Toilet Bound Hanako kun has revived what I (falsely) assumed was my long-buried inner, rabid 12 yr old fangirl self. I can't get enough of especially the unique art style and color palettes. Just exquisite!

I put off reading Ooku for the longest time, mainly because I am scared of infectious diseases, that of the graphic kind😢. But once I started I couldn’t stop reading, its impossible to put it down. What I understood is that neither male nor female ruler or authority can guarantee good governance, both need to join and not butt heads, in household matters too, which we all understand now in this age of “almost” equality. My favorite part is the odd pieces of humor and the unexpected love stories found across generations. There were so few good couples but they made me gush, although no happy ending for most cases.

Glad to see a youtuber giving the love skip beat deserve, it was such a fun read. Its true that the arc conserning kyoko's mum was hard to read but personally it was my favourite arc in the serie because i really liked how well written the past of saena was. Now concerning my favourite manga this year, they are: 10. Ptsd radio 9. Confidential confession 8. Takopi's original sin 7. The climber 6. Queen's quality 5. Skip beat 4. Blame 3. Kaoru hana wa rin to saku 2. Eden: its an endless world 1. Blue period

I'm so glad you love From Far Away, it's one of my all time favorites! I really appreciate how Noriko doesn't have to be super physically strong or even have powers to be helpful and important to the story. I loved the line where she states if she can help by being who she is then she should do those things first before trying to change herself, very impactful and hopeful.

May 2023 be a year that we all read so much good manga that time becomes an illusion once again. 😌 (and that we all have a more hoots and hollars 😬). 2022 kinda sucked all around, but your channel has been one of the best things about it. Your uploads are always something to look forward to, the conversation and enthusiasm they generate always make the following weeks better and provide a lot of healthy and safe comment scrolling. I truly appreciate all the good stuff you bring to this corner of the internet. Yes yes yes to Ōoku!!!!! I started that series years ago and got to volume 4 before I uh...could no longer afford manga XD It's a great series!! Definitely agree, it was so well written! As much as I was enjoying Y the Last Man, I think I prefer Ōoku (they both kind of tackle the same concept, but from very, very different angles and eras/cultures).

I adore seeing that From Far Away made your list, so happy that my favorite manga is getting a bit of a resurgence this year 🥰 (Also thank you for bringing the 30th anniversary stuff to my attention in the Isekai video!! I was able to work out a way to get some of the merch from the anniversary shop and I am beyond thrilled, really never thought I'd have merch for this series 🥹)

Honestly seeing you bringing up Skip Beat again and seeing how much you loved it, made me rekindle my love for it, (as well unearth a forgotten W R A T H against Shou, thing I haven't felt for like a decade LMAO). I've only watched the anime when it was finishing its release, and once it was over I was left with the feeling of wanting to see more especially to see Kyouko succeed at her career, but sadly i didn't have the means then to read the manga, but maybe now may as well be good time to go back to it. Also thank you for sharing your fave read of the year. I think from all of them Ooku got me hooked up the most, alongside The Witch and the Beast. Plus From Far Away comes really nicely as lately I've been having a lot of interest for classic manga from those decades, and a curiosity for how Isekai were handled back then. All in all thank you for making continuous entertaining content where we can share the feeling of love for shoujo content and I hope you have a nice time during holidays now that they're around the corner!

Oof, I'm early?? I love that your list is filled with a lot of lesser known series. Most lists are all manga I've already heard of/read. I'll have to check them out. One story I'd like to shoutout is Midnight Rain, a webtoon by Pani with excellent characters and drama. I love it to pieces. I have been running out of good shoujos these years but this one really gives me the feels.

So glad you got to read Mars this year! I’m not caught up on Skip Beat (I started years ago) but I know there’s no pressure since it’s probably not even close to being done. My favorite finds of the year were A Sign of Affection, Apothecary Diaries, Namidaame to Serenade, and My Happy Marriage. And thanks to discovering Bookwalker this year I’ve been screeching about A Sign of Affection monthly 😂 I love it but waiting for each chapter is going to be my villain backstory.

You’re responsible for two of my favourite reads this year: Princess Jellyfish, and Skip Beat, and you just mentioned Doughnuts, whose last volume I was so impatient for that I got it in Japanese via Bookwalker, and worked my way through it. :p

I’ve been really enjoying reading Golden Kamuy as well but I also sometimes get lost in the plot and don’t remember the names of the more minor characters lol 😅 Great video though, discovered this channel this year and as someone who never really knew about many shoujo and josei series, your content has really opened my eyes to the amount of great stories that unfortunately aren’t as talked about within the vast anime/manga community (especially among guys) as they should be. My favs this year have been A Sign of Affection, Queen’s Quality (thank u Colleen) and Basara which I’m actually reading for the first time! I have so enjoyed your channel and hope you have a lovely end of the year!!🥳

These all sound interesting, I'll add them to my list! My favorite manga this year was Enshoku no mandara. It's only one volume and it's about a famous buddhist painter from the edo era. The art is stunning and sooo expressive and the story made me cry several times. I'd say it's mostly about what drives artists and how they can sometimes get in their own way either because of self doubt or by getting too absorbed/obsessed by their art.

