My eldest brother inherited my father's carpenter's chest and most of his hand tools. I have never been a jealous person, but I admit that I was envious of my pops gift to him. Every tool was over 50 years old. All of them old school hand tools, planes, hand saws, punches, chisels, etc. After I confessed my shameful attitude to him one day, and apologized for it, he did something incredibly generous. He waited until my next birthday and wrapped up half of the tools and gave them to me as a gift. I was truly touched by his kindness and generosity. He told me that he knew our dad would have wanted him to share with his little brother. Men don't cry often, but Both of us shed some tears that day. And some wonderful memories of our hard working, kind hearted dad.

Tenspeed TheBikeHanger - Tomorrow will be the second anniversary of his passing, and I was thinking about him while watching this video. My father and my brother are both gone, but the lessons they taught me won't be forgotten. If you have family, call them and let them know how much they mean to you. In the end, all we really have is our families.

Tracy Goodlett: He explained that just this month. Did you like CSI (in Las Vegas)? They did that with their episode titles. But either way, something in Cody's episodes will relate to the title, even if it's not direct.
@lilal87

It is click bait, but do you really care about the titles if you are a subscriber that truly enjoys a certain channel. I enjoy watching Cody and his family from time to time but it isn't the title that I click on it is the thumbnail of the video. Click bait titles= views from non subscribers. Great content= subscribers. Keep it up Cody wish I was as great as you!

I think the commenter had the same thought I did. It was just kind of funny after watching tons of woodworking channels talking about building stuff with wood and then coming across one where the guy starts off with "If I'm building an AR-15, or something, and I need a little vice, ya know, to do my work". Yeah, totally relatable, exactly what I was needing one for, building assault rifles. It does make ya think about all the possibilities there are, even if it's not manufacturing assault rifles, I could use it for making birdhouses too. 😀

typically that sort of vice should also have the fixed jaw inset into the bench face the thickness of the fixed jaw plus the sacrificial jaw. Doing this will allow long boards to be clamped flush with the edge of the bench. Also, the wood used for the vice jaws is better to be a soft wood - pine for example. you want the jaws to dent not the work. alternatively, add some leather in the jaws. Anyway, my two cents - keep up the great work

Small suggestion, recess the back jaw of the vice into the edge of the bench you can then do away with the back packing and get an extra 1/2" of vice opening and when holding longer work the bench edge will give more stability. Consider do you want hard wood jaws? Do you want the jaws to be harder than what you put in them? or softer so your work is protected from marking. they are a sacrificial item and easily replaced.
@crpth1
@crpth1 7 лет назад
Nice tip about recessing the jaw. I usually make J shaped jaw covers and never screw them, so replacing them it's as easy as lift them up. After awhile they are all banged up anyway. ;-)

How do homesteaders make enough money to sustain themselves and their family? Not all of us have corporate sponsors and are flush with RU-vid money. I'd love to get off the grid and into nature but I don't know how to get started. I love your channel but it seems like a facade to me.
@wranglerstar
@wranglerstar 7 лет назад
When we moved into this place we had nothing. We had to borrow money from family. If you continue to make excuses how life is not fair you'll never get out of your current situation. If you would like to learn how we did it get our book from the library. Do you think a successful channel just happens? Do you think corporate sponsors randomly choose people to throw money at? These things come from years of hard work. My advice to is stop whining, role up your sleeves and get serious. Nobody is going to give you anything, you need to earn it, now get to work,

Cody's done a number of great videos on how to get started, which is mostly budgeting, getting a good understanding of money in and money out and prioritising paying off debt and living cheaper. When they first launched this adventure they didn't have a RU-vid channel bankrolling them, Cody was still running the Jeep parts store online I believe, and Mrs. W appears to be a very conscientious budgeter. It is a lot easier to find reasons not to try and do what we want, but we need to ask ourselves, which will yield a better and happier life? Surely it is better to strive towards what we want even if we risk failure, rather than give up before we've even tried.

