart and fix it. I called a service center (the closest was 2 hours away) and they felt it was the motor. They have not been helpful, as it is so big, I can't transport it and would have to hire a van and drive 2 hours each way to get it to a service center. So, if anything goes wrong with the bike as in my situation, and you're not close to a service center nor have a vehicle large enough to transport this bike, as of the date of this writing, you are screwed. And good luck speaking with someone with authority to make decisions.
I belong to several Rad Power Bike groups on Facebook and we have had quite a few people who have bricked their Rad Rover 6 battery when they mistakenly stuck their key into the charge port instead of the battery lock and blew the charging circuit fuse. The fuses are soldered directly to the BMS board making it almost impossible for the average user to replace.
I have replaced the motor controler 3 times in 3 years. Frame geometry provides a death wobble that recuires front brake application to gain control. The front axle is not sized correctly for a 80 plus pound bike ,aswell locking arm on axle can be installed so that it contacts front rotor and diconects axle . Ive enjoy this bike at times but it is unreliable and unfortunately dangerous.
You always set a poor example for E bike riders, ride on grass, sidewalks where peds have to dodge you, hardly slow down like you're entitled to be there, run down the beach in the sand like you're showing off, go thru red lights , stop signs, split lanes between cars. Obviously in California you're getting away with it for now, but this kind of stuff only hurts responsible E bike riders. You're going to make stricter laws for all of us. At least do this in private and don't encourage it. Enjoy all your free e bikes but find some dirt trails or a racetrack to show off. or ride like you appreciate the opportunity to be a bike when convenient or a motor vehicle that gets you where youre going faster and show respect for that.
How much are you getting paid to promote this ebikle. I notice the bike isn't stock anymore with your up grade. lol Was riding over a 100 mile on a single charge to much for you? lol
I'm stunned these things can't even go up a simple incline. So which model has the power to whip up an incline like the intro? I got a couple giant pedal assist ebikes. Cool but not very impressed.
not for me. I dont care about it being 'legal" I want a bike that can be a motorcycle and bike. I want great range like nearing 100 miles, wiht great power that wont limit where I can go, because lets face it, nobody is going to pedal a 80lb bike up a dirt hill without power assist.
I notice that this video is carefully edited using fast cuts, so as not to show any aspect of the bike for too long, or not enough for close look at anything specific. There are close up shots but the cuts are so quick that one has to pause the video for a good look at anything. I wonder if this is just an editing style which is fine if the purpose of the video is for entertainment or perhaps marketing? I would like to see a video designed to educate.
You should include ground clearance to strike frame or Front Sprocket . pedal to ground clearance. Foot peg to fender or wheel distance when tire is turned. Some bikes have lower frame clearance and some you can hit your foot on the fender turning.. Maybe toss up specs you measured so we can pause the video and check.. Include bar length and back of seat to bar distance. Put it up so we can pause and look.
It's a good bike AS LONG as you get the upgraded 35amp controller for $250. When I bought it, it was on sale for $1,699. No way is it worth $2,099! So, with the new controller it cost me $1,950. Honestly, I was very disappointed when I initially purchased this bike but I can now bring the watts up to 1400 peak and it climbs hills no problem. I've put over 2,000 miles on mine so far and it's been pretty reliable. However, If I was currently looking to buy a fat tire ebike id skip this and buy the Wired Freedom.