I literally caught up to Sakamoto days last night and I am in absolute love with it. And now I’m going to take some of these manga recs because I have to wait till Sunday for the next chapter.

I'm so thankful for your content, Colleen! I'm glad that your channel could create a space for the untapped, yet thriving, shoujo/josei community. My ultimate fave I've read this year is the manhwa Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid by Na Yoonhee on Webtoons. This author's work usually fires on all cylinders, but this one in particular tugs on those heart strings with her incredibly grounded, layered characters, relationships, and plot. I couldn't put it down after I started. If everyone read this story I think the world would be a better place.

That first chapter when she's talking to herself in her head... just ripped a hole right through me because I've had that type of feeling/situation happen before. So good! I'm glad you mentioned a yuri, as I'm quite a bit androphobic irl, and it makes some media hard to handle for myself.

Finally someone talk abouyt From Far Away ❤ I read this manga years ago and like it. The author kinda famous here years ago, due most of her books are translated here. But after From Far Away finished, people starting to forgetting, some of her manga are hard to find nowdays

My favourites are:- 20th century boys- One of the best things I have ever read. This needs an anime and it should be done by the same people who did Monster Oshi no Ko- The only idol manga I will probably read ever Kaguya sama love is war- After the spectacular season 3 of the anime I decided to jump on the manga and it was one of the best decisions I made ever. Will miss it. Bokutachi ga yarimashita- The most surprising thing is that this is from the author of Blue Lock. One of the most unique mangas that may never get an anime adaptation. It got a live action though which I haven't watched. My Dearest self with Malice Aforethought- If you love thrillers you need to go into it blindly and read it. Chi no Wadachi- I am not caught up but it's really traumatising. Dandadan- One of the few manga I want physically. Summer time rendering- I read the manga before the anime and let me just say it is really good. Although the anime did a great job with the adaptation. Almost forgot to mention:- Ichinose Family sins:- Incredible mystery manga on Shounen Jump. The Game Devil:- A really well executed cliche isekai with a unique art style on Manga Plus. Go read it now.

I'll definitely be checking out some of these series. My favorite manga I read this year are Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon, Mushishi, and QQ Sweeper/Queen's Quality (that last one thanks to you). QQ Sweeper volume 3 had one of my favorite "oh...fuck" moments all year, and Queen's Quality is delivering in spades. I will read Chihayafuru when I can afford it, but I did start watching the anime adaptation the other day and I am smitten. Thank you for this channel, it's made the end of my year much better.

I have an unhealthy obsession with skipbeat, I have read it more times than I am proud to admit, but there is something so amazing about it that gets me every time, I love it too much, I only don't like the Guam arc, I admit I read it as if it were a filler, although your take makes it look better, so I will give it another chance lol

I love the miscommunication trope, just an easy way of adding some angst (or even a lot of angst) to a plot. But it has to be done well.

Great video! If you liked Sakamoto's Days for its "clarity" of the action scenes, then I can recommend you Dandadan! Yukinobu Tatsu may be even the best artist nowadays when it comes to depicting fight scenes in a "flowing" way that doesn't lose the reader. This manga is also full of great female characters, which is what you're looking for, from what I've noticed in your videos. Suffice it to say that Dandadan has two equal main characters - female (Momo) and male (Okarun). Anyway, good luck with the channel and thanks for helping me to get into the shoujo manga! EDIT: Oh, and don't get discouraged by the first chapter, if you decide to give it a try. The controversial scene there doesn't reflect the charm of the series and in later chapters Dandadan changes its tone compared to it, although it's still just as crazy.

YES, good taste, but really Ooku needs more recognition, yeah it is a little hard to read but Fumi Yoshinaga made a real worlbuilding work, and the characters are so well writting that its almost unbelievable. Also Skip Beat was needing a good introduction for new shoujo manga readers...

