Thank you for this!!! I am the last one standing in my family. Literally. Even became a widow recently and I’ve been on this minimalism path for a while but since my husbands death, even more so as I want to move abroad. I’m DAILY bummed out about how little progress I’m making despite daily trips to the donation drop off. And there are days the grief grips me and I get nothing done. It’s wonderful to see the real, human mess involved with daily life. And the clutter bomb that happens when you start to declutter that makes you live either with stacks of things like a hoarder or put everything back in the closet in an effort to tidy up and not going back to it for a month or two. I’m on a journey. It’s a lifestyle not a place to arrive, like so many things! Thanks again! Big fan of your channel.
Gabe is real. I very much appreciate this vid. My biggest struggle is not letting the stuff go but rather what to do with it. Sell it, donate it, trash it, or let family/friends pick through what they want first. The struggle is real.
That can definitely be overwhelming. For a while, we were trying to sell things and then recently we went to just donating most stuff. It really helps us buy less when we don’t get anything back lol besides the obvious more expensive stuff.
Donating would definitely speed up the process. Donating it is then. Glad we had this chat. I’ve found this new minimalist mindset has extended beyond the interior of my home to also include what I keep in my car, office, and even around the outside of my house, like simplifying what’s in my yard and patio.
Donating is the best. I feel good knowing someone else may like something I gave. If it is something that was expensive but I don't want it anymore, someone else will get a deal and enjoy it or find it useful...
I also prefer to just donate. If I sell things then I still buy things because I’m less afraid of spending money because I think I can just sell it later. But when I donate I don’t think that way so it actually ends up saving me money. When I go shopping it’s more clear what I actually need. Now I look at things like I would already donate this before even buying it.
Thanks for reminding me it’s a journey. We just moved from a 4 bedroom house down to a 2 bedroom and cutting our sq footage in half has made me feel like my minimalism progress in the 4 bedroom home was all for nothing 😅
Don't be so hard on yourself. I just moved this month after 27 years in the same house, the last 5 of which I considered myself a minimalist. I had so much stuff to pack and move, I kept calling myself, " LIAR, you're no minimalist!" But it really is a journey and if I had not stopped decluttering a while back, it would have been so much more difficult.
Why remove stuff that is still functional when you have the space? Most of the time no one else wants your stuff. Best is to try to buy less and use what you have.
I'm frugal on what doesn't matter much, and much less frugal on the things that do. Dad always said "save your money so you can buy what you (really) want AND PAY CASH". Meaning, don't charge it unless the money is in the bank.
I think of all the money I’ve spent on so many useless stuff that I’ve only used once or twice, or not at all, clothes with the tickets still on them, so much waste. I just sorted through more stuff, and thought of all the money spent, as I hauled stuff to the resale shop, and then donated a ton of stuff, and it felt good getting rid of it. I’m doing it little by little. I just realized, I sound like a hoarder, but no, absolutely I am not. I just spend too much on good quality, but useless things. At least I realize how dumb it is, and your videos are really good to watch and learn from. Thanks Gabe.
We don't live in a furniture store. We live in a house with real people. Each of them has his / her own needs and habbits. Of course the house reflects that! Minimalism is about becoming aware what you really need, what serves you and being mindful. Concentrating on the things that are important to you. 😊❤
I’m naturally minimalist, right now wife and kids are away and I’m at home in an empty spotless house. You’d think I’d be happy but I miss the madness and flow of mess. It’s life.
For me minimalism has been great! For me it's taught me more about spending/budgeting and goal setting. While I still have lots of stuff, I find I'm way more organized and can focus on other things more clearly. It's not for everyone but has helped me out over the last year.
I resonate with this a lot. I decluttered about 80% of my kids' toys. The remaining 20% are being spread out all throughout their room. Every single day. On repeat. Also: Currently, we are doing a no-buy month. 'No-buy' is relative, though. Yesterday, our toilet seat broke. Definitely, we are not waiting another month to fix that, haha
I hear you. As a minimalist, I get those criticisms, too, when I introduce new things into my home/life. Although irritating at times, I just smile now and don't comment. I'm very comfortable with my decisions. Love your show.