We have had the bike for about a week and already the throttle has decided to stop working. The pedal assist works but no throttle. I went to the on line chat and waited over and hour and a half to speak with someone, and unfortunately missed them due to having a life instead of sitting in front of my computer waiting......However they were kind enough to send me a list of useless "trouble shooting" things I could try. Nothing like spending 2k on a bike only to have to try to fix it yourself during your 1 year "warranty". If I wanted to mess around trying to fix things myself I would have just built one myself not bought one that is built with a warranty, it seems according to Rad that the purchaser is the warranty. Follow up. Rad offers nothing for warranty (including a broken bike out of the box) other than extensive procedures for trouble shooting then will send you the new parts.......once you have jumped through all of their hoops effectively. Maybe at that time they will send you some parts.....that you get to install or pay a bike shop to do for you. For the love of God do not buy one of these. I cannot state that loud enough!!!!!!!!!!!! RUN DONT WALK AWAY FROM THESE BIKES. CAUSE YOU SURE AS HELL WONT BE ABLE TO BIKE AWAY. oH AND PREPARE TO WAIT UPWARDS OF AN HOUR JUST TO SPEAK WITH SOMEONE ONLINE THAT "HELPS" YOU. Below is pert of the conversation I had with one of the on line reps, basically what she is saying is that sometimes the bikes are well built and sometime they are shit. When a shit one goes out it is the customers responsibility to show us what we did wrong so we can maybe send you parts so you can fix it yourself. What a great service, hopefully at some point your bike will work, and in the meantime you get to be an unlicensed e bike mechanic. And all you had to do was trade 2500 bucks for a broken bike. """""""""""ut of the box, some of our bikes will need little to no tuning or adjustments. Others will need a more thorough going over. For those who just don’t feel up to attempting the needed tuning and adjustments please seek out help from your Local Bike Shop (LBS). Expect to pay for this service and inquire ahead of time what the charges may be. Examples of tune-ups that are the new bike owner’s responsibility are but are not limited to: Troubleshooting, installation of replacement parts, Brake adjustments, Brake Rotor Truing,"""""""""
No chance I would pay two grand for that bike. Sooooooo many better options out there. Rad always seems behind the curve in a lot of ways. I know they have great customer service, but this bike is a kitten. Great video as always.
I have a power 6 plus and the customer service was horrible, it takes forever just to make an appointment and it is a pretty expensive service. In Seattle at least.
I am speaking from experience. If you ever have the discomfort of dealing with their warranty or support people you will immediately regret purchasing a rad bike!
Hi Matt, love your videos. Congratulations on your subscriber numbers climbing. Been watching when you had about 25k not to long ago. I've been hoping you would be sent a Euphree City Robin x plus bike to review. Any chance you have one ready to unbox soon? I would hate to buy right before you reviewed one. You have been instrumental on my choice of that bike although you have not reviewed it ,from all the information you have provided on your reviews of other bikes. I've been between the Hovsco city cruiser, Ride 1up LMT'D , and the Euphree. Any thoughts from your subscribers or yourself on those options? I'm a 60 yr old male who lives in Fort Lee NJ by the George Washington Bridge. So I encounter some steep hills. I will take the bike into NYC to drive on the Greenway along the Hudson River. So, i need torque, amp hours, acceleration to cross busy streets and speed to get through some "unknown' neighborhoods. Any thoughts from your subscribers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your feedback
🙏 thanks! I just spent a handful of minutes looking over the spec sheet on it for you, I don’t really see any reason why not to get it other than maybe price is a bit premium, but good features are included no doubt. I like that it has the included suspension seat post just like on the bike in this review. I cannot speak for how good the torque sensor is, I know sometimes they feel better on some bikes compared to others. The battery seems like the right size for that bike, and Samsung cells. If it were not for the Vanpowers urban glide ultra topping out at 20 mph, I’d tell you to take a look at that one, because that was an excellent bike for a similar price, but if 28 mph is essential for you then you’ll have to skip that one. The hovsco city cruiser I reviewed was also excellent and very similar specs compared to the euphree, I can tell you for sure the hovsco torque sensor was two thumbs up. Hope this helps, I don’t have any plan to be getting the euphree any time soon but I bet you’d be happy with it. If your heart is set on it, grab it and enjoy the rest of the warm weather this year. Happy riding ⚡️🤙
I know you're well-versed in settings. Are you aware of a product that can address the controller parameters of various e-bikes and bypass the limitations imposed by the on-board control systems? Or are you interested in developing one? As an old hot-rodder, I'm thinking it should be possible if you could get connectivity/control over the controller. (Think wrecked T3sla Plaid under '57 Ch3vy...)