I can so relate with how the year flew by, in not so good way for me. I bought koi no hajimari all Japanese volumes after volume 7 was out, from Kinokuniya. I am pretty sure it won’t ever be translater because it’s so underrated and I don’t want to miss getting out of stock, like “mairimashita senpai” which always seem to be out of stock at Kinokuniya 😢

My favorite Manga this year have been Alice in Borderland, which was an amazing read all the way through and I loved it so much. I'm not a big action but the little mysteries were just written in such an intellegent way, as well as such interesting and fun characters I loved to follow (and hate in one case) it was just so ... ugh, but the good ugh, you know? I also read a lot of BL this year, a lot of which ended up as my favorites like Our Dining Table and Dekoboko Sugar Days, which are both so incredibly wholesome and cute and fluffy that my teeth start to rot away just thinking about them. My Brother's Husband was also incredibly wholesome and I would lie if I said I didn't tear up a bit at the end. My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness was also amazing and I really wished I had read it a bit earlier in life to see I'm not the only giant mess in this planet. There are also No.6 and magi, which are re reads, but I love them, so they count. But my absolute favorite read of this year is actually a visual novel, which I know doesn't really count because this is about Manga, but DRAMAtical Murder is just soooooooo good, that it's hard for me to shut upt about it. It has some ... questionable things about if I'm staying nice to describe them but the rest of it is just ... I ... it's just ... I love it so much. I don't think I have ever smiled and come to tears as often as I did reading it and I'm so incredibly glad I read it, even if there was one route that is more than questionable and the game (and espacially the sequel) had scenes that scarred me for life. I also checked out two more visual novels by the same developer and I love both of them, even if it is not as much as DRAMAtical Murder, but I'm still only half way through with one of them, so that opinion might change. Either way, this year was the one I wanted to get back into reading and I'm so incredibly glad that I did. Some of those stories will definitly follow me for a long time and I will cherish every moment i have spend with them.

Have you read with the light yet? It's my all time favorite josei and it's really something special. It's about a mother raising an autistic child in Japan and all the struggles that come with it between him being unable to communicate how most people can and how prejudiced many people can be. I really love how empathetic of a series it is towards every character and how it's a realistic yet idealistic portrayal of growing up with autism/raising an autistic child

My fave manga were in no particular order Horimiya, Moriarty the Patriot, Sasaki and Miyano, Bungo Stray Dogs, Vinland Saga, and Fullmetal Alchemist. I really got into Manga this year and I've been having a great time! I've also started collecting physical copies of some of them too! I hope I'll read even more of it next year.

Hello, I’ve been following you on TikTok for awhile now and thank you for bringing shoujo back to light. I stopped reading and collecting for nearly 10 years and just got back into it. First question of many: where do you read chihaya furu ? After your rec I finally watch the anime (I was bed ridden 😷) I cried like a baby from the final episode and i understood a part or your love for Taichi 😭 but now I’m obsessed and need to read the manga. Any help would be amazing. Also you lit a fire under me to start collecting as much as possible again. My collection is only growing while my pockets are feeling light 😂 thank you!!

My favorite manga that i started this year, don't know if I'll complete it, has to be Yona of the Dawn. It's been a wild ride with that series lol My favorite anime that I'm proud of myself for completing this year is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I started it like a decade ago and then never finished it, and then one of my friends challenged me to finish it and i did and i'm just so, so glad that i did. I spent this whole year completing series that i had started and that one is the one i'm most proud of.

Ooku is very subtle in terms of dense storytelling if that makes sense, and that works in its favor.

Omg i used to read Ooku on the sig ikki website and i LOVED IT and ive had the forst 5 on my wishlist for like a decade. But they are never available so i assumed it just got completely dropped here?!? at least until someone posted it as a restocked series recently

Okashiratsuki - From head to Tail: random find when i saw the discussion for the last translated chapter, super enjoyable and apparently the author does a lot of short worthwhile reads

I definitely recommend you to read Namidaame to Serenade! I don't see anybody talking about it but i have so much fun reading it (there's only around 40 chapters out yet tho) It's about one modern teenage girl who travels back in time in Japan 1907. She's lost and can only rely on her double self from that time (so like in some situations she takes her place and all, they swap identities) and her fiancee! it's just sooo good i'm in love with the chemistry between the characters and the conspiracy plots and everything just feels amazing. The heroine only knows what she read from books about that period so she's completely lost but ends up at the center of dilemmas between her double's family and her fiancee's family, she asks herself how to go back to her own world, if she can find her own place in this world... the romance btw is just chef's kiss 👌🏻👌🏻

My favourite read of this year was I Love You So Much I Hate You. Yuri one shot that was just so good. Also started Ooku and I’m looking l’y to continue it next year. Also glad to see From Far Away get more recognition, it’s such a good series with a fantastic vilain and great world building. Forgot to add the web novel Love and Leashes or The Sensual M. 18+ but so good.

I havent read too much this year. But I finally read all of yotsuba! after having been only read a few volunes. And I read Clover, which was gorgeous.

I just started reading manga this year I will list what I remember I read Aku no hana ( yeah this was the first manga I ever read) Three days of happiness Watashitachi no shiawase na jikan Happiness Tomodachi game Blue hearts ( it is coloured but I guess you can consider it a manga) Ayeshah's secret ( it is a manhua but a manga reader can enjoy it too) Aisha ( it is a remake of Ayeshah's secret I highly recommend this one ) I also read some manhwas and webtoons.
