So many great books on this list. Shelly, I’m glad you made this video and I hope you will tackle even older best picture book lists. Sydney Smith’s Small in the City is my hands down favourite here. His moody ink and watercolour matches the somber tone of the story and the pacing is just perfect. It’s a picture book for humans of any age.

Lindy, that's a bit of a conundrum because my library doesn't have some of the oldest books though I could try and go about the route of an interlibrary loan. Small in the City does have a cohesion that's just lovely.

Yay! It worked and was wonderful! The nice thing about this is it helps put the Caldecott Medal into an international perspective in regards to what others are doing around the world. If you ever get the chance, each year in March or April the International Children’s Book Fair is held in Bologna, Italy. There’s a huge juried exhibition of children’s book illustration of original artwork. Art and exhibitions are huge throughout the whole fair as that’s what transcends language and everyone is there selling the international rights for publication. Some of the big children’s book awards are also announced there. Closer to home in NYC, each fall The Society of Illustrators holds an exhibition of juried art by US produced children’s book illustrators. It called The Original Art, or OA, and this year’s exhibit opens on October 26. They also have copies of all the books from which the art is drawn from. I would go there and sit for hours reading and building my collection development list for picture books.
