Thank you for this. Most ear training exercises (at least in US institutions) is heavily flawed because it ignores training the intuitive sense of gravity within an instant tonal environment. Instead it emphasizes isolated interval practice. Moving from isolated intervals to intermediate or advanced dictation is a very difficult bridge to gap for the average musician.

Very interesting! I just disagree at 10:15 when you talk about G major. When I heard that little melody with C-D-E-F#-G I hear in my head C lydean. I know it is relative to G major, but I mean that I hear C as th tonal center, not G. So I think it depends on the type of music. If you check out Hermeto Pascoal, for example, 99% of the times his songs relies on this lydean feel (#11 over a major chord).

Hi, thank you for your comment. If you perceived C lydian, you are perceiving the exact same gravitational field of G major. You are just watching it (or experiencing it) form a different perspective. Indeed, C would still have the sensation of the 4th degree of a major key (the lydian sensation, as you call it), not the Ionian sensation of the the first degree, which belongs to G (at that point in the example). This is to say that you don't disagree on the feelings, you just disagree on the nomenclature. My pylosophy is that music isn't about nomenclature it's about feelings, none cares how we call it. People just feel the same things whether we call it C Lydian or G Major. Personally keeping things simple when it's possible works best for students.

People might disagree on the tonal center if there isn't enough musical information to establish a univocal tonal center. i.e. I play only C, F and G - the tonal center is ambiguous because you can perceive either C or F as the tonal center. The moment I play B, the tonal center is clearly C. Because the tritone between F and B clearly establishes a univocal tonal center. That said, situations like this very very rarely happen in music where the arrangement combined with the main melody line immediately lays out enough musical information to outline a univocal tonal center in the first seconds of the song. That said, I wanna clarify that perceiving 2 different tonal centers relative to each other, like C major and A minor, does not mean disagreeing on the tonality. The tonality is actually the same because C major and A minor are just relative keys (same for D dorian, F lydian, etc.). So if I say I'm perceiving C major and you say you are perceiving G mixolidian, we are actually perceiving the same key (the same set of notes are making up the gravitational field). So it's not a disagreement. Most 'disagreement' cases other than the 2 outlined above are just due to not being skilled enough to recognize the tonic properly. Lastly, people do perceive music in mostly the same way. It's not that subjective as you think it is.

If there definetly is a sensation related to the tonic of a tonality (which I think I can feel and recognize), and that sensation is different for G major and for C lydian (in which I feel respectively those notes as the tonal center), this makes no sense. Of course it also has to do with what notes you play and what harmony you imply because, having the same notes, it's easy to end up sounding like other mode, and usually Ionian wins that battle. But there are definetly times when I heard and felt, for example, a lydian tonal center, as opposed to a IV feeling relative to another tonic. Is there any research about perception of modes and this issue that you could share?

@@matiasusabiaga9198 There is no research I'm aware of that highlights anything on that. But in my experience with a lot of students and in the experience of our teachers with a lot of students (We are talking about hundreds of students at this point) the tonic of each mode has a comparable to the feeling of the respective scale degree in its relative major key. The 1st degree of the relative major key has always the strongest pull and feeling of resolution. If you perceive the lydian tonic feels that way its very likely that you momentarily shifted the tonality in your mind. These are complex abstract topics, and it's quite difficult to explain them here. I hope you can get the point of my reply.

OMG this is intuitive for me as I instinctively refused to move on until I have all the major key totally down. Then the sharps and move onto chords. But as a self taught pianist was too hard to put into words, I just feel what is right. This makes absolute sense. However, am I missing something as can’t find the website to do the free course. However, I’ve just the seen the price of the course and I guess it’s another one for the wealthy. Why so expensive?! It’s not very inclusive!😢 I will be doing the freebie of course.😊

Hi @11kwright, just to clarify. The course includes 8 hours of video lessons, tons of audio and pdf files to practice with and it's the best and most through representation of our method. It required years of research, testing and development to create our method and one entire year to produce this course and put it together. This is by far the best ear training method available, especially when it comes to developing perception and understanding of musical pitch. It's not comparable to anything else in terms of effectiveness, clarity and depth of explanations, specific instructions on exactly how to think when performing each ear training task, etc. Most people learn to recognize chords and melodies by ear alone in just a few months of following the course. It only costs the equivalent of 2 or 3 months of music lessons with a private teacher who, best case scenario "doesn't know anything about ear training", worst case scenario "will make you frustrated and waste a lot of your time and energy in practicing the wrong exercises". For what our course offers, holding off on lessons with your private music teacher for two or three months and investing that money in a serious ear training course seems like a no-brainer to me, as what you learn here will fundamentally change how you interact with and connect to music for the rest of your life. However, if you are not prepared to allocate any funds towards a private music teacher, then this course might not be for you. It is specifically designed for individuals who are deeply committed to their musical skills. I'm sorry if this reply seemed a bit aggressive, I just wanted to clarify.

