This guy is one of the most effective teachers I've come across. I've watched this, and his lesson on the half-whole dimished scale, both very, very good.
I concur about the HW scale lesson. It finally hit home with me. I always just used it with a half diminished chord. Marc is excellent and very funny too. 👍
I could also hear the tune in the second example. I couldn’t really do that the first time. I always try and hear the tune during the solo, easier and more natural than counting bars and memorizing changes.
I thought you were going to say melody before harmony. Dont outline the harmony and neglect the melody. Rather try to "hang the harmony off the melody" Anyway you're the man Marc
Thanks -- and yes: of course, *that* too is important! As I keep telling students, when someone is singing in the shower, it's not the chord changes (harmony) they're singing! It's the theme / melodic framework or a song. So yes -- making linear improv lyrical is always a top priority :)
thank you! Dead simple but right on! I know there's times I've accidentally done this and noticed that my playing was much better. As I listened, I'm trying to guess "the secret", and I'm thinking it's LEAVE SPACE, but I'm also thinking that the first example sounds like my playing, and is also really hard to follow. It seems like the very act of leaving space gives you time to react to what you just played and play something that builds on it or adds to it.
YES -- you described the process perfectly. Actually, I was still in college when I found out about this. And the first noticeable impact I noticed is having the ability to "digest" my own lines while I was playing them. It's almost as if I would wait for the last idea to "echo back" into my ears before moving on to the next thing. Like making a more informed decision for what's next.
I’ve been following you for some years now , and thx u! (Your record is stellar!)esp this opening track👍🏼) I’ve learned and gained so much from your lessons Thx u for all your knowledge you shared!!!
My Tip = Find your own organic body rythm !!! Marc has trully found his own 🤓 Melodies comes from Rythms ....Rythms comes from your heart beat, vessels flow, neurons electricity (NOT the 5G) Respect yourself N the universe .......they will give you what you need in whatever you might do 🔥 Yoga Zazen TaiChi help🙏

Ah that's a good question -- I believe this relates more or less to what I call "'Pillar Three" see this post: www.jazzguitarlessons.net/blog/improvisation-pillar-articulate-lines
Great lesson! I recently realized I don't really breathe when improvising. So these days I try to concentrate on my breath. I try to breathe and that works well in leaving space.
