I too believe in the divine beauty that is the Acrolite. Really dig the BDC Aviator and the Tama Starphonic. Out of these, however, I must say the N&C Classic Alloy is my choice. Notable drums missing from this list worth mentioning: Yamaha Recording Custom, Canopus Aluminum, anything from Trick, and, of course, the Ludwig Supraphonic. There are more aluminum drums out there besides what the video and I mentioned, so check them all out.

The Gretsch sounded the best in the room to me, like that James Brown back beat crack. Close mic'd I liked the Ludwig (bought my first acro in the 80's it was a secret back then that sounded good!) , I'm very suprised by how pleasant, fat and balanced the British Drum Co. is!!! and the NC is just lovely, not a lot of frequencies to pull out on it mix-wise. Great video! tnx

I believe the acrolite is really what started the love for aluminum snares. It was meant to be a cheap alternative, and the acrolite was actually meant for beginners. Pros began to pick them up and play them, and thus began the aluminum snare trend. As a punk drummer there really is no meatier "CRACK!" than a good aluminum snare. For this I picked up a Mapex Black Panther atomizer for my kit. Absolutely the best snare for what I play. Still have my acrolite though, I now kinda use it as an ambassador for aluminum snares.

I have the 13” x 5.5” DW cast aluminum, though mine was classified as “Exotic Metal Cast Aluminum” and it is my favorite snare drum by far!!! I added a “Russ Miller” groove wedge for a more refined cross stick. I also love my Pearl UltraCast 14”x 5”!!! Also, I have #23 of 30 Gretsch 135th Anniversary Flat Black Aluminum, 14” x 7”, but I just can’t bring myself to play it. The only time it has even left it’s box was to change the heads and YES, I still have the original black Remo heads… Of the drums played here, I fell in love with that Gretsch USA 14” x 5”!!! That thing sounded amazing!!! From there I felt it was just too close between the Mapex Atomizer, the Tama Starphonic, the Dunnett Aluminum, and the Noble and Cooley Alloy Custom…. I was surprised the Ludwig didn’t really grab me, I actually thought I heard the Pearl detuning, I know Shane mentioned concerns about that when he reviewed it, and I was almost completely turned off by the British Drum Company, though it had a lot of redemption in the room mix…

Having owned a few acrolites over my playing year's, i lean toward those, that Ludwig pioneering sound with the material in question wins, but the Gretsch is well up there too! Saying that, the pearl sensitone hit some great notes as well! Surprisingly to me, but then not having owned a bronze sensitone for a while, the tone i could get from that drum was amazing. I always tend to draw the body I need for my style of sound, then slightly muffle it with a edge ring and or gel pad, sounds like too much restrain for some ears but when an ally drum really pop's, there's no hiding it's sheer beautiful tone and tonal depth. Ludwig acrolites and 400's love this IMO, they just cannot fail in my eyes/ears. Brilliant video DCP! Some beautiful playing, beats and very worthy video for us drummer's, thank you! :)

Fantastic comparison, the head to head was particularly helpful to really hear the differences. For me it's between the Acrolite and the Sensitone, both beautiful drums, if I had to spot any differences I'd say the pearl has slightly more body. Honourable mention to the Tama though, that has such tight control over the tone, the centre hit almost sounds like the rimshot!

Great video and spot on Tony regarding the larger issue that aluminum snare drums are the most versatile. In all my years of playing I always found that snares of other material (steel, brass, wood, etc.) couldn't "cut it" for the entire night. But my Supra 402 could be played all night no matter the music venue or the room and always sound and felt perfect. I'm finding the same to be true for my N&C 14x6 Alloy Classic. I never had a Ludwig Acrolite but I need to try one (cheaper, no worry about chrome pitting and sounded as good as the 402) along with an Alloy classic in the 4.75 depth. The DW surprised me of how great it sounded along with a couple of the 14x5's as I usually prefer a deeper snare especially in aluminum.

My first snare I ever owned was a Ludwig Acrolite. Glad it still stands up to all these power houses. The Gretch was the clear winner. I’d love to hear it with triple flange hoops, bet it would sound even better. Between the 2 snares with Diecast hoops the Gretch was far superior than the Tama. I wasn’t impressed with the Tama. Tama’s hand hammered aluminum sounds better. (Not in video) I was also very surprised that the Mapex held its own too. Very unique sound. I like it. I was not impressed with the DW or Pearl. Both were just blah. Nothing really stood out. The aviator was a nice drum. Right in the middle of the pack. the Dunnett and N&C were good too, but they should be for that kind of money. The PDP was different as well. I think it would sound better and more dynamic in a higher tuning range. Probably because of the wood hoops. My order. Gretch Mapex Ludwig N&C British PDP Dunnet Tama Pearl DW Don’t kill me… it’s My opinion. Buy what you like.

Hands down, the Acrolite projected its class (and most desirable) sound the best when using room mics only. Making it, in my humble opinion, the best drum for the average gigging drummer (and you can’t beat its price point).

The Acrolite, The Pearl and Grestch were my favorite in a nice price range for me!

The Gretsch was my favorite, with that dense tone. The Pearl was very good for the price and just as enjoyable as several of the more expensive drums. The DW was my least favorite.

I did a blind listen here on head 2 head part…The best to my ears was 1, 3 and 6. In order Ludwig , Mapex and PDP. I didn’t expect that. Thinking about the trend and fame I would choose Tama Starphonic, DW, Dunnet…but my ears choose the PDP one of the best sounding drum snares on the list. And the Mapex was really good. Maybe I have cheap ears. Other thing…amazing how can Pearl deliver such a good quality job for the price. Thanks for the video, you guys are “show de bola”

N&C and Acrolite for me. The BDC Aviator was interesting though, and one I'd take a look at along with the Gretsch.

In my opinion the best out of these were the Noble and Cooley and the Ludwig Acrolite. I didn’t mind the more aggressive Tama but the Sensitone was the worst for me, yet many comments like it. That’s the great thing about choice and different tastes. Shame no Yamaha Recording custom was in the group.