There used to be a kit for rad you could buy to bypass and get more power, I guess it doesn’t work for newer models. Grin Tech makes some cool controller mod options. Perhaps I may need to create the TailHappy Ebike 😜⚡️⚡️
I have a heybike brawn..it is a 750w bike but it peaks out over 1100 w and with states changing laws I’m having to downgrade to a class2.I bought this bike so we will See how it compares.i like That you can disconnect the throttle for Class 1 only areas.guess I’ll have to swap the throttle out for a Regular grip so I don’t get a ticket in Florida .they are sticklers
It's funny how spoiled you are in the USA compared to Germany....like this one and the himiway cruiser are the only legal options under 2000€ and this one is one sale right now for 1200€ which is absolutely a no brainer. I have an illigal unlocked cruiser already for fun and will buy this one as workhorse. I hate Germany for their restrictions.... P.s seems like nobody is interested in it: The most important part to my on an E-Bike is the battery. I don't want Chinese crap fake battery packs exploding at night when me and my wife are asleep lol but non of the E-Bike RU-vidrs give a damn about that I highly doubt that all bike available for 2000 grants are safe to use. 😂💥🤯
On my third Rover 4,5 now 6. My only issue with RAD is the lack of customer service at in person service centers like the one in Imperial Beach California who are booking any service appointments months out and more. Bike rate 9 of 10 In person Service 3 of 10👎
You review the cheap Internet "budget friendly" bikes, such as Rad. They include Magicycle, Lectric, Aventon. Bike shops do not repair these Amazon-in-a-box things. They are cheaply built & you get what you pay for. Rad has recently been sued for wrongful death and in other lawsuits. They had to recall 30,000 cargo bikes. Their tires blow apart, their front wheels wobble and cause crashes, their batteries catch fires and their brakes are known to fail. These are events that don't happen on Trek, Specialized, Giant, Tern, or Giselle--reputable brands with dealer support. Aren't you aware that reputable bike shops routinely will not repair these Amazon-friendly cheapo bikes. Therefore, to keep them going the customer will have to find parts, if they remain in business, and find someone who will attempt to keep them functioning. Bottom line, your choice is you can get fresh oats or oats that have been through the horse. Rad Rover is the latter--a steaming pile of oats that have been run through the horse. Caveat emptor!
@@TailHappyTV LOL, I'm bad about throwing away (recycling) boxes myself. I'm sure I'm going to need it for some reason so it sits my shop taking up space until I finally get rid of it.
Is that why They only have a 1yr warranty. Have been in financial trouble? Don't have the peeps or time to answer their phones for days on end. Great company to buy from😂❤
The greedy wealthy they can buy things in a heartbeat. It took me over a year to get everything I needed for bike touring. There are still a few more items needed to complete the list. So far as what I have for touring, I am completely satisfied. The majority of my camping gear was purchased from China. The wealthier classes spend way over $3000 just for the basics in bike touring equipment, but I have only spent way less than they as for total for equipment cost.
Review of the suntour suspension seat post is almost helpful. The ultra cheap "accordion" suspension seat posts do not bob, or interfere with pedaling. I've seen a previous review of yours (iirc) where you called the suntour better than some rear suspension setups, but I don't remember you bobbing like a clown, then. Have you tried preload adjustments on this one? Is it preset for lower weight? I understand you just want a motor cycle, but that would seem like a deal breaker for people who want bicycles. Also dangerous for handling/endo on extreme rutty high speed roads/paths.
I think all those warning tags are for California - where the bike will go into thermonuclear detonation killing everyone in the sate (and that state only).
I'm suprised the cone didn't reply: 'Are you talking to me?'. Anyway, I love your work man. You seem like a decent guy giving sincere reviews with no bullshit info. Only the things what really matters to bikers. You're one of the best bike reviewers out there. Thanks alot.
