I know I was thinking the same thing, they just sound like they could fit in anywhere. Guess that’s why ppl say they set the standard for what cymbals should sound like the traditional A line that is.
Amen... I've got Paiste's Signatures I used for my primo, studio "only" applications. But, for everything else, those A's work, and sound amazing. And, I can buy 3 A's for every one Paiste. Beautiful sound, and great value. And, these days, they are a LOT more consistent (which used to be a huge problem with Zildjian at one point).
Honestly the weakest sounding to me. There's just no life to them. But that's something I've found to be true of pretty much every zildjian I've ever tried. Those K Customs sounded decent though.

The Zildjians (both sets) and the Paiste Dark Crisp sound best, but ...those Wuhan's sounded nice as well! I too used to play K/Z 13's back in the day, ...very nice!
I love those Meinl Serpent hats. They have a shaker-like quality to them. Also love the g-maple snare, I have one and it's one of my favorite snares ever!
They all sounding pretty good. But my favourites are the Zildjian k custom hybrid (number 2) and the Paiste dark crisp (number one). Many greetings from Germany !!!
Continue to be impressed by Wuhan's recent products. Those sounded really nice. The Paiste Signature Darks were interesting too - very musical when played open. Generally I do not love 13s very much (I do have a set of Sabian Artisans that I found for a great price, and they are nice), but this was a great video. Thanks, as always, DCOP!!
I play Sabians but have a few Wuhan effects cymbals (splashes and chinas) and pray that they don't crack because they sound amazing and form an integral part of my drum sound.
I love the sound of their crashes. They have a nice trashiness to them and they explode when you hit them. Big fan. The fact they’re very affordable is a big bonus
Not even a drummer here but I have to say - best intro ever! Also I can see why the New Beats are so popular - they're a key part of so many great rock songs, and what a lot of us (non-drummers) think of as a reference "hi-hat sound".
u guys have the best vids. i can’t get into any of these tho, the snare seriously overpowers the hats, and makes me not want 13”’s. if i had to rank: 1) zildjian new beat, 2) wuhan western, 3) paiste signature dark 4) sabian paragon
Awesome intro! Keep drumming! 😂 My first pair of 13 Hi-Hats were Zildjian K 13's. I saw Gregg Bissonette playing them and loved them. Enjoyed them for years. Now mostly 14 and 15's. Groove on! 🤘🥁🤘DC
Cool compilation! I have the Meinl Serpents. They are cool, but since they are reversible by design, it would have been nice to hear the other “shiny-side” as top cymbal. That’s how I have them set up.
We considered it, but the brilliant cymbal is a touch heavier, which we preferred on the bottom. Plus the Fast hats also had a brilliant top, so we wanted to show a difference in sound. But they sound great the other way, too!
Pastie dark crisp really stood out to me. Although i like 15" hats. But it's good to have BOTH. Best of both worlds.. especially if your a cover drummer. Or versatile player.
They all sound pretty good, and different! The Zildjian "New Beats" is like your old reliable hi hat that doesn't disappoint. I liked them all, but my top-3 are... 1. Paiste Signature Dark Crisp 2. Zildjian K Custom Hybrids 3. Sabian Paragon
Being a jazz drummer I wish you would have also played the swing pattern on the hi hats. That would have been helpful for making a choice. For the time being, I would say that the Sabians are probably the best suited for jazz.
The Sabian Paragon hats were very boring, to me. The Wuhan's knocked me out and I loved the Zildjians. And that's unusual for me because usually I'm loving both the Paiste and Meinl's above any others. Learn something new every day! Thanks, Adam Frost! Keep it cool and quirky.
For me... The zildjians excel over nearly all of the others. Thought that the meinls sound decent too, i suppose tastes and the sound for application is another point in itself. Traditionally though, for an all rounder to make work with nearly all, the zildjians, are for me at least, the best! Some cool beats and great playing as usual. Thank you!