Why the 12 scales? It's mostly about knowing the major scale, which also encompasses the minor scale. That said knowing the major scale very well is one of the first steps of our method, so yes, it's absolutely foundational; You can't have great ear training skills without it.

I think the phrasing that it's not about intervals but feeling is misleading, because that feeling does partly derive from intervals. When you compare a note's feeling in relation to a tonal center, that itself uses an interval. So the truth is that it's a combination of intervals and the tonal center that you're basing them on that creates a given feeling. I think you should try to be more clear about this instead of using "intervals" to mean intervals without any tonal context; instead, be up front and say that practicing intervals without a tonal context is ineffective and that you need to base intervals on keys.

The feeling doesn't derive from intervals. It derives from your perceived tonal context. It's the concept underlying the entire video. I believe it's explained clearly enough here and I suggest you re-watch the video cause this point is very important. That said, I have other videos on this channel where I show the scientific evidence behind this claim. Aside all of the above, I think there is an important point to clarify: Not only intervals are ineffective but they are also unnecessary to recognize most melodies, and chords. I know that, cause I do that all the time and I don't think about intervals ever. I think about single notes and chords and their sensation in the given musical piece. I have thousands of students that learn how to do so quite quickly and effectively. There are videos on our website showing their skills. So it's not misleading at all to say that 'intervals are ineffective'. You don't need them to develop a pretty good musical ear. They are also ineffective because 99% of interval-based exercises are setup without any tonal context. So since 'practicing intervals with a tonal context' is the exception, a very rare exception actually. I think it's not misleading at all to say that 'intervals are ineffective'. That said, thinking of intervals within a tonal context, still is ineffective. By far not the best way to recognize music by ear. I actually ask my students to avoid thinking of intervals, and to your surprise they learn quite well. So I'm afraid only one of us is wrong here.

The feeling does not derive from the interval itself, but from the position of the two notes within the scale or key. If you are in C major, moving from E to F and moving from B to C feel very different, but the interval is the same (a minor second). Of course, the scale itself is defined by an initial note (eg C) and a pattern of intervals (eg TTSTTTS). Still, you don't ask how does C feels or how does a minor second feels. You ask "how does the tonic feel?" and "how does moving from the leading note to the tonic feel?" All the best

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. However, I believe your perspective might not fully represent what's happening in all the conservatories all over the world. While it's true that solfège is taught in some conservatories, suggesting it's the predominant approach worldwide, might not be entirely accurate. I can attest that it's not. Especially in Europe and other countries than USA. In the United States, there might indeed be a slightly higher number of institutions favoring solfège, but even there, a significant number of conservatories continue to emphasize interval-based ear training. It's also important to note that many institutions that do teach solfège often combine it with interval-based methods, which, renders it ineffective. A method should have a series of clear instructions, should be step-by-step and show you a clear path from beginner to advanced. What exactly is 'infomercial' about this video? The fact that I'm offering you a FREE training at the end of it? Is offering a FREE training seen as a bad thing today? I'm honestly surprised. This video required weeks of work and thousands of dollars to be created, the FREE training I'm offering required months of work and thousands of dollars to be created. You're getting all of this FOR FREE, and you are complaining about it? There is essential information in this video, that alone can help you avoid wasting decades of your life on practicing the wrong things, like it happened to me and hundreds (if not thousands) of my students. The fact that I have a course doesn't mean this video doesn't include valuable information and it doesn't imply that I'm trying to deceive people into buying the course. I'm telling the truth and I support my claims with serious scientific findings something that no other ear training related channel does (even the big youtubers who are suggesting interval based ear training). If you understand the content of this video you can literally save decades practicing ineffectively without buying any course. The course is something that can help you even more, and I don't see anything negative about it.
