Bobandjeri Shaffer You are a hero! Truly appreciate your kindness and time for those dogs👍 We’ve always had rescue animals or strays and they are the BEST animals ( and usually a little bit of a project but the rewards are totally worth it ❤️💫)

Exactly. I volunteer at our local humane society to walk dogs. Most of them have had no structure or leadership. I want to help make these dogs better canine citizens but it sure is tough in this environment. Any suggestions for someone in my shoes ( limit of 15 min per dog, loud shelter , limited resources...)?

Bad part is people usually think that this is just irritating a dog and being mean to him. Showing the food and taking it away etc. People started treating dogs like humans lately which is just not a good thing.

i came across this video seeking advice on how to better my relationship with my german shepherd and i am now realizing he is such a good boy. I make him sit on his cot while i fill his bowl with food and even leave his sight in order to get the water but he will not leave his cot until i say go or let’s go and he stares at me and waits for permission. He just recently learned how to stay seated even when the cot isn’t present. He’s a little over a year. This video actually made me realize that i’m being too harsh on myself. I want him to be a great dog but i also need to enjoy him while he’s still a crazy pup!

Our human expectations, our doubts, our bad feelings, our emotions make them do bad like they do if there is no correct structure for the relationship. I always say to my clients "drop any expectations", "be patient", and "don't be too harsh on yourself and therefore for your dog" 😉 and most important "don't try to over control the dog, show him a different way to behave" Tom, as always on point... 😉

Good puppy! You are definitely laying a good foundation, but I would start him in basic obedience asap, because 1) he is very willing to please, and 2) there's no telling how far you can go with a gsd like yours. Wish mine weren't so hard headed. 😁

My notes: 1. (Going inside) put dog in sit. Carefully swing open door and praise if she stays. Do it about 3 times and reward/praise if they stay. 2. Use release command like "break." To let them know they can go inside or come out of the sit 3. When finished training with dog, then use release command (Steps: swing open door, if she stays, praise, then say break to get her out of sit

I think Lakota is a Dutch Shepherd. Thanks for all your tips. I’ve started leash work (heel, auto sit, and “on me”) with my mostly obedient Yorkiepoo and he’s loving it. The BREAK! tip is especially useful. I can see how it releases his tension and keeps him focused longer. He’s a smart dog and learns fast and now I feel like I know HOW to train him. Everytime when my dog goes out of the crate my dog has to sit and then I will say Okay to release him out of the crate. When he wants to go to the back yard he has to sit and wait until the sliding door opens I step out first then tell him to wait then tell him the release command okay

Thanks so much for this! We adopted two puppies nine years ago, and it's been a while since we had to think about these fundamentals in a structured way. We lost one of our dogs to cancer last year. It was incredibly difficult and unspeakable beautiful to have all the love we shared and trust we built together in her final moments. We recently decided to adopt a new dog and this has been such a helpful reminder and refresher.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I have two toddlers at home and zero dogs, and your videos give me some ideas of how to raise my toddlers better. Calm down folks, there's almost nothing he ever says that directly applies to raising children but it gives me some germs of ideas. For example, now I see that I really should have them say their morning prayers, get dressed, and brush teeth right away to set the tone of the day before letting them go play in the morning rather than just meander into it. (I know that sounds so obvious but I didn't really understand how those first few minutes can set the tone for listening to Mommy and following structure the rest of the day.)
@Julie_Serenity

Genius actually! 😂👍 Children have short memory span, very similar to puppies! Also, we all tend to disrespect and challenge our parents, but in a dog pack, the pups learn to respect and obey the alpha above all things!
@amg2598
@amg2598 4 года назад
@@Julie_Serenity I wasn't even thinking about those things, interesting! I think it's useful to see how much we really need to make sure the kids understand what is expected and I also love seeing how quickly a dog becomes happier with good leadership and discipline. Kids don't show results as fast as that most of the time. If a dog can be affected so quickly, how much happier and well behaved could a child be?

Dear Thomas, I am in School for my Dog Trainer exam in Germany. I really love your connection to dogs! It’s really inspiring especially since I study Canine, it’s history and behavior! I can feel your „Aura“ and „charisma“ you send to the dog passiv.. I hope you know what I mean with this, doesn’t know the proper explanation for the word in English. Also it’s great for me to see the different body languages of the dogs! Honestly it’s pretty tough to find a trainer, who is dealing with this kind of dogs in my surrounding. Thank you for letting me learn from you good sir! Wish you success in what ever level.

I have three cataracts, but I can tell your Lakota is dark/or black (or melanistic, or reverse brindle, if there is any such a thing in the breed)* dog from Mechelen/ French MALINES, in the Region Antwerpen between Brussels and Antwerp, a big industrial axis**. * I know there's black in the Breed Standard, I haven't delved off into this specific genetics of color for the breed... ** The Belgian Malinois is from Northwest Belgium in a place that was once established as a concentration area to "sort the Jews" during Nazi occupation.

Hi Tom! I love your channel so much, thank you for the amazing content! I have a question that might be related to engagement. I have four rescues, two of which are recently straight from the street in Ecuador. With these two in particular, I have found that they are easily aroused 'alarm barkers'. We live in a garden apartment, and they sound the alarm day and night when anyone is coming or going, sounds from the street, other dogs barking, etc. When this starts, I am trying the positive interrupt: using our relationship to call them to me where I have a random food reward (sometimes just praise) paired with their cue 'yes'. This definitely helps decrease the duration and frequency of the behavior. However, my problem is that this alarm barking behavior happens at night sometimes when I am sleeping (even if one or both are sleeping in their crates, or with me in the bedroom), and cannot implement the positive interrupt with 100% fidelity. I am fine with a few barks to alert, but this is beyond that. I feel as though I work hard to have structure, clear expectations, and leadership with my pack, but this problem has been a hard one for me. I wonder if you could do a video on the difference between alert and alarm barking and how to modify the behavior in a consistent way? Thank you! - Kate

I have a different word for break and follow. My word for break "OK". My word for follow is 3 click sounds. Don't know why I've picked that, but it has stuck. I'm assuming the trainer is using break because he's training and just trying to "reset" the exercise, so he can do it again. I would agree with you that giving break command through a door is a bad idea, because they come out the door with very high energy instead of calmly walking through the door. Then it's hard to get them back into focus on the walk.