Good comparison but I should add that while all hi-hats are technically reversible, the Serpent hats are *designed* to be reversible with the "traditional" setup being the heaver brilliant cymbal on top. Far too late to add this to the video, but hopefully this doesn't go unnoticed by the viewers. Might be worth adding some lower-thirds.
Every time you guys do a cymbal comparison video I always like the Paiste signature the best. So I guess that means it's time to start saving my penny's cause I'm looking to add/change my array that I have now
I had over a hundred Paiste Cymbals at one point. After I trimmed the herd, my set up was mostly Signatures. I used to teach at a shop from 1997 to 2007, and in 1999 I fell asleep one Sunday afternoon, on the couch. I had a dream of the sound of the Fast Crashes. When I went to work that Tuesday I bought a 16" and 17" Signature Fast Crash, and a pair of 13" Signature Dark Crisp Hi Hats. I still have them too.
Paiste Signature are wonderful. I have them on an album or 2 and they sound shimmering, clean and musical- up against a wall of metal, Fuzz Distortion.
That intro just cracks me up, killer! Anyways after 25 years plus playing 14 inch hats I decided to change and I wanted to get a bit more Stewart Copeland's sound the heavy 602 not the new signature 12s however his hats are way out of my price range but I hit jackpot with a pair of 13 UFIP Zanki hats they are great!
Epic intro!! :) I liked the Wuhan, Istanbul traditional and Sabian Paragon the best, but I'm still not convinced about the 13" size, sorry. They sound so tiny and high when played open. Still prefer my 14" K Zildjians :)
When you said Wuhan hi hats, I raised an eyebrow, but I was really surprised how good they sounded. Also, I'm kinda surprised you didn't feature the best 13's I've ever heard (and am about to buy)... Dream Bliss 13" hats. They are amazingly sandy without being to dry/dark and have a surprisingly low sound for 13's. Thanks for this vid 👍
Love these videos, great vibes and great comparisons. A real education. Thanks guys 👍🥁. Liked all of these hi hats, but particularly the Paiste Crisp, sweet 😀👏
I'm partial to 13" hi-hats...I used to own 13" K/Z and liked them lots but then, tried the Paragon's and fell in love with those. The 2002 Sound Edge were also part of my cymbals as well as the Signature Dark Crisps. For some reason, never fell in love with the Zildjian New Beats, but hey, sound's subjective, right ? In this video, I was really impressed with the Wuhan hats, although I have played their Chinas, I question their hi-hat's durability. Thanks for the video, extremely entertaining and helpful as always...
I love these hi-hats in the démo: Meinl Byzance Fast Hi Hat Cymbals Brilliant 13 Wuhan western style Hi hat 13 Istanbul Agop Traditional Ligh Hi Hat Cymbals 13" I use a Sabian Evolution hi-hat 13 ans it’s mu favorite Hi hat. Thank for this video 🙏👍
All sounds great. But i prefer a high crispy and definition sound. I miss the HH Sabian Fusion Hat. But here, i prefer both Zildjian Hats. Espacially the K Hybrid.
I absolutely adore the South Park type intros! IMO, you ensure not only informative videos about products but you should ensure those of us drummers that need stuff, use you.
Excellent intro. I laughed out loud! 😂 I use a matched set of 1974 2002 SE 15" hats. The 13" 2002's sound excellent here for MY needs. Low to medium volume classic rock. Might try a pair in my set as secondary hats
I'm still using my K/Z Zildjians from 30 years ago. They still sound great and not a single crack or chip on them even after I once loaned them out to a punk rock gig. Okay, I still use them mostly because I'm broke ass but still..
Hearing the head to heads you can really tell how Neil Peart took the inspiration from his 13" New Beats to design the Paragon series, but they do have an extra something. A friend of mine once had the 13" A Custom Mastersounds. Wish I'd made him an offer for those.
Zildjian K Custom Hybrid hats and Paiste Signature Dark hats were my favs. Istanbul Xist Dry Dark were kind of cool. Least favorite: Sabian and the Meinl.
