It makes perfect sense! I do have a 7 wood, and I have been hitting it as my go-to club out of the rough, at least, when it's not so deep that I can't use anything other than a wedge. I didn't know why it seemed to work, but now I do. I will definitely try choking down a little to get a smaller circumference circle/steeper angle, and I think that will enable me to hit in even deeper grass without having to go all the way to the wedge. Thanks!

Great vid. Always great to understand how and why something works …or doesn’t. The hosel ahead of the club face makes perfect sense

Yeah, but a 4 hybrid is a better version of a 7 wood, so I would ignore his advice and get used to hybrids, great clubs to use.

You the man. I did what you said and used a 7 wood in the rough. I couldn’t have hit it better if I tried. I give you an 11 out of 10.

Very interesting video and makes sense. I have a 7-wood in my bag and it works great for me off of the tee on some holes and in the fairway. But I've never even considered using it out of the rough. I will definitely give it a try. Thanks for the video!

Try a half swing with the 7 wood sometime, you’ll be amazed how easily it cuts through the rough!
@PanglossDr
@PanglossDr 3 месяца назад
I liked your suggestion to go 'half way'. I do that regularly when on the fairway if the green is out of range. If the first shot goes half way I use the same club again. More often than not it doesn't so I go up or down a club for my next. If the grass is very long I pick the shortest path to a good lie, sideways often. I position the ball in line with my right foot and hit down almost vertically with a pitching wedge. It only goes about 20 yards but has rarely failed to get me out.

I’m a believer now too!! What a great idea. Put the so-called ‘rescue’ club away because it won’t rescue you from this kind of rough lie but using a high-lofted fairway wood is a great idea. It makes perfect sense, as he says. I may even buy a 7-wood just for this very job. Thank you Sensei!

TY, I shot my worse score 96 two weeks ago. Came across your videos and found answers to a lot of my problems I was experiencing; chipping, putting, driver. Yesterday 8/29/24, I shot my best score of 2024; 84, by implementing your suggestions. Have you made any videos on hitting irons higher? Currently a 15 HCP, I live in Phila so unable to schedule a session with you.

The leading edge of your hybrid and your 7-wood are positioned about the same in front of the hosel of BOTH clubs. You simply concealed it on the hybrid. I'll continue to use my hybrid for these situations, as it's shorter and I control it better.

You can have a fairway holt melted and cut down to feel more solid and controllable than a hybrid. But if you like the look of a hybrid, go for it. I could never get along with a hybrid but I love my 9 wood cut down and hot melted to E3 swing weight.

I've not had so much luck with fairways out of the rough but I don't choke down that far. Will have to give it a try but it seems I would have to open the face a bit too to compensate for the upright face.

Horses for courses , different rough requires a different approach . I do agree that a wood ( i only carry a five ) is usually better than a hybrid from long leaf grabby grasses , however if you have duvet fescue you are not getting any wood or hybrid in there ever , that requires a hosel first iron with force , swampy rough will also laugh at a wood but accepts a fast aggressive iron .
@mrbigglesworth375
@mrbigglesworth375 Месяц назад
Look for the average golfer stop trying to make that hero shot out of the rough. Just take a lofted club 8,9,pw etc and get it back into the fairway. Wedge it on, two putt take your bogey and move on. Even scratch players often take this approach.

Thanks for this video!!! Before I knew anything about evaluating lies, I tried something as stupid as hitting a 6-iron out of 6”-8” rough. I learned a hard won lesson not to hit lower lofted clubs out of the rough. Thanks for teaching me WHAT TO DO in this situation. How do you recommend people to practice this shot to get a sense for distance?

The problem is that virtually all public courses and many private ones do not do a 1st and 2nd cut of rough like the pros get to play out of every day. The first cut is mowed higher than the fairway but lower than the rough - the ball still is very visible and hit-able!

It does matter what distance your trying to get out of shot, and thickness of rough. Obviously you’re not going to go 200 yrds with an 8 iron,my go to is hinge club early and predict ball to go left, so aim right.

...is that you ACTUALLY have to hit it from there. Pick it up or use the .75 iron cleat "stinger"... Back to the fairway...and you don't have to hit it from there either. Get you a tee..and a 90* wedge and you deserve whatever happens if you act on this....

I can't see any reason why you would use a ladies club rather than a 4-hybrid. Hybrids are great out of the rough and a lower ball flight too, to run it up the fairway. I used to carry a 7-wood years ago, but they became redundant when hybrids arrived (except maybe for high handicap ladies, who shouldn't be allowed on golf courses anyway). Poor video.