I do maintain a 90% clean house (I only wash my dishes every other meal), but I have no spouse, kids, or pets. I have also gotten rid of almost everything that I don’t use on a weekly basis. I would consider myself close to an extreme minimalist, and I am the first person who will admit that this is not the perspective that many people will have. If you have family members, pets, or friends that regularly come over, I don’t think it is feasible to expect to have the perfect minimalism house all the time.
Decluttering happens in layers, like an onion. Or a parfait. I'm moving away from minimalism which focuses on less to essentialism. I surround myself with the items and activities that are essential, most rewarding, and most valuable. Sometimes minimalism misses that in its focus on less.
Gabe Jesus said it best. He who is without Sin Cast the first stone. At this point I'm a minimalist and this way it's super easy to clean. It's basically bare, but like you I've got things that have to be done my house has your problems. You're helping us not lose our way. I tell you honestly no one with kids under 5 can keep their house clean. That's why it's great that many men are picking up after themselves. Just keep being you and giving us ideas. Minimalism is a work in progress and realize even if perfection doesn't exist we all are trying to make our life easier. Thanks for your honesty and your videos. ❤
Thanks for talking about affording minimalism. I was raised well below the poverty line, and instinctively always kept extras of everything because you never know! When my husband and I were getting out of debt, I begin to realize that nearly everything I owned could easily be replaced, and for nowhere near what I had built up in my mind. The journey has helped me focus on my people instead of things.
Great words and so much wisdom in here! (Mantra: “Comparison is a thief of joy.”) It’s about improving our lives in many ways. Thank you for being honest and vulnerable!
I started watching your videos years ago and thought I'd check out how you're doing! Wow - amazed to see you've got over half a million subscribers. Good for you 👍
Great point you made; I think people naturally assume minimalists are super tidy and clean all the time as they have so little possessions; news flash being tidy and a minimalist isn't mutually exclusive!
We know that, it’s a continuous journey. I’m happier just buying what I need or really want. My house is always changing, constantly and I realize that will never change.
"....especially if you live in your house." When our sons' friends used to come over when they were teens, I used to say to them sometimes, if things were messy, "Sorry about the mess. We actually live here."
Hi Gabe Love your videos It can be abit overwhelming when you first start to become a miniamlist It's true nothing is perfect That's life We are aesthetic creatures so it's nice to have a window into someone else's life Just like watching a good movie Stay positive Life's a journey At the end of the day we are only here to evolve and become the best version of ourselves Love and peace x
It's sort of paradoxical to try to be a certain way cause you want to, only to have others dictate what they expect you to be, and being pressured by that. I have to be honest when I got into the minimalist thing it was probably the most miserable I have ever been in my life looking back on it now. I noticed I was using "minimalism" as vehicle to find some purpose in life, which exactly like how no matter how much material you acquire, you'll never really find what you're looking for. In an identical fashion, no matter how much material you purge, you'll never rid the things that you really want to.
That’s why I love @Natalie Bennett and other that talk about minimalism and are constantly showing us that they declutter and clean even though they are more minimalistic
Thank you for showing me that terribly cluttered room, from when you first started minimalising. That's how our back room currently looks, after I decided to declutter. A mountain of clutter has grown in the back room. I was beginning to despair, but after seeing how your room ended up for a while, I think it must be part of the course. Phew! 😊😊
This video was very helpful and I always appreciate your content and have been a long time watcher. I love how grounded you are and this video was gold
Enjoy each step of the journey. Feel happy about the outcome of your effort, NOT because you did a thing, but because you made 1 more sliver of your life faster or cleaner or because your inch of progress made you smile.
I’ve been on the Swedish Death Cleaning too. 2023 hit me like a bomb. I turned 60, got diagnosed with cancer, retired and relocated halfway across the country. It was definitely an eye opener and I know I don’t want to leave a burden for my kids. My cancer is in remission and I’m getting back to healthy. But the move into a 950 sq ft home with my husband was a great motivator to take a hard look at everything.