@rutacumber9604
@rutacumber9604 7 лет назад
Yes, I know that Cody does this stuff for the views, and to please some nebulous and poorly understood algarythm. I also know for watching many of Cody's videos that his actual "#1 tool every man should have" is almost certainly a worm drive circular saw. The problem with the title of this video isn't that it's just annoyingly dramatic, the big problem is that it's demonstrably false and Cody is deceiving and downright lying to the viewers. Cody himself doesn't believe this title, he's baiting us with titles that he knows to be false. Yesterday's video addressed the title issue, but all it really came down to is that Cody is selling his honesty for views/money. It's sad, I'll continue to watch the videos as the content is usually pretty good, but goodness, the deceit of those titles is just hard to get past sometimes.

Thank you Doug for pointing that out, it is around the 10:30 mark. I was focused on the planing and never noticed the bouncing and deflection the bench had at the first viewing. By no means am I discrediting the bench or its capabilities but I wouldn't have expected it to have the much distortion. I may reconsider and use full supports that go from bench to the ground.

You can still keep the bench but I would relieve the angle on the current braces by bringing them to the floor. I would also move them closer to the outer edge especially if you plan on mounting a vise.

I think the vice is so good because it was designed by Record Ltd in Sheffield UK sometime in the early 20th century. The vices were marked as "unbreakable" in the 1909 patent documents. Sheffield is famous for the invention of stainless steel and was the world leader in tool steel throughout the early/mid 20th century. The Record brand was bought first by Marples (another Sheffield firm) and then by Irwin (from the USA) in the 1960's, but the casting moulds stayed exactly the same till well into the 1970's. I have family members who worked in the factory till 1987 when it closed.

You should really look at a dust collection system. Not only have they linked sawdust too bad allergies, cancer and asthma, it is so nice to have a clean shop all the time without constantly fighting dust in the air. With such a small space it wouldn't be tough to implement it and it is such a pleasure to work in a space that cleans itself.
@tjwatts100
@tjwatts100 7 лет назад
That is expecially true of some of the exotic hardwoods like iroko which is very bad for you in dust format, as is MDF dust. I've never bothered too much about softwood with infrequent working - but if I were doing this level of work frequently, dust reduction would be a good idea. Does america still use tanalised timber (treated with copper and arsenic)? Dust from that would be bad.
@wutangclams3203
@wutangclams3203 7 лет назад
Dust from yew wood is especially toxic. I've read that once you inhale any sawdust, it stays in the tiny air sacs of the lungs forever and mucus cannot carry it out. Over a lifetime of buildup and clogging, inflammation occurs, leading to copd and cancer, among other things.

For safety reasons when ripping on the table saw do NOT stop pushing the wood between the blade and the fence until it has completely cleared the blade. I have a scar on my forehead to explain why!! The piece of wood between the fence and the blade can get picked up by the spinning blade and get thrown right at you. I was hit by a 16" wide, 2 1/2" thick piece of red oak this way 30 years ago and trust me, that will never happen again. ;-)

Everything about your well bench is useful and practical. That seems to be the theme. Since every other woodworker on RU-vid has an ornamental display of planes and antique tools that will probably gather more rust and dust, I would rather see your tool wall hold tools that you will probably reach for every time you work on a project - or at least find a way to display just the ones you use most and store the rest in a secondary location.

Wranglerstar - I like your videos and that workshop looks awesome. I agree with the vise and all. BUT please do yourself a favor, sacrifice some beauty for function. That workbench in spite of looking marvelous is a waste of time and money. At minimum put some legs in it, even removable legs work better than nothing. In my "wanna be" garage/workshop the workbench counter top is made of "bathroom" grade floor plate. Water/oil resistant, tougher than those boards (less dents). Being thinner also allow for easy fit of clamp on tools, something that an unnecessary thick top doesn't allow. Tongue removed, but I left the grove on the outside, so it can be used to hold some awkward shape/pipe. A couple of 2x4 beams take care of horizontal rigidity. The last leg is just a 2x4 cut to height not even screwed on. So it can be easily removed and put aside for some odd piece to fit under. BTW the wall side is also French cleat. I do a lot of mechanical work, that thing already took paint, thinner, acetone, oils, etc. sledge hammer beating, welding and so on. Still works perfectly, just looks crappy. I can assure you it doesn't budge whatever you do to it (hit). LOL Be well and keep up the good work. Thumbs up. ;-)

Record vises were great before the Record Company, was bought by Irwin, and production was moved to china In Denmark we used to make good drillbits, but when this Company was bought by Irwin, production was immidiately moved to china. And if im not mistaken, same happened to the original vise grip manufactorer. I am definately avoiding any Irwin tools!

