When I need pots, I go to Goodwill or other thrift stores and find what I need for under $5. I even use things that aren't flower pots and I just drill holes in the bottom and I now have a flower pot! I live on a fixed income and even if I didn't, I'd still do it this way. I don't like paying full price for anything. Plus, this is more fun, hunting for a thingy I can make into a pot!! I have some beauties. I used to prune roots back in the 70s, and have forgotten all about it since. Thanks for the reminder. ( when you get old, not only do you lose your youth, you lose your memory)

Well, Sunday I discovered a bunch of roots coming out from under the pot of my nearly 20-year-old ficus which looks like a tree in my apartment now. The same day, I ordered a larger pot online to be delivered at the store, so didn’t pay for it yet. The next day, yesterday, after watching totally randomly one of your videos about cutting the roots, I decided to give it a try. Well, I did it today. I pushed my sofa away, put some newspapers and plastic on the floor, and laid down my tree on it. I said « I’m sorry, hold on, buddy ». I was afraid to break its branches. It was hard to remove the pot. It was so heavy. But I finally made it. I had a long bread knife that I never use, which was perfect. I started to cut 1 third of the bottom. God, it was cutting like in a soft wedding cake. Some roots were very thick though. But I was confident that it was for the better. Then I cut the sides. One piece on the left, one piece on the right. Then I turned the tree on itself to get the other sides. Also on the sides some roots were huge. I kept saying « Hold on, be strong ! I’m sorry. » So I cut again left and right. I had finally a square shape. I rinsed the pot and the plate to have them clean. Filled the pot with new organic soil. Then I lifted up my tree to put it back into the pot. Men, that was still hard and heavy, I had my head in the middle of the branches, which made me look fresh and sexy like a rose flower as you can imagine. But I was glad to see I didn’t break any branches on the floor. I added more soil all around the square to finally get a full new pot of soil. I cleaned my floor, put my sofa back in place and gave my tree and myself some water. My tree is standing proudly straight. Now I’m waiting for the next days……. 🙏🏻🤗❤

I love this video so much! I gifted my cousin a pothos and a month after, I noticed it started having a lot of yellow leaves every time I saw the plant. I asked about their watering schedule and it was the normal pothos care (letting the plant dry out) so this immediately signaled to me it was root bound instead of a watering issue. Not to mention I could visually see how many pothos stems were in the pot already and the way it was sold, the vines were all tangled on top of each other. I opened the pot and it had beautiful healthy roots 😍 but indeed was very root bound. I was going to keep the original pot plus one ceramic one that I was going to stick a clear nursery pot in for ease of watering, but I ended up separating the plant into all three of the pots! There was just that many roots! I did actually trim the bottom roots of some of my new plant piles too because I knew that the roots could withstand it and I wanted it to be a while before another repot would be needed. I love watching these videos as reassurance that I did indeed do the right things for the plants 😅 I can’t wait to see how they will thrive after the separating and repot!

I wonder if you might have an idea what is wrong with my ficus benjamina tree (sorry I don't have a pic). It was super healthy and full when I bought it (Nov?), about three ft tall. Right away repotted it into a bigger pot. It got a little shocky (some yellow leaves) but seemed to recover well, lots of new growth. It's in my house. Over the last month, it's gone super shocky, yellow falling leaves :( A couple branches might be okay but I don't have much hope. The soil is covered with rocks, and I've only been watering it (a good soak) about once a month. I've heard they can be delicate. But I have one on my SoCal covered patio; it's 10-ft tall and is 28 years old; but the first 10 years it was in my dark house in Washington state. Thank you.

@dixiechick6652
@dixiechick6652 Год назад
In my experience it depends on how severe you root prune. In spring I would only trim the roots or uppot and not bother the top. In summer I can do a more heavy root prune and repot if needed but I always trim top back also because it no longer has enough roots to sustain so many leaves of course depending on the plants. Or you might just get some leaf drop on it’s own.

ya I only do this on vining plants. Just repotted a huge yucca tree last week going up from a 12 inch to a 14in pot. 8 ft tall 4ft wide bushy big guy from pot to almost ceiling in my east facing bay window.. Love Yuccas. super root bound so I teased out the bottom and sides before repotting very carefully and minorly, and now bottom leaves drooping and leaves developing hard black tips. I also used a thin knife around the sides to free up the damn thing out of the pot and that probably damaged some roots too. crossing my fingers it can recover but I'm probably gonna lose a whole lot of bottom leaves :(
@aspirativemusicproduction2135

I find grow lights do wonders in my propagation nursery. The colors have a purpose. I can choose the color light I use for a specific purpose, ie: growing roots or for blooming. I have a few orchids that were struggling. I used a white grow light and added a small humidifier and all are happy and growing spikes for their blooms. The lights and humidifier have made a huge difference for my more temperamental plants.

I've had one on my peace lily for years. They red and blue ones are actually good for it to help promote the flower. Although peace lillies don't take much to bloom lol.

Very helpful. I've been replanting plants that have outgrown their pot into larger pots. I didn't cut any roots and now I hope they will thrive or at least survive. Thank you!

I just typed a question about if you should also prune a bit of leaves if you prune the roots because my intuition would say the plant might have trouble sustaining the foliage if significant amount of roots are removed, and then you mentioned some leaves dying. I guess you have a choice of choosing yourself what gets removed or let the plant choose and just pick the dead leaves off?

Yeah I wouldn’t prune the leaves. You summed it up nicely. Let the plant choose.

I watched the video and liked it; in fact, I'm a subscriber. I'm surprized you didn't use any rooting hormone to stimulate new root development. Why? Wouldn't you recommend it, or not? What about Superthrive? Do you have faith in it? Thanks for the great instructional video. Before watching, I would have NEVER done such a thing! This sort of sets my mind at ease and gives me new freedom about repotting. 🪴😉

Thanks Dale. I’d not really thought about rooting hormone to be honest. RH is a nice to have rather than a necessity. Roots do fine by themselves in my experience. Not heard of superthrive. What is it?