Well said!!! Minimalism is different for everyone and is JUST a tool to live a more stress free life. Ever since Americans discovered a more minimalist way of living after the Marie Kondo book "life changing habits of tidying up" its been taken to the other end of the scale!.. totally MISSING THE POINT behind Minimalism! Thank goodness this more minimalist lifestyle, and not a completely consumeristic lifestyle, is more "the norm" for us non-Americans so we don't have the need to take it to the extreme.
Friendly Reminder: Marie Kondo doesn’t promote minimalism. She promotes finding your own “set point” or what Dana K. White calls your personal clutter threshold.
@@username00009 Exactly!.. Marie Kondo wasn't talking directly about minimalism.. but the Americans "discovered minimalism" as an extension of MKs book concepts and then took their "tidying up" to the other end of the scale!
I buy lots and bundle stuff together at flea markets-good wills- etc, sell to break even then make my stuff for free. Buy my clothes cheap but they’re nice name brands. Spending little money for my things is minimalist to me. Spending more for quality saves me over the long run. Ex- mattresses-dressers-shoes. Call it what you want but I’m happy.
What's the new water filter and why? You're selling your Berkey? How much? And the term I've gotten to prefer over minimalist is essentialist. What's absolutely essential for me to live a simple, ordered life. Works for me!😉
Minimalism is not moral. And everyone has their own version of how much they want to handle and have in their house. Everyone should worry about what they're doing not judge others.
Calling yourself a minimalist, or anything else for that matter is an identity trap... Now youve created an identity you have defend, and live up to.... Nothing wrong with it, but its something to be alive to.
@@GabeBultwhat information does the app collect? I would have bought it already (and I’m not done watching the video) if it weren’t for the fact that it requires an app.
Wow, this comment section is making me lose faith in humanity. I appreciate the video, Gabe. Minimalism isn't one size fits all, and not a perfect empty house. Minimalism is a tool. Not all people use the same way to hit the same goals.
Absolutely! I have heard stories of people who started with little or no knowledge but managed to emerge victorious thanks to Ana Graciela Blackwelder.
All I say is minimalism helps with the journey to gaining wealth. And once you “achieve” that wealth. It helps keep it. Because the things ya wanted before? Aren’t that desirable anymore. I hope I can live those words and not eat them.
Did you convince your wife to start living the minimalist lifestyle or did she convince you? Any tips for winning someone over who just doesn't believe that a messy environment contributes to their elevated stress levels? (asking for a friend, of course). Also, what do you do about your extended family showering you and your immediate family with random tchotchkes and crap around birthdays and holidays? I literally had to intercept and return a shirt they were planning on giving me for Father's Day this year because I already have more than enough t-shirts. This went over about as well as you might expect
Thank you for this video. Awesome truth behind the scenes. I was taught, we teach what we need to learn. Keep teaching us I appreciate what you are doing! I bought my first ‘Cuts’ shirt from Goodwill !! Can you do a book review of ‘Simplicity Parenting’ by Kim John Payne. I would love to hear your opinion
to me the point is just that yes some sort of mess will accumulate during the day, but when you live simple it only takes 10 mins to clean the entire place, thats how ive managed to get it to now, even with all the kids toys, the open space makes it a breeze. minimalism shouldnt necesarrily be about how it looks, but how it functions and eases your life when theres less to worry about. maybe thats minimalism on a mental/philosophy level?
I'm struggling with the new found freedom of a storage unit 😂 i had to get one for my flotilla of mobility devices. Depending on how im doing i could need one or the other and i live in a campervan. 78 sq ft. Buuuuuttt...now that i have all that extra space......so i made 1 trip to goodwill already 😂😂😂
6:50 This bit-- that nothing, once done, can be only temporarily 'perfect' -- has been one of the most difficult lessons to accept about living. Is this because of conditioning or is it more elemental to being human? Because I'm a city-dweller, is it worse? 🤷♀️ probably The journey continues...