If you've already brought your machines such as a drill and circular saw for example, because you want to do wood working, you need to get a vice !!! No questions asked !! I just got my vice today. It's much harder to try and build something without a vice !!!

Planes! And out of sheer curiosity - I'm no big woodworker, I use a plane on the odd occasion only. (Infrequently enough that I have to remember where I left it!). I've noticed you plane at almost a 35 degree angle? Is that a "technique" which makes for easier planing?

I picked up a vise from Harbor Freight for $15-20 that they call a "drillpress" vise, by "Forge" and it's been great

Well the consensus seems to be looking for the "plane" truth. I won't com-plane if you ex-plane how to build a plane case. LOL Philia

I have three sets of IRWIN paddle bits for wood. The oldest is the early 70s all still complete and for the most part still sharp. I also have an IRWIN screwdriver about 16" long and has a wood handle attached to the bit of the driver. I have it all shined up and hanging on my sho wall. I am in process of getting the wood workers vise now. Using the info you gave me.

I don’t care if you felt $150 was a high end vice, some people spend way more than that! I understand you want to layout cabinets or you want to make an AR or not this type of vice might just be the vice you would prefer, remember Irwin makes the old auger bits so why not trust them?

Ok, quick question. A couple actually.. What's a leather straup? Strop? And why do the wood panels have those two big holes in them?

VISEGRIP, is a brand name for locking pliers, common knowledge, yes ? ,but no matter who makes them , everyone calls them vise grips rite,? , well , irwin owns that name, so i guess it stands to reason they would make a good vise, and it's cobalt blue, awesome, i want one

Go out and buy a cabinet for (and I have) $100.00 and save the wood for important things and also use that time to help others instead of leaving it to the government. Waste of time building something to show off things. Look, I'm not being a downer but i see people spending money on tools and big vacations and they then say I want free healthcare and they we have pay for their loneliness. Thanks and God Bless P.S. I used to do modeling and woodworking too and realized (and really think about it) that if I build a model a month for three years I will have at least 36 model's around the house and the same for working with wood. How many things are you going to build (and waste time when you can be with and help others) that are going to be laying around the house. And if you work for 20 years, well.
@northnessconstructionl.l.c7183
both Cody.. both. your going to need both. I did just buy my first compact also. I purchased the Makita though. I do believe a router table jig would be interesting. something small but sturdy I could haul to job and clamp to sawhorse and mount up my little router for doing lots of sills and trim pieces. I also seem to use it daily along with my new Stanley block plane. Not sure how I got along without them. Oh that's right I barrowed them and we all know that barrowing tools is for the weak. ;) keep posting daily bud its awesome.

well in face this wise in make in china, they just added a brand on it. I would like to put a picture to show you but I can't. I just checked for you and the original price is 98 rmb for a 10inch wise which means 14,7 dollars. Irwin can get for 7 dollars buying containers of it :-) ask me for any stuff and it will be a pleasure to give you the real price of things :-)

Of all things in the world you could be working on (0:56min) an AR15 is the first thing that comes to mind, come on my friend you can do better than that. :-) All respect and love for you and your family. Rasmus, denmark

I prefer poplar or softer woods to mount to a vice so I don't possibly leave marks in my work pieces. But to each his own.

Noticed substantial flexing of your bench while you were planing. Will that not bother you while working? Result of the cantilever mounting - maybe you need some vertical legs to the floor?

That new workbench would look smashing with a few coats of decent Danish oil ... not Linseed, it's too dark. I vote you go with whichever you want to do last... The least enjoyable ... the display of your finest should be the icing on the cake.
